The food was Fabulous. The caterer was late and didn't tell me that she doesn't provide heating trays or any utensils etc. I didn't ask about those things because all the other caterers supply them and I just assumed she would as well. Otherwise, Ellen is a very nice person and did a great job. I was happy with the food and service.

The venue for my birthday party had limited kitchen space for the caterers to work with, but Chuck and his staff were able to be creative and make some last minute adjustments to make it all go smoothly nevertheless. My guests enjoyed the hors d'oeuvres selection. Thanks EDC!

Chris assisted me with my wedding catering - on top of being such an extremely talented chef, he is so knowledgable about food & catering logistics. I have also eaten at many of the restaurants he has cooked at - amazing! So lucky to know a chef like him.

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. I used Tamara for my engagement party and she was fantastic! I had about 60 people and we started with passed h'ourderves during a cocktail hour in one room (she provided the staff and a bartender). While this happened she was setting up the buffet dinner in another room. She let me know when it was ready and then (timing was flawless) we moved into the second room for dinner. My friends and family raved about the food, which included gluten-free and vegan options as many had dietary restrictions. We had a French theme as I had gotten engaged in France and Tamara worked with me on a French menu, including a delicious chocolate-hazelnut crepe desert with fresh berries. She was totally on-point with timing, presentation, and professional execution, including proactively handling things like insurance with the building so it wasn't a hassle for me. The reason I initially chose her was because she was more reasonable than the other bids I received for caterers in New York but she offered identical services to what they had proposed and she went the extra mile the day of the event. I will definitely be using her again and I would highly recommend her to anyone. I am still receiving compliments on her food and the friendliness/professionalism of her staff.

I am a private chef, in Manhattan. Wayne helped me out with a party on the Upper East Side, for 35 people. His cooking skills were excellent, his demeanor was on par and the house staff really enjoyed having him work with us. Wayne Clarke is definitely my go-to guy when I need some more assistance in the kitchen!!!

We worked with Katherine Fonsella from DeCicco events and cuisine and she was WONDERFUL. We were planning a pre-wedding dinner for about 100 people in the Tarrytown area, but we live in Northern California. We did not know any venues or caterers or suppliers. Katherine helped us find a great, unusual loft venue, arranged all the decor, tables, lighting, and set up the catering from DeCiccos. The staff were excellent, the food was very good, everything went off perfectly. We are so appreciative of all that Katherine did to make our event wonderful!

Adolfo and his team catered my mother's 60th Surprise Birthday Party for 15ppl in her apartment. It was an absolute success!!! the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. the flavor profiles as each course came out complimented the ones before. it was a cohesive menu that we both worked on preparing. the favorites of the night were the mini grilled cheese with the tomato soup shot and the duck wraps. The mini lobster rolls were tasty and we took the leftover lobster and ate them as lettuce wraps. But everything was delish!! I spoke to many caterers and his level of professionalism and follow up was what truly drew me to his as I knew he could be trusted and cared for this event to be a success as much my sisters and i did. Everyone was so pleased and in awe of the service. As soon as an item was sent out - the napkins were whisked away. My sisters and I were able to enjoy my mother's party due to the prompt attention and efficiency of Adolfo's staff. I would love to hire Adolfo again for all my parties. It's well worth it and I'm so fortunate that I was able to find his services. Thank you for his team for making it so special. My mom was blown away- much success to you!! Thumbtack community - please hire them! You will not be disappointed.

I had an amazing experience working with Melissa!! From before the event when we emailed and face timed to plan the menu, till the dinner everything was professional and high quality! We had 10 girls and a number of different dietary restrictions that she easily accommodated. We were at staying at a rental house that she had to work with what we had there and she set up a beautiful table scape, with flowers she picked up! The meal was so delicious and accommodated everybody’s eating restrictions!! Not to mention she was just fun and easy to get along with! Much appreciation to her sous chef for also being our photographer:) Can’t wait to work with Melissa again!!!

Tyler bartended our dear friends' engagement party - and he was excellent! He quickly whipped up a fabulous signature cocktail with ingredients I had around the house, and it was a huge hit. He even stepped in to help me finish up some last appetizers, offering helpful suggestions and proactively finding his way throughout the apartment to make sure our guests were well taken care of. We will absolutely be using The High Life Productions in the future.

As someone who is obsessed with food, I know good from mediocre, and mediocre from just plain bad. I am also someone has ZERO capacity to cook for more than, like, 1-2 people at a time…tops 4….but I happen to have a big extended family and group of friends that LOVES to entertain and BE entertained. So, on one hand it’s great because it gives me LOTS of excuses to eat wonderful food to my heart’s content (yay cheat days!); on the other hand, I have panic attacks just THINKING about preparing for one of these parties in terms of planning menus, figuring out what and how much stuff to make, shopping, prepping, cooking, cleaning, etc My heart is actually starting to race right now just WRITING about it!!! However, about 7 years ago, I found my secret weapon. I was at an event my old job was hosting, and the food was AMAZING and so creative and delicious. The theme was gourmet comfort food, and I’ll never forget it because I LOVE comfort food, and the dishes they served at the event were such cool, delicious, creative versions of some of my favorites. I was in the restroom at some point fixing my make-up, and a Chef Alana happened to be at the sink as well. We just started chatting and I liked her instantly. She has such a great energy that you will notice right away when you meet her (and you SHOULD meet her!) As it happened, I was in the beginning stages of planning a holiday party with my sister, and we were tying to decide what to do about food. When I mentioned this to Chef Alana, she immediately threw like 3 great potential ideas at me!!! We exchanged info and I contacted her the next day. We talked about the details of the party, the types of guests they would be there, particular tastes, requirements, special dietary needs of some of the guests, etc. and she said she'd whip up a proposal and get back to me. Two days later she sent me an EPIC menu, layout of how she and her staff would work, breakdown of her price and some great tips as well! I hired her the second I was finished reading....and the rest is history. Chef Alana and her staff have done every single event I have ever needed catered, since then, as well as many for people I have referred her to. On a totally opposite note from being an obsessed foodie and big entertainer/entertainee, I happen to also be a former figure competitor (a category in the bodybuilding world). Now, while I don’t seek out the healthiest dishes when planning a party or family gathering, Chef Alana’s food almost always can be considered “healthy” in that she only uses the freshest ingredients and every single element of every dish is homemade. She skimps on NOTHING in terms of quality, freshness and authenticity. But I digress. The real point I was about to make is that for the two years I was competing, I hired Chef Alana to do all of my meal prepping and delivery. We thoroughly discussed my needs and preferences — which were VERY picky and obnoxious — and she NAILED it every single week. The amount of time and frustration she saved me during that already-stressful time was PRICELESS. I refer all of my friends and family to Chef Alana and her Most Wanted Chef staff any chance I get. She is that good. I actually hate making recommendations to people on services and products, etc. in case things don’t go well and then I’d feel responsible. In all honesty, though, I NEVER hesitate to recommend Chef Alana/Most Wanted Chef, and I will continue to tout her services and UTILIZE her services every chance I get. Do yourself a favor if you have ANY need for a caterer or a private chef - reach out to Chef Alana, be prepared to be blown away, and see why she really is the Most Wanted Chef.

This is the first time that I've personally worked with a caterer for a small event (15 people) and it couldn't have gone better. Chef Stenneth was very detailed when presenting me with catering options. He worked within my budget and was open to any suggestions and alterations I had. He was communicative and responsive to all my inquiries and delivered everything punctually. A true professional! The food itself was AMAZING! The guests at my event all specifically pointed out how much they enjoyed the food! Chef Stenneth's culinary skills easily rival top restaurants in the city and I feel like I've found a hidden gem with him. I would easily recommend him to anyone looking for a caterer for any party size!

Prior to working with Melissa, she was very responsive. She was comfortable responding over text, email and phone. She gave me ample time on the phone so that I could get to know her before coming to our house. Additionally, Melissa was patient as I tried to figure out the menu for the actual event. On the night of the event, Melissa came over to the house. We were staying at a rented home that had limited supplies. Melissa was not at all thrown off by this, and she had brought all of the materials she would need to cook with. While Melissa was happy to cook in the kitchen alone with her assistant, she was extremely social with the other members of the party (there were seven of us); and was happy to share what she was cooking, how she was doing it, and answering any questions people had. A mixed gender bachelorette party, Melissa was really able to understand the energy of the space, and was even willing to take pictures of our group before she left! The food she made was absolutely delicious and she was able to find a good balance between feeding everyone without having too much food left over. I would definitely hire again for another event!

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

Carol Foster catered my wedding in New York in August 2, 2014.. OMG I do not know where to start, Ms.Carol and her team went above and beyond to make sure this event was successful. She catered 500 people but on that day there were more than 500 people. Mind you that I am African so we throw large party even when you do not plan for it to be that large so my max was 500 not knowing what will happen that day...However, Ms. Carol did not panic and worked successful with my coordinator. From the beginning she worked with our budget and was able to help us with some of her recommendation of the dishes. She and her team were there on time. From the reviews of family members, friends and the guests of the event stated that her food was really good and tasty. They were very professional. Ms. Carol is the best and I will use her again in a heart beat. She made my wedding dreams come through. Oh she also has a great personality and a warm nature person and will work with you no matter your budget. What attracted my coordinator and I was her personality and after the food tasting which was done by my fiancé at that time and two of my siblings since I was located in Texas. So I was praying to hear good news from the tasters and they told me her food was really good among the other caterers and her house was very organized and neat. Ms. Carol keep on with the great job you do and God bless you and your team. YOU ARE THE BEST.

I hired Chef Doris Worthington and her team at "Now That Was A Great Party" to cater my sister's 75th surprise birthday party on Sunday, April 9, 2017. It was by far the best decision I could have made. I found their catering service through Thumb Tack, and took a chance to use the service, because all the coordination had to be done long distance; by telephone, text and Email. This catering service is Top Notch. They lived up to their word and their website advertisement. They were very professional and knowledgable about their customer's catering needs. Doris was able to offer several suggestions which helped to enhance the success of our party. Every detail was perfectly coordinated by the Caterer; from the table displays (which were beautiful), to the choice of colors to blend in with our color scheme; to perfecto food choices. The food was absolutely delicious. My sister was totally surprised and most pleased with the service and the food. We could not have asked for better service. We are very grateful to Chef Doris and her team at "Now That Was A Great Party". They certainly lived up to the business name. We had a great time and would not hesitate to use them again, and refer their service to others.

After speaking with two caterers who contacted me through thumbtack I was not imporessed by their professionalism and flexibility. Nick was different he never said no to any of my requests and put me at ease. I was surprised by how young he was when we first met yet he was inredibly knowledgeable and patient with my needs. The holiday party for the firm went very well even though the power went out halfway through! Nick's food was fantastic, especially the lamb slider and little raviolis! I would reccomend FIG in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
