Jerome hung two blinds for me and installed a window air conditioner with a bracket for support. I recently moved from a luxury building on the upper west side for more privacy. His professionalism and skill far surpassed any of the maintenance men staffed in that building.

It couldn't have been better! Manny is personable, talented and he knows what he's doing. He hung a two sided clock in my kitchen, a vintage mirror and window blinds. The mirror was somewhat difficult because of its age but Manny looked and thought and hung it beautifully and safely! I am very happy!

Mike arrived on time, prepared, and eager to help repair our broken window. He cleaned and measured the area, traveled to a hardware store to have the glass custom cut, came back and installed it-- all in an hour and a half! I will definitely be turning to him for my next fix.

Let me tell you first I changed 4 cleaning companies in less than a year. I'm a clean freak and I like things to be done in certain ways. I called Smart Cleaners right before the New Years day and they send Ioana in less than 2 hours. She was just fabulous, meticulous and thorough. She cleaned even the grout between the tiles in my bathroom. That's the first time when I see a maid doing that. I totally recommend them.

Frank did a phenomenal job hanging the Wallpapper. The job was difficult as it required many window cuts, etc. Frank knew exactly what he was doing and the final product is awesome. Not only is his work meticulous but he's the type of guy who takes 'old school' pride in his work and is only happy with a type of product he'd do on his own home. Frank spent a 12 hour day (it was hot) to get a large amount of work done. He has a great attitude and you know when you meet him his standards of work are high and that translates into a great final product. He's also a friendly guy who's a pleasure to have in your home. If you hire Frank have no doubt the job you get will be top notch. I'd recommend him to anyone. He is also skilled in several other areas of home improvement and I'm sure he carries the same attitude of workmanship into those jobs. Hire Frank with total confidence.

The Best Cleaning Service! Our tenants left our rental apartment a total mess and we called Seagull Cleaning Services. Prices were reasonable and they arrived early and brought all of their own supplies! They made the hardwood floors shine and the bathroom sparkle; they not only made an old refrigerator look brand new, they pulled it out and spotlessly cleaned the floor underneath and the walls behind it. I thought we would have to replace the bathroom sink since it was so gross, but they some how made it look like we just pulled it from the box. Every speck of dusk from the unseen top of the cabinets and window sills, to the darkest corner of every closet was removed. They made the apartment look like it was just constructed. I cannot imagine anyone doing a better job. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SEAGULL CLEANING!

Johnny was a pleasure to work with - from fair initial quote (which he held to), to scheduling, to his initial walk-through and then, of course, with the work itself. He cut wood to create shelves, replaced a number of light fixtures and adapted a few fixtures with ingenuity, hung window and bath hardware, an Ikea ceiling-mount channel thing, and - entirely outside of our original scope, diagnosed and rented the tool for removing an awful heavy iron door grill/gate. He was smart, knowledgeable, thoughtful, thrifty, accommodated changes...The real deal. Would/will hire again.

We had an excellent experience with DHI. Hugo and James were professional and thorough in the the work they completed for us. They went above and beyond what we contracted for a fair price. My house was left clean and they saved us money by salvaging our existing tiles and repairing a window instead of replacing it. We were completely satisfied with their work and are already planning on hiring them do another project.

Kevin is a lovely person and very easy to work with. He did wonderful work in several areas: fixing a drawer, painting a ceiling & window and extensive brick sealing. There's plenty more to do and I'm relieved to have found someone as competent and nice as Kevin.

These guys are AMAZING. I called with a window issue no one could solve until I found them. The next morning after I called they inspected the work and it was completed within 24 hours and to perfection. I had a deadline and they beat it by two days. This is my new go to company. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
