I was getting new furniture, and Tim moved some big pieces through some little doors down to the basement and/or the curb. I was very impressed by his professionalism and positive attitude. I was a little hesitant since this was my first time hiring from online but I was not disappointed, and I plan on having him clean my gutters in the spring.

Jim and his crew couldn't have possibly been more professional and trustworthy! Jim showed up to measure our property for an estimate on a Sunday! My wife and I had made many calls to 2 different contractors, both had been referred to us, one promised to have our fence done months ago and the other was insistent about us paying with cash, that is when we turned to thumbtack. We wish we would have done it months ago! Jim did countless hours of leg work calling the town and getting the sewer, gas and electric companies out to make sure everything was to code. Our Town is extremely strict and and a bit ridiculous, but JP Contracting addressed every one of our needs and hand built our fence so we had exactly what we wanted! There are 2 other projects that we need done, custom sliding doors and another outdoor project and we won't have anyone else do the work besides JP Contracting! Thank you again Jim and crew! True pros! If you ever need a referral give them my number! You guys rock!

Over 400 sf., including a 2 level ceiling, 2 window frames, 1 door frame, and woodwork, were skim-coated and sanded, then painted (2 coats), in 3 different colors. The dormered cape attic bedroom had Ralph Lauren Specialty Paint applied to its ceilings and Sherman Williams Paint applied to the walls. Scott did an excellent job; moreover, he protected the carpeting and consistently cleaned up after himself. My daughter is very happy with her room!

JP House Preservations cleaned out an area behind my garage that included removal of old items that we no longer needed as well as cement slabs. They also removed a pile of brush and helped to spread topsoil to level the surrounding land. They were extremely professional and efficient. Remarkably, they completed these tasks within 24 hours of my request for services. I highly recommend them.

I hired Don on three separate occasions during 2014 and plan on hiring him in 2015 to do needed work around our home, which is located in East Amherst. I find Don to be communicative with the customer, a professional and passionate in his work to ensure the work is of top quality and reasonably priced. Don's estimates of the work to be performed were accurate and complete. All changes to the scope of the work were primarily at my request, were thoroughly discussed with me and approved by me before work began. The work was finished in the time frame we agreed to up front. For substantially all of the work on these projects Don had a staff of two or three working with him. The staff was professional, just like Don, were very hard workers and pleasant to my wife and I. The first project was in our kitchen where a portion of the ceramic tile floor needed replaced, a new backsplash around the stove was installed and a sliding glass door between the kitchen and sun room was removed and replaced with a new door frame, which was stained and sealed. Don committed to a start date and an end date and he met those dates. This project was completed within a week. The work was of top quality. We wanted a border installed around the section of the kitchen floor being replaced and Don took his time to make sure it fit without excessive cuts to the border. This to me is a sign of his passion. The second project I hired Don to complete was to replace a 384 square foot treated wood deck. Don clearly explained to me up front that he could only quote on the surface of the deck and wouldn't know if the supports under the surface needed replaced until he and his team pulled off the old deck floor. Fortunately the supports were in good condition and this project was completed on time and in accordance with the estimate he provided. Don estimated the new deck would take three to four days and his estimate was met. Don hauled away all of the old deck and cleaned any and all debris. Again, Don was very communicative throughout this project making sure I knew when he was going to start and when he was going to complete. Don came back approximately six weeks later to stain this deck. He communicated up front when he would be on site and how long it would take and he met his timeframe. I had Don put two coats of stain which he did. The first day of staining he spent about a half day then left so the stain could properly dry then came back the next morning to put on the second coat of stain. This deck was done professionally and his work is excellent. The third project was a 360 square foot deck that I hired Don to replace. We had the same conversation when Don delivered the estimate that he can only estimate what he can see and wouldn't know if the supports under the deck floor needed replaced until he removed the old floor. The supports under this deck did in fact need replaced. Within a day I was provided a revised estimate to remove and replace all of the supports and at that time Don explained to me the timing to finish this deck. This deck was estimated to take six or seven days to complete and again Don met his schedule. Don completed this deck with the same level of professionalism and perfection that he did the first deck and kitchen work. We also agreed in advance to the revised work and timing of completing the work and he did the work in the time frame communicated to me. He came back several weeks later and stained this deck. Again, I am completely satisfied with the understanding Don had when he put the estimates together, the quality of the craftsmanship, the professionalism of he and his team as well as their meeting the goals in terms of timing we agreed to up front. I have recommended Don to our friends and family and would not hesitate to recommend Don to anyone. Also, I have already spoken to Don about additional work we would like to have completed on our home during 2015.

If I could give these guys six stars out of five I would but the app limits me to five stars. They are Great! I have an older home and due to poor maintenance I needed all the wood scraped and repainted. I sent out for bid on a Thursday afternoon , got a response Thursday night, and Joe was at my house Friday morning to provide me with a quote. I hired him and the following day my house and garage were both painted, in a day. From the initial Thumbtack email to the completed job only took 2.5 days. I highly recommend. Thanks again for the great job.

Our garage desperately needed painting and using Thumbtack, Wells Myers Painting answered our need. Anthony and Sara were very courteous and answered all of our questions. Their price was very reasonable and their work was outstanding. They took the time to ensure everything was cleaned up and even left us the remaining paint (some painters do not do that). We are more than satisfied with their work.

The star rating corresponds to building a project plan and cost structure prior to the start of services. The lot that Ideal Construction and Landscaping investigated to mow and clean up is located in another state from were I live. Hence I haven't seen the lot in a couple months. During a phone call with Dan, owner, he was in favor of taking photos of the lot prior to starting service, and to send them to me with a propossed service plan. I received the photos, and the service plan with cost, within the next business day. Dan built a professional relationship, understood the problem, and created a service plan. The service fee for the first clean up was well accepted. And ongoing mowing service is also scheduled. In addition, Dan and his team can help me with exterior and interior repairs to the house. Potential list of projects that they can manage for us are to strip and replace the first floor flooring, and also replacing interior and exterior windows & doors. Install dead bolts to improve safety as well. Looking forward, with appreciation.

I'm a property manager from New Jersey. My company owns various properties stretching from Maine to Florida. Recently I hired Chris and his crew to paint a 3 story apartment complex in Niagara falls(walls, trim, doors). He also replaced drywall, window sills, and installed some lighting fixtures for me. The job took him two weeks to complete and overall I must say he was great to work with. Being in New Jersey I had to communicate with him via phone(call/text) on a daily basis. Chris never missed a call. He was always punctual and professional in his attendance, and on top of that he Did a Great job!!..If I have any future projects, Cutting Edge will be my go to company. Thanks Chris!

Joel pressure washed my aluminum patio enclosure. It is 20 years old and the roof was badly stained and discolored. It is white again and looks like new! He also cleaned the stains off the back of the garage. Great job! I will definitely call him again.

We had a very good experience with Todd, and we will definitely use him in the future! He was on time, on price, very professional, experienced in our needs, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Todd worked with us to prepare our home for sale, paint several areas that needed it, power-washed our home, carriage house and garage, and generally gave it all a very clean, fresh look enabling us to list our property for sale. Todd knows what he is doing, and my wife and I would not hesitate to recommend him and use him on our other properties. Rickey & Vickey Niagara Falls, NY 05-06-2016

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
