Apex Test Prep was well worth the investment for my GMAT studies. Mike helped me raise my score from 630 to 700 in 6 weeks. I had been trying to breakthrough on the quant section for two years with no success. Mike's deep understanding of how the test is constructed helped me to see it in a way that allowed me to perform significantly better on the test. He is a GMAT wizard, I would highly recommend!Dec 14, 2015Verified
Apex Test Prep was great! Mike talked me through the whole test taking process, gave me the confidence and tools to work through each problem, and explained everything thoroughly and patiently. I was really happy with my overall experience!Dec 14, 2015
With just 3 weeks to go leading up to my GMAT re-take, I decided I needed expert coaching to help me overcome my “plateau” on the Quant section. I was stuck scoring in the low to mid 40’s which was preventing me from hitting my 700+ goal. I couldn’t have asked for a better coach than Mike Diamond from Apex Test Prep. Mike’s approach of looking at different solution paths and understanding the GMAT’s various underlying problem forms helped me to start thinking like a test writer, not a test taker. Even in a short amount of time working together, this mindset is the key difference that I credit with my score improvement. I scored a 750 on the GMAT thanks to my highest Quant score to date! In our assessment session, Mike quickly identified my strengths and weaknesses and accurately developed a sense for my learning style. He made our 1 on 1 sessions feel personalized and constantly asked for feedback on his performance to tailor the experience to my expectations. He also helped me get the most out of my self-prep by assigning me actionable homework to apply what we worked on together on my own. Mike quite literally will do anything for his students. During our time together, Mike had a bout with pneumonia that required a brief hospitalization. But in a couple of days he was back at it and helping me prepare for my big day. Thank you Mike and Apex for preparing me with the skills and confidence to perform my best on test day.Jan 10, 2017
Mike helped me prep for the GRE. After years of not being in school and having very little math experience, Mike quickly brought me up to speed and helped me increase my score by 10 percentage points. Mike is amazing at what he does. He will challenge you, explain concepts in ways that will make sense for your specific learning style, and he is very patient and encouraging. There is no doubt I would not be have been able to do as well as I did on the GRE without Mike's help. Mike not only made me a better test taker, but I now feel confident in my math ability which has helped tremendously in graduate school. If you're looking for a tutor who will truly bring you to the next level, Mike is your guy.Dec 19, 2015
12/2/17 (response to Apex comments): Mike's response further supports my original comments around his greed and lack of flexibility. 1) He says, "Demanding a large score increase within a fixed time frame is sometimes not possible." I scored a 700 on my first attempt and was looking to raise into minimum 720/730 (and I had already achieved this score on multiple practice tests and send him these scores, so he was well aware of where I started). Calling this a "large score increase" implies he struggles to tutor efficiently. In his original email to me after my inquiry, he wrote to me, "Most clients seeking improvement from a 700-level score utilize about 10 hours of session work, enough to work through the higher order, abstract thinking skills and meta-strategy necessary to break through the GMAT's final scoring plateau into elite territory. Sessions can be structured according to your preference, so five 2-hour sessions is perfectly fine." He literally is telling me five 2-hour sessions is fine. To then draw me into a two-hour assessment, take my money and essentially refuse to continue to tutor me is called bait and switch. 2) I already had a 46 in Quant and had consistently scored in this range on practice tests. I knew a few points boost in Verbal would drive my score into the 720-730 range, but Mike was very focused on Quant for me and retraining me completely. He was reluctant to put more focus on Verbal in the tutoring sessions to see what could be improved there to get my score up and was obsessed with changing how I approach Quant. This demonstrates his inflexibility in tutoring style. Might work for someone with an unlimited budget of time and money - not for someone looking for a targeted approach. 3) If it takes Mike a year to help someone meet a 20-30 point improvement, then good luck working with him. He very specifically blamed my inability to commit to more hours on my PREGNANCY. This by definition is unethical, unprofessional and discriminatory. 4) By all means, speak with him and get references from him. If he's the one giving you the names of the clients, my guess is he's going to connect you with those who were happiest with the services. Just food for thought. There are just way too many GMAT services in NYC who are more honest, flexible and professional to treat any potential client in a dishonest and unprofessional fashion. He also told me I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who could help me w/in budget and time frame, but I'm happy to say I found multiple tutors/companies willing to help me. I'm glad I wasn't spooked by his comments and condescending comments and found what I needed! 11/27/17: I have nothing positive to say about Mike and Apex. I was looking to improve my GMAT score within a relatively tight time frame, and he initially said he was fine with providing ten hours of tutoring for me. To get started, I'd need to do a two-hour assessment with him. After the assessment, he was reluctant to provide an outline for ten hours of tutoring and insisted that I would need many more hours to improve my score (hence putting things way above my budget). This was of course after he had the $400+ in his pocket from the two hour assessment (aka bait and switch). He has no shame either. A big driver for working on an accelerated timeline was because I was pregnant and wanted to get another GMAT attempt out of the way sooner rather than later. He even dared to tell me I should consider taking the GMAT IN A YEAR when my pregnancy wasn't an issue (because apparently to him it was an issue and he thought it was his place to communicate that). He clearly overstepped his boundaries here. Not only is he someone who demonstrated greed and lack of flexibility in building a tutoring plan catered to the needs and constraints of his client, but also he personifies the rampant discrimination against women balancing family and building a career. Anyone concerned about the business practices and moral standards of the people they pay should avoid working with Apex.Dec 2, 2017
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?Tutoring is offered in ten hour units. Brush ups or meta-test problems are usually handled in ten hours, while more extensive prep generally takes between 20 and 30 hours. We pay our instructors top dollar to attract the best talent, and our experts often have advanced degrees; JDs, MBAs, and others from top schools, meaning that they are seasoned professionals that are in demand across multiple industries. Our live tutoring prices range from $300-325 per hour, and online lessons in our state of the art classroom cost between $225 and $300 per hour.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? Our first step is always to learn about each client: their academic goals, score range, and background. Then we delve deeper into their learning style, cognitive proclivities, preferred solution paths, and their background with tests. We also inquire about timing issues and test/math anxiety, both of which are very common, and also surmountable. Following the initial intake (which is not charged), we will then work with them in the initial session to get to know them more deeply as learners, and from there deliver a personalized assessment and study schedule, which is then reviewed and agreed upon between the client and instructor, and provides a dynamic framework that keeps the client on target and seeing results at scheduled points in the prep process.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?Apex has the most stringent hiring requirements in the test prep world. Each has scored in the top half of the top 1% of their respective exams. More importantly, all of Apex's instructors have loads of experience in the classroom and undergo extensive training before working with clients.
