I originally wanted one hedge (5-ft) removed and another 12 ft hedge trimmed. Ozzy determined that he could cut the 5ft hedge level with the ground but would not be able to get the roots and stumps completely. I agreed to him cutting it level with the ground because the hedge was large enough to partially block my view when driving in or out of my driveway and I felt it was unsafe. We negotiated the price and he did not want a down payment. Actually, he said that I could pay when he's finished and I am satisfied with his work. He started on Tuesday and came back today (Thursday) to complete the work. He cleaned up all the waste and removed it. He also trimmed a tree in front of my house and sprayed some pesky weeds on my sidewalk and driveway. Ozzy is a pleasant fellow and I would definitely use his services again.

Rich called me immediately and met me around my schedule. He gave me a great price for cleanup, planted shrubs and mulch for my beds. It came out great!! I liked it so much that I contracted him to cut my lawn. My neighbors liked him too and he got 2 more jobs on my street. Great sense of humor too!

We initially hired Douglas for landscaping services, installation of top soil and sod. We subsequently hire him to replace fencing in need of repair. The services were done professionally, timely and correctly the first time. All work promised was completed and on time. I would not hesitate to hire Douglas again in the future.

I’m not one to usually write reviews but felt I had to because Justin was wonderful! Quick to respond, answered all my questions (...and I had tons of them!), fair price, & no pressure. Once I had made a decision on whom to use he scheduled me right away. My property is larger than average 3/4 off an acre and had no been cleaned since end of summer. Kevin and another fellow spent all day cleaning and left my property looking great! They even planted a fig tree for my mother. I’d use them again in a heart beat and plan to do so next season.

Luca, had to pull up sod that was dying, rebrick around some plants, plant grass seeds and place some mulch around 4 plants and a plant strip. He said he would be at my house by 8 a.m. He was outside working on my yard before 6:30 a.m. and completed the job before 9:30 a.m. Luca not only was on time, but he also did an excellent job. I intend to use his services for any landscaping job that I have. He comes highly recommended. Thank you Luca.😊

Honest. Hard working. Meticulous. Clean. On time. If you can get Luden and his crew you're in luck. Hands down the best that I have worked with. They dig mulching, dig in unique flower beds, spring clean up, light planting and garden tilling. Great guys. Will use again.

We had an excellent experience working with The Contractors Group on the repair of our existing retaining wall and the addition of a brand new patio, built-in grill and sitting wall. They worked hard, showed up every day early and stayed late to finish everything. They added insight on every step of the process, from the materials to the plantings. We could't be happier with the final results- it's even better than we imagined! I would highly recommend The Contractors Group for any of your outdoor work- you're getting a professional and detail-oriented team, who care deeply about making their clients happy!

I’m so so glad I found Daniel! I wanted to put up lighting in my backyard but hadn’t no idea how to accomplish it. Daniel was prompt, professional, and gave thoughtful advice about options to consider and the pros and cons based on design and how it might feel in the space. He then drew up a sketch to map it out and plan what we would need. He came back the very next day and the end result of his work was beyond anything I could have imagined. He even helped me do some last minute planting while there because I had some plants waiting to go in. His work is clean, precise and very professional and a great value. He’s also kind, friendly and clearly has the mind of an engineer + designer, a rare combo to find. I plan to hire him back in the spring to help me with landscaping. Highly recommend!

We are a tenant owned building on Convent Avenue in Harlem. We started a garden in the back alley several years ago. This year we decided that we needed to stream line our layout to achieve a cleaner look. We also wanted to plant more perennial foliage so that each year our backyard planting wouldn't be so cumbersome. I had a meeting with Don and he understood exactly what we were trying to achieve! Don was a pleasure to work with. He visited our courtyard space, assessed our area, made recommendations, and planted away. We have a courtyard space that has limited sunlight. Don pointed out tips that would aide our existing planting in the space and suggested appropriate plants to purchase. He was expeditious with his time in designing and planting. We are happy to have met Don and utilized his services Thanks again Don!

Chris was great!!! Our store front in Gowanus, Brooklyn was in need of attention. It was so boring and dry until Chris came with his great idea to have some nice trees planted that required low maintenance to save us some money. I will definitely use him again and will hire him to maintain my store front. Highly recommended!!

Jennifer and her team (which includes her partner/husband who is a contractor) did an amazing job on our patio in Soho, which had been neglected for quite some time. First of all, when I contacted her she was promptly responsive and soon after came to visit our place. Second, she gave us a very reasonable estimate and also some options at different price levels. We choose to have her spruce up our garden by (among other things) replanting/changing soil, replacing a tree that was not doing well, planting seasonals, trimming and otherwise making our beloved plants and flowers happy again. She also installed an irrigation system at a very reasonable price, and even came out again to adjust the system when we moved some pots around to install new furniture. We are so happy not to have to always water the plants by hand! All in all, a terrific experience!! We look forward to working with her more in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
