Introduction: At Innovative Voice Studio, our mission is simple: sing free and easy. It's our goal to train your instrument to be comfortable, sustainable, and also uniquely expressive. Our clients have appeared on Broadway and in National Tours of SIX, Hamilton, 1776, Ain't Too Proud, Fiddler on the Roof, Hadestown, Grease, The Last Ship, American Idiot, Finding Neverland, Hair, West Side Story, Hello Dolly, 42nd Street, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Hairspray, South Pacific and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Students also are recording artists on major record labels and in popular bands. The beauty of private training is that you receive individual attention specific to your own goals and needs. No two voices are the same; therefore, no two lessons are the same. This is the best part of the job for us- finding a way into your unique voice and using the necessary tools to make you shine. We also offer workshops, where you'll be part of a growing community of like-minded, fun, inspired people who share a common goal of improved vocal function and honest artistic communication. We work in a supportive, relaxed environment where we can all learn from each other and have fun while doing it!

Tim is not only the best voice teacher I've ever had but one of the best music teachers I've ever had. He's able to describe the physical elements of singing methodically and clearly, so that I understand not only what to do but why, which is important when you're later practicing on your own. And the lessons are insanely fun -- my wife and I took a joint lesson and had a blast. I think voice lessons with Innovative are going to be the new salsa dancing. I'd recommend either private lessons or one of their workshops. Jenna is great too!

I started lessons with Tim less than 2 weeks before I needed to sing in a wedding reception. I am a complete beginner with no vocal training whatsoever. He was very accommodating with my schedule and really helped me every step of the way to get to where I should be. He even squeezed me in his busy schedule the day before the wedding to make sure I will do good and I did. He is extremely talented with his voice and at the same time his teaching skills. He makes it easy to understand for beginners and for students like me who does not know anything about music theory or reading notes. I also felt that he customized my lessons based on my immediate needs. After the event, I continued to take lessons from him structured around defined goals that he helped me set. Needless to say, I am still very happy and thrilled to be under his mentorship. I recommend him highly without any reservation and would be wiling to answer any questions if needed. Thanks Tim!

I have been working with Tim for about 3 years and I am beyond pleased with the improvement in my singing since choosing to study with him! the techniques I now utilize have allowed me to sing for far longer without experiencing vocal fatigue (singing in a healthy way!) During out lessons, we focus on strengthening and clarifying head voice, breath, vocal health and ease. Tim has a knack for explaining concepts and exercises in such a way that I can understand, experiment with, and implement them! I love that he helps with upcoming auditions and inspires me to sing different kinds of music. I have worked both in his home studio and spaces around city- Tim is always reliable and my lesson is a bright spot in week!! Whether singing for fun or for your career, I absolutely recommend that you study voice with Tim Russell!

Jenna expertly blends holistic vocal instruction with humor and kindness. She is constantly coming up with new exercises to address your evolving singing needs, and she goes above and beyond to support you in your career outside the lesson. It's clear that she is equally passionate about teaching vocal technique as she is about performing it. I've had several voice teachers in NYC, and I am delighted to have found her. She has definitely given me an edge as a singer that I hadn't found until I met her.

Tim is a great instructor! I was with him for summer while I was away from school, and I had had a voice lesson for a year before.. My teacher before told me what to change (like "pass the breath through", but I was never told how to actually do it. So it was really hard to change my bad habits. When Tim told me what to change, he told me "how to" by demonstrating several activities that use body... It was really helpful, and I'm looking forward to work with him again when I come back.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Tim and Jenna are professional performers and teachers based in NYC who both hold Masters degrees in Music and Vocal Pedagogy from New York University. They are active members of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing, NYSTA (New York Singing Teachers Association), and Opera America.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Tim and Jenna began teaching voice lessons in college, where they were both part of A Cappella groups and theater organizations. From there, they met in grad school at NYU in the Musical Theater and Vocal Pedagogy program. A few years later they decided to begin the Innovative Voice Studio!
What types of customers have you worked with?
We have worked with people from many different backgrounds -- from singers with Broadway, off-Broadway and national touring credits, to the casual shower singer, to the 9-5'er who wants to flex their creative artsy muscles. All experience levels and ages are welcome!
