Introduction: Hello! I am a professional cellist with a passion for teaching students of all ages and levels of experience. I recently completed studies at The Juilliard School, and perform actively throughout the country and around the world as a soloist and chamber musician. I have eight years of teaching experience in both private and group settings, and have given masterclasses and workshops in schools and colleges both in the United States and abroad - most recently at Cornell University, Stony Brook University, and the Xinghai Conservatory in China. In addition to private teaching, I have also been a substitute chamber music coach at Juilliard Pre-College, and led workshops at the Washington Heights-Inwood Music Project (WHIN). I am currently accepting private cello students for online lessons as well as limited in-person lessons in New York City - my schedule is flexible, please inquire! In addition to lessons, I provide a comprehensive weekly practice journal for all students, with detailed and tailored notes following each session. Students will also have opportunities to perform and share their music - I recently worked on a recording project with several students, which we shared in a virtual performance for seniors in New York. Students will also have a chance to see me perform; complimentary tickets are provided when available!

I began taking beginner cello lessons with Issei about eight months ago, and our lessons have quickly become one of my favorite times of the week. As a teacher, Issei is patient, thoughtful, and clear. He has an impressive intuition for how to pace lessons and student progress in general, and has a great sense for when it’s time to add a new skill or work on an older skill from a different angle. Issei goes out of his way to tailor lesson material to his students’ interests and to help them keep track of their goals, and I always feel like I have something interesting to work on each week. His own talent is also an inspiration. I highly recommend lessons with Issei!

My daughter is in her second year of study with Issei. He is an exceptional teacher - patient and encouraging while also focusing on details, precision, and expression. She isn’t a “serious” student but Issei has found a way to excite her about playing cello and keep her motivated to continue studying and enjoy making music. Issei would be a wonderful instructor for all levels of musicianship and could certainly challenge experienced musicians to develop further.

Cello Lessons

So far, It’s been amazing. Issie has a wealth of knowledge, teaching tools, and patience. My son couldn’t read music last week and he sent him a game and he’s now reading notes (slowly but he can read the notes!) Issei also has a calmness about him that is so valuable when your child is frustrated and disappointed in himself. He can definitely “read” the student and pivot to another task when needed and his attention to detail is fantastic. He always assigns homework and sends fun things to watch and listen. I can’t say enough nice things about Issie.
