Jason was professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. I initially requested a quote for unclogging the main drain. He mentioned a potential issue with a leaky pipe, which I patched up with a quick fix putty. He and his assistant Steve, explained how the putty can expand and the pipe can eventually burst causing a potential problem. He quoted me on both jobs (a fair and reasonable price) and did the job on the spot. He started at 6 PM and finished around 8:30 PM. The clogged drain was fixed, and I also avoided a future problem with the patched up leaky pipe. The pipe was replaced. The Job was done right, at a reasonable price, at hours that worked for my schedule. I will recommend Jason for any job and I will certainly hire him for future Jobs.

This was our first time using Thumbtack so we really didn't know what to expect but Manny made it into a positive experience. Manny was responsive, informative, and professional. He came to our residence on time and started the work right away. He quickly got our vanity plumbing working which had issues with a clog and pipe installation. He also unclogged our tub. We highly recommend Manny and would work with him again!

I needed to install a new through-the-wall A/C and was very concerned about insulation because there is a draft in the winter. It's summer now so not sure about the insulation but Varian took extra care of this piece and brought the necessary tools / equipment. Also was very responsive via text and I was able to book him in 48 hours. Great job!

On time and friendly polite people. The issue was a blower that was not working, everything checked out and it started again and turned out to be a loose insulation closing off flow so diagnostically a bit strange but it's working and fix simplistic so they offered a discount off quite. Would absolutely use again for HVAC and also seemed plumbing is in their area as well.

Hi my name is Jennifer, my husband & I live in a 2 story house in the Bronx. We used Joseph's services for plumbing issues we were having. Our bathroom sink was leaking water & our hot water was not working. We had Joseph come over to checkout the problem & he was very understanding about the severity of our situation. We have two kids so we needed our sink & especially our hot water working asap. Joseph was able to figure out the problem quickly. After he figured out that there was a cracked pipe under the sink & a faulty thermocouple in our hot water heater, he explained to us the procedure necessary. He sounded very familiar with these type of situations. He told us he runs into these problems quite often. My husband and I felt confident in giving him the job. Joseph was very pleasant, professional & very considerate of our property, he made sure that nothing got dirty or damaged. He even told a few silly jokes that had our children laughing. We would definitely recommend his services to others.

Greivin was on time and very professional. He Demo'd out my bathroom tile floor and subfloor to access a broken drain pipe. He taped and protected the surrounding so dust wasn't every where. I would use his services again.

In the process of selling our home and needed to replace the water heater and a corroded pipe. Ed completed the job as promised and went beyond the scope of the job by replacing a rusted vent that we did not notice before. Overall we are completely satisfied and would recommend him to anyone who needs plumbing done. Thanks Ed!

I was coordinating moving our office into a bigger space. We needed the electrical wiring and terminations done as well as 2 large TVs mounted and installed. Paul was able to come the same day I requested the job and was finished by the weekend. It was a big job and he got it done quickly and seamlessly. Very professional and responsive.

I reached out to Mike this morning and he made it by our place after his other job finished today. We texted, I sent some photos of our leaking pipe under our kitchen sink and by tonight I have a new pipe that is perfect and new! He gave me a bid, picked up what he needed and told me what that would be additional to his fee for the supplies for the work. Very reasonable by the way. He texted me along the way when the subway was stopped due to police action and kept me posted on his ETA. He was friendly and professional, my dog liked him too! He went to work and knew exactly what he was doing. (My husband watched intently and asked questions...he likes to learn new things.) Everything was done professionally, he cleaned up, tested the pipe and was on his way. I will definitely use him again and would recommend him to anyone who needs work done around their apartment or home. He is a real gem and I am thrilled we found our 'handyman'. I can't wait to get other things done!!

Whenever you seek help from an online service it’s a crapshoot. After all, you are dealing with a stranger. Well, getting Danny Goldstein to pressure wash my deck proved to be a delightful experience. He responded immediately, asked for a fair price and did a tremendous job. Really that’s what you hope for. But he exceeded that. When he came to do the job and began working I discovered a leaking pipe in my basement( nothing to do with Danny, more accurately winter temperatures caused it). But it rendered the spigot unusable. He helped me mitigate the problem, packed his equipment and told me to call him when I had the pipe fixed. When I did he responded right away and fit me in at a time that was convenient for me. His work was impeccable doing more than what was asked to do and doing so in a way that was not only professional but respectful and friendly. So good was the whole experience that I am half looking forward to my deck getting dirty because I now know a guy that does a wonderful job cleaning them.

Manny was extremely professional, he took the time to really explain to me what the issue was and the best and most cost effective way to resolve it. In addition to that he was very respectful of my tenants property and time. Thank you Manny for providing such great service, I really appreciate you coming to my property and taking care of the frozen pipe on my tenants apartment. I will definitely recommend you to my friends and family for all their plumbing needs. Thanks again and take care!

We had a pipe burst on a Sunday morning. Cesar came out, provided a good solution on Sunday so we had some water, and came back and fixed a more complicated dual tank hot water system the next day after supply stores were open. If you like good, honest and capable... he’s all that

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
