I really enjoy my lessons with Johannes. He is very meticulous, resourceful and flexible in his teaching. He uses easy to understand analogies to explain the various mechanisms of violin-playing and why certain techniques help improve sound quality. This is especially useful for an adult beginner like me, who need to be convinced of the logic behind it before following/ remembering instructions. I also love that he holds me to the same standard as his students who want to pursue a career in music—honing the basic skills and emphasizing intonation from the very beginning. Johannes is patient but you know that he can tell if you didn't practice. I highly recommend taking lessons with him.

Johannes took care of my cat while I was away for half a week. He followed all the instructions and sent me photos every day. I could tell my baby was as happy as when I left! I'll hire him again if I'm in the same situation.

Details: Cat • 1 pet • Changing litter or bedding • Providing companionship • Giving food and water • Short visit (30 minutes) • Two times a day • I travel to the pet sitter • The pet sitter travels to me

What I love the most about Johannes is the fact that he treats his beginner-intermediate students just like his music major students or those who are preparing to audition for conservatories or precolleges. I've studied with him for about 3 years so far. I had learned the violin for a couple of years before him but had no basic technique secured and struggled a lot with tone production and overall playing quality. He put equal amount of focus on basic posture and technique with me as he does with his more serious music major students. He's obviously slower-paced with repertoire than other violin teachers who make students play a lot of pieces very poorly in a short amount of time. But each piece and etude I work on with him sounds like what I have never imagined myself would be able to sound like before. Now I know where the bow should be placed with what arm positions and muscle movements for the best quality tone production, and how the left hand should be framed and driven for secure intonation and flexibility, all thanks to Johannes. As long as you practice just the way he asks you to (which often requires you to be incredibly slow and patient), he'd never ever give up on you and never let you play poorly for years with no noticeable improvement! At first I felt as though I wasn't learning much, because he didn't give me a lot of fun pieces I really wanted to play. But 6 months to a year later, I sounded completely different and was able to play some pieces with much better tone and volume. As long as he's in New York, I'll keep studying with him.

I think careful analysis and education are paramount in any and everything. I'm extremely satisfied and feel like I've grown as a player immensely already.

When I met with Johannes, he provided new and thoughtful insight to my playing; not only did he provide new insight, he also helped me find new and more enticing ways to practice at home.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I always ask what their short term and long term goals are as we start the teacher-student relationship. I work on basics and tone quality with every student regardless of their performance level. But if someone only wants to learn the instrument for fun and doesn't seek to go to a major conservatory and become a professional musician, I'd give them enjoyable pieces and work in faster pace. While I work slower, more pragmatic, and more detailed with someone who has goals more towards the professional musicianship.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Know what your goals are. If you don't care too much for your overall playing quality but only want to have fun learning as many pieces as possible, go for teachers who introduce you to various pieces and work on each piece with you for a short period of time. But if you want to progress slowly but more significantly in the next 5-10 years, go for teachers who do work on your basic technique and tone quality. I obviously teach in the latter style.
