Margaret is a a wonderful editor: thorough, clear, and not afraid to say what has to be developed or deleted, and why. From her edit of one of my short stories alone, I can begin to imagine how accomplished a writer she must be. I just bought one of her books on amazon

The project was to find a professional resume writer who could create a resume and cover letter for a retiree with 25+ years of experience to apply for an administrative part-time position. I believe the comments below speak for themselves. First reaction, "WOW”. I really wasn't too optimistic that she would be able to take what I provided her and craft it in such a way to get so much information into 1 page. Of course my expectation was an improvement over what I provided, but she really took it to another level; I was amazed! To have someone who truly understands ... respects my feelings is absolutely priceless. I guess the best way I can say this, is the professionalism, sincerity and genuine commitment to my project is something we all as consumers wish we could experience with any company we do business with! Well done!" Thank you so much for a job “Well done”!

I had a great experience with Write for life, David T. I would work with him again on other projects in the near future. As a beginner writer, he listened to my voice, and develop the style to a professional level. Thank you.

This was not my first effort trying to use a content writer and I had a negative opinion of all content writers after my first experience. Malory from “The Missing Ink” quickly changed my opinion about the value and opportunity a skilled writer can offer to a company. Malory is an excellent content writer and capable of writing about almost anything. She is punctual and created a beautiful 2,700 words of awesome content and she made it in a day. Based upon her first sample writing effort, I was so impressed that i have already given her new projects to tackle and plan to utilize her unique skills into the foreseeable future.

I thought JT was great to work with. He really took the time to speak with me and get my vision for where I wanted my content to go and say. If you are considering a content writer, I would highly recommend JT as he takes his time and gets it done right.

Max was a delight to work with. He tutored my son for 2 years when we were in Shanghai, China. Our son was in middle school at the time, (7th and 8th grade) and he needed help in getting organized and concentrating on his school work. I interviewed Max and selected him because of his warmth and engaging personality. He is also a writer and, at the time, our son was really into drama and creative writing so we thought that would inspire him. Max was so patient with our son who, at times, could be exasperating. Max would just roll with it and find a way to re-engage him. I don't think our son would have done as well as he did in school if it weren't for Max. Our whole family loved seeing Max, including our housekeeper who got a kick out of talking with Max in Mandarin. We highly recommend Max! He was sensitive to our son's moods and figured out how to motivate him, he was always punctual and very reliable.

Lea is an amazing writer. I had the privilege of working with her for two years in college where she reviewed and edited my papers that consisted of many different subjects. Not only does she correct grammatical and structural errors, she guides you to generate powerful and innovative ideas for thesis statements. In addition, she is an outstanding creative writer. She pushes you to go outside of your comfort zone. Thank you, Lea! Your words will change the world.

Peter was a an excellent coach for my writing project. He brings a unique perspective based on years of experience as a business writer. Peter covered all the basics -- grammar, composition, etc. -- and then provided additional input from the point of view of the reader. I highly recommend him.

Allison is an exceptionally good writer and editor. I worked with her to revamp my resume and cover letters after passing the bar exam, and I couldn't be more pleased with the result. She was supportive of the things that might help me stand out from the crowd while keeping a keen eye on industry standards. She also pushed me to tout my accomplishments, rather than downplay them, as we women often do. Allison is diligent, professional, and encouraging. If you have the opportunity to work with her, you'll be in great hands.

Virginia helped me write content for my website. When I first met with Virginia I was all over the place and didn’t know what I wanted to say or had too much to say. She guided me through the process of coming up with content and asked key questions to help narrow down what my content would be. In the end she took my jumble thoughts and created concise clear wording about my company. I learned more from working with Virgina than I imagined and don’t have anything to change. She is extremely professional, engaging and thorough.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
