Jonathan just finished installing an IKEA kitchen for me. New base cabinet, wall cabinets, a built in microwave, and countertop. He had to work with difficult sloping walls (brick and terrible dry wall) and it looks fantastic. He even added a backboard to the counter when we asked. Jonathan replied to all my texts and emails quickly. He was very professional and skilled.

Ackthba was professional, and thorough. He hung 5 pictures/art in our home. Three wood paintings in my sons room, a large canvas into brick in the master, and a 47X32 photograph in our living room. He was not short of professional and quick. He even fixed a kitchen cabinet that was half off the hinge (European hinge). I will definitely hire him again, and recommend him to friends!

Mike has done work on the outside of my house (such as garage door, gutter, and fence) and the inside (such as fixing kitchen cabinets and drawers, doors, and plumbing). He is responsive, reliable, and explains things so there aren't surprises. He is a great "go-to" person and gets the job done in a timely manner.

Tom's team did an outstanding job at painting very high contemporary ceiling rooms. Patched ceiling cracks and smoothed out ceiling issues from previous non-TNS work. He did creative carpentry work to fix problems with a hall corner wall, hole in bath wall and deck board that had rot. Fixed kitchen cabinet drawer that did not work. Great communication and execution. Hard workers, that were very accommodating of my schedule and my dogs. Great experience

We would highly recommend Gesnel! Before the apartment renovation, we discussed the job in detail. He is very professional, responsive (by phone and email) and is very honest when assessing work to be done. He performed the following renovations to our apartment: Painted entire apartment (crown molding, doors, walls, ceiling, etc), sanded and stained hardwood, repainted cabinets, replaced tile in kitchen with marble, replaced back splash in Kitchen, replaced light fixtures with chandeliers, etc. His work is impeccable. I am very happy with the finished product!

My kitchen is recovering from a ceiling pipe brake. Many of the cabinets were water damaged.... all "dirty" from the debris of wallboard and insulation. Bernard contacted me immediately. Came promptly and gave me a good estimate. He is extremely polite, and very professional in his knowledge. The damaged cabinets were repaired and all the cabinets were cleaned, touched up as needed and waxed. They are "glowing". Upon inspection there were a few spots he had missed due to the light in the kitchen. When I informed him... he returned and was happy to take care of everything in an efficient, pleasant manner. I have also hired him to refinish a table for me. Thank you Bernard

The job location was in Ramsey. The scope of works was : removal of the existing kitchen cabinets, install new cabinets, granite countertop with under mounted sink and faucet also install tile backsplash between the countertop and upper cabinets. We had a detailed contract and the work was done accordingly. It took two weeks to complete the job since we had to wait for the granite countertop and also the tile work was quite complicated with the enormous amount of catting because of the diagonal installation and the quite a few corners. Mr. Wlazlo was always on time and went above and beyond to satisfy all our wishes. The quality of work was excellent, look up the pictures on RR Architectural Woodwork's website.

I asked him to modify something after having it fully assembled and he was happy to accommodate me. I would hire him again, no question.

I started out with only a very general idea of what I wanted in my kitchen renovation. Henry had great ideas & went above & beyond to maximize my space while making it look super. They were very easy to work with, very neat and always cleaned up well at the end of a day's work. We also needed a painter & wallpaper hung - Henry recommended someone who was wonderful! They were very flexible & amenable to making changes as we went along. He also did some custom work for us - 2 cabinets and shelving units for a closet. Very well made and look great, exactly what we needed. We are very happy with all the work & would highly recommend Rizzo & Associates.

Sergey (Waxwing) was hired after I saw a beautiful piece of furniture at a friends house/workspace. Sergey was very open to my design suggestions, and helped me refine my initial design over the course of several phone calls and emails. His computer renderings were very detailed and spelled out everything, showing the dressers and nightstands relative to the dimensions of the room etc...no surprises. He also didn’t pressure me through this process...but when it was done he got right to work. Installation was quick and painless. He really took ownership of the work, his level of professionalism and accountability was truly refreshing. I only wish that the other contractors I had working in my home cared as much about their work (after they’ve been paid) as he does. I’m already looking at other projects for him to tackle and have referred him to several friends for their custom cabinetry and millwork. I’d like to underline how great the customer service was. Even after the work was done, he came back to check that things hadn’t changed. He was all over it and took it upon himself to tweak the cabinet a little...he’s a nice blend between artist and craftsman. Nice price point vs. quality. Fast turnaround. Great communication. Easy going guy. Honestly...I couldn’t recommend him any more than I already have. No brainer. JD

Lou completed beautiful work (kitchen cabinets), sending us pictures along the way. He paid attention to detail and answered all of our questions and concerns. He was thoughtful and anxious to please. Lou built the cabinets to our specifications suggesting/adding several improvements to our designs. I would happily use Lou again and recommend him to all.

This guy is the real deal. I previously had a contractor do a half ass job and leave me high and dry.. So I was looking for someone to come clean up the mess and also make my basement look professionally done. At first I was skeptical because he hadn't had 1 review before hiring him. Sometimes in life you take high risk and this time I got a high reward. This guy went above and beyond and everything he did he did to perfection! He did everything from drywall/compound, installing kitchen cabinets, installing tiles on my floor, he installed light fixtures a vanity, and electrical work and a super reasonable price! This guy brings value and is worth every penny! Someone who takes pride in his work...Not to mention is a super nice guy! Trust me as the first person reviewing him you cannot go wrong. I almost didnt want to post because now everyone in Brooklyn will know my secret! Lol

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
