IK Fitness is wayyy above the rest. Ian is knowledgeable in all aspects of training, nutrition and fitness. I started with him in 2005. He provided a whole plan of cardio, weight training, and nutrition. He allowed me to achieve my goals, was forever encouraging and always ready to push me when I got lazy! The workouts are great and never boring, but the best part of Ian is the follow up he provided when I wasn't in the gym, just to check in on my progress!!! Super professional

I'm on my 2nd week with Alexis on a 4 week program. I chose to work with Alexis because she was the only nutritionist who followed up with an email to schedule a call to discuss my needs. She offered to meet me in person, measure me, check my pantry, and make sure I was set for the program. She's very responsive to texts and emails. Even though I talk to her on the phone once a week, I feel like she's right there supporting me along the way. I really love her approach to nutrition. It's not about deprivation but she also reminds me that it is a lifestyle change and I have to break my bad habits. I love my results so far and cannot wait until week 4 to see where I am. She is literally teaching me how to eat probably and treat my body with respect.

I had a wonderful experience with my 1 hour over the phone appointment. I was nervous since i haven't consulted with a nutritionist before. Cori was very professional and friendly. She went over my history, my medical issues I'd like to get under control, my goals and a realistic way to achieve them. I told my husband it was like talking to a friend that just so happened to be a certified nutritionist. I appreciated her honest help and look forward to further coaching with her. I will be recommending her to my friends and family!

Osondu is my private trainer, working on strength, condition, and mixed martial arts in aquatic environments. His workouts are excellent, I feel his skills are top notch and state of the art, and I thoroughly enjoy the combination of professional and personal relationship. He's been flexible with my schedule for working out, and our location for working out. I began working out with him about 3 years ago at Sports Club LA, and then decided to pursue a private training relationship with him. I highly recommend his services.

When I started working with Priya a few years ago, I thought I was hiring a holistic nutritionist. But she helped me in SO many different areas of my life and made me understand how it all balances out and its impact on my digestion and weight. She helped me work through some difficulties at my job, and gave me tools to manage my high levels of stress which led to a 20-lb weight loss in just 3 months. I also loved the flexibility she offered by doing all our visits online, which worked right into my hectic schedule. For anyone trying to lose weight, I highly recommend working with her!

Jane Mitchell has helped me by personally designing an exercise program to fit my needs. I have an auto-immune disease that also affects my bones, and exercise and good nutrition is important. Jane has helped me immensely in both places. She is passionate and extremely competent about her role in helping clients. Additionally Jane is very caring and kind. I highly recommend Jane Mitchell and I am glad to call her my friend.

“My name is Judy Boksner and it brings me so much pleasure to write on behalf of Marina Shevel who has been my nutritionist and integrative health coach for the past few years. She is one of the most caring and supportive people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I have had food issues my entire life. As a child my nick- name was skinny bones. I could eat anything and everything and still be as skinny as a stick. As the years went by and I had children of my own, I never truly enjoyed food and became more of just a snacker that craved sweets. My body also changed and I went from being super skinny to being a mid sized woman. It became difficult to accept the changes in my body. I was literally addicted to apple strudel and Diet Coke. I never thought in my life that I would give up these things. Well I have. The changes that I have made this year have been dynamic. I now drink only water and seltzer. I no longer look at a Diet Coke and yearn for it like I did in the past. I haven’t had an apple strudel in over 6 months. Bread was my biggest craving in life and now I don’t eat it. I’m not going to lie some days are harder than others and some days I eat more gluten free cookies than I should, but overall I’m moving in a better direction and feel happier about the choices I am making. My body finally has learned to crave foods that are healthier for me. I now enjoy things such as pecans, kale, and Brussels sprouts. It’s purely amazing. Marina helps you make changes in your life slowly and gradually. She accepts that each person is different and unique and always gives you options. She clearly understands that changes will only take place if a person is comfortable doing something. What I also truly liked, is that she works together with your doctor. She encouraged me to get blood work done by my physician to see if I had any nutritional deficiencies, etc. I am a bit scared of doctors but she was supportive and encouraging and got me to take this important step. Marina delves deep into the emotional connection to health and well being. She has helped me accept my imperfections and realize they are what make me unique and special. Lastly, Marina has helped me improve my sleep. I have struggled with sleep issues for over 20 years. I have finally with her guidance and support found naturally remedies. I have been off of nasal steroids and medications for over two years now. Marina is purely a wonderful human. She will hold your hand in the initial stages and really get to know you. She will gradually release the level of support as needed and help you continue your journey. She’s always available on good days and bad to reach out via text message. If I’m having a really bad day she’s there to cheer me on and remind me how far I’ve come. She’ll also reach out often on her own with wonderful research based articles or words from the heart to check on progress and continue to provide support. Her professionalism and passion is unparalleled in the industry. I can’t recommend her enough. It will be a worthwhile investment.”

Aly is such a great nutritionist. The diet she has recommended me has worked wonders in only two weeks of adapting it to my everyday. She is lovely, well-spoken, knows what she is talking about, always present when you need her, always following up and concerned about you. I must say I was kinda uncertain of her professionalism before meeting with her, because she doesn't have her own office space in NYC so we had to meet at a random cafe, though it was worth it!!! As they say: " Do never judge a book by its cover." She's OUTSTANDING!!!

Lisa is an extraordinary person. Kind, warm, knowledgeable, patient, attentive, guiding without ever being condescending, full of answers - but answers that are grounded in you nourishing your own power. Her work goes so far beyond food and exercise - which is why it is effective - because weight loss is never just about food and exercise. For such a messy difficult topic, she is the incredibly rare person who can actually help you make true progress while enjoying the process. I have never encountered a nutritionist, diet/food book or expert who comes anywhere close to the realm within which Lisa operates. I give her my highest recommendation. Working with Lisa has been a dramatic life changer. Not only that I dropped 3 jean sizes but I’ve developed healthy eating and exercise habits that allow me to maintain my current weight (which used to be my goal weight) with ease. I still continue working with her to further reach my health and body goals because Lisa’s coaching, guidance and support is that good and helpful!

Dara is a knowledgeable nutritionist who helped me lose 12 pounds so far. When I first came to her, my blood pressure was too high and sugar was out of control. She is guiding me to slowly change the way I eat and I have made lasting changes. She is very understanding and I have learned so much about eating the right foods and how it's important to eat every 4 hours. I would definitely recommend her for weight loss or diabetic diet or anyone looking to eat healthier.

I'm so glad I hired Tawnya! She is an outstanding chef. Not only does she cook delicious food but she is a great nutritionist - knowledgeable and intuitive. I needed input for a project that required knowledge of budgeting, familiarity with a range of ingredients and confident cooking skills. Tawnya delivered all of these to deadline and was collaborative, professional and a great leader.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.
