Introduction: Thinking it might be a difficult winter? Wanting to get ahead of the game and line up some support in case you need a place to talk? If so, I'd be glad to hear from you. My specialty is working with bright, creative people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who are high achievers and hard workers. I create a place where you can talk, be yourself, and get some insight and support. I really enjoy helping you integrate your work ethic with your sensitivity in order to become even more skilled at relating with others and even more efficient at your work. I pay close attention to the mind-body connection, helping you build awareness of your breathing and body sensations. These awarenesses are foundational to your relationship with your self, and key to growing healthy participation in your relationships with others. I help you develop these skills in a grounded way so you can take them anywhere.

Relationship Counseling

I consulted with Mr. Piper for couples counseling. I had the impression that he was genuinely interested in understanding my relationship, and I valued his authenticity. I do not hesitate to recommend others to him.

Brent has a physical presence, which grounds our relationship. I feel completely at ease 5 - 10 minutes into our sessions, even when I am very anxious and/or restless at the beginning. He is very caring, and I feel this the entire time I am with him. He has a natural and unconditional curiosity about me, but he is not intrusive at all. He is very economical in terms of his use of language. Bottom line: highly recommended if you are looking for a grounding, curious, caring and physically present therapist.

Brent is a good communicator and has always been very professional in his demeanor, he is always on time and easy to schedule appointments with. I was a little nervous when I went to my first appointment, but have gotten much more comfortable over time. Brent is very present in the room, he gives me a lot of eye-contact, and shows genuine compassion. While it can sometimes be difficult, the work that I do with Brent has allowed me to get to know myself better, and has significantly improved the relationships I value most in my life. His office, while very simple and unadorned, has a warm atmosphere, and is very conveniently located. I have found my work with Brent to be very valuable, and highly recommend him as a coach.

It has been an amazing journey. Brent is very smart and sensitive. He has always been present, and never pushed for any "not-ready-yet" process. The conversation can be really deep if you dare to explore; psychotherapy is about challenging yourself for inner awareness and change though, so I've gladly taken that. And most importantly --My words, feelings and emotions were always seen, heard and held (instead of being packed up and thrown away). The procedure of change is so painful and scary, and I've experienced a lot of disconnections before with other therapists, but this did not happen with Brent, and I take this as the most precious part of him. We struggled a little bit at the beginning for a schedule that worked for both of us, considering my REAL crazy working hours, but that's all I can think of (for a semi-complaint). The experience turns out to deserve all the efforts.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Sessions are 45 minutes. My rate is $250 and I slide to $200. I only accept insurance that pays out of network benefits. This means you're responsible for paying your fee, and I'll write you a receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I'll listen to what you want to work on and offer my guidance and insight. Your work will be unique to you.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I’m licensed as a Mental Health Counselor, LMHC, with a Master’s degree from NYU. Currently, I recently finished a 4 year post graduate certification from Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy. Gestalt therapy focuses on building awareness of mind and body while working on the intricacies of interpersonal relationships. Due to extensive personal therapy and professional training, I’m well-suited to work with trauma, and do a lot of work with people who have been through a lot. I have a handful of other professional experiences and trainings that make me who I am as a therapist. I became a certified hypnotist from the NLP Center in New York, I’ve trained for a year and a half in DBT and run DBT groups, I’ve trained at the Center for Group Studies. I’ve also trained with the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society. Additionally, I’ve worked extensively with people diagnosed with schizophrenia. I’ve run groups in the New York State Juvenile Justice System. And before I became a full-time therapist and coach, I worked as a counselor at a wilderness therapy program for at-risk teens, after which I worked for several years as a life coach with Post-9/11 veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project. These different experiences have given me a broad base of experience which I bring to my work with each individual. And two other sources of inspiration for my work are my meditation practice and my love of reading. I started working in private practice as a life coach 2014, and have been working as a therapist and coach since.
