I've only just begun my sessions with Vladimire, but so far, I'm extremely pleased. Vladimire is very passionate about her work. She contacted me on Thumbtack right away and we began our sessions the next week. She is committed to ensuring that her clients are honest with themselves and she helps her clients tackle the toughest issues they face. Vladimire is very honest and she is not the type of professional who will hide the ball--she will let you know exactly what she believes will help heal you and how to accomplish it. This worked for me but you should know that going into the session. I've had other therapists who are not as up front about their assessments (but I also stopped visiting them shortly after we began our sessions). Vladimire is also very accessible to her clients. I can call, text or email her and I will receive a quick response. I also appreciate the fact that Vladimire is not guarded or personally closed off--she uses her own testimony and life experiences to help clients understand that none of us are exempt from experiencing challenging situations. Overall, I'm very pleased with my work with Vladimire.

I've had to relocate several times for work, and each time I've had to get a new therapist. Alison is by far the best. I've done deeper work with her. Other therapists helped me understand my patterns and how they were formed, but Alison helped me change them. I can't say enough good things about how skilled and caring and professional she is!

Lorraine hits all the checks of a good therapist; she is warm, open, smart, compassionate, convivial and a great listener. Among the elements that set her apart and make her outstanding are that: she is prepared to sift through lots of chatter without being sidetracked, you can enjoy a relaxed conversation with her and still come back around to what's important, she never loses focus on the issues. Lorraine is very skilled at overcoming resistance. She is also good at helping you look at your own anger from your partner's perspective. She doesn't judge, she helps us look past petty distractions to common goals and positive elements. Without being overbearing she has many therapists tricks up her sleeve, which she uses to good effect to help people in the difficult process of self examination. For us as a couple she has been very helpful in guiding us to find compromises and common ground. In every way she puts her clients needs first, in terms of scheduling, payment and within the sessions themselves, she is flexible and fair. During our treatment we transitioned from office visits to FaceTime without any hiccups. Working with Lorraine has yielded tangible improvements in our relationship. We recommend her without reservation. Gilberto and Gabrielle.

As multiple trauma survivor, I saw my first therapist many moons ago and have experienced multiple treatment modalities and the gamut of personal styles amongst therapists. I could professionally review lots of them! I only say this so you can take my opinion with the utmost assurance that my time with Lindsay was among the most productive, her style was among the most likable, and the issues she tough loved me into facing were core for me as I have experienced. My only regret is our time was so short. I am now excited to be chasing my music career with a passion instead of feeling trapped in undesirable situations and fruitless relationships. Did Lindsay relieve me of all that? No. But she facilitated me doing it for myself. And that's the best therapist there is. Thanks for ya help, Lindsay, I couldn't have done it without ya! The Big Easy's loss is the Big Apple's gain, I know dats right! Peace Through Music ya'll, pianogoddess New Orleans

It has been an amazing journey. Brent is very smart and sensitive. He has always been present, and never pushed for any "not-ready-yet" process. The conversation can be really deep if you dare to explore; psychotherapy is about challenging yourself for inner awareness and change though, so I've gladly taken that. And most importantly --My words, feelings and emotions were always seen, heard and held (instead of being packed up and thrown away). The procedure of change is so painful and scary, and I've experienced a lot of disconnections before with other therapists, but this did not happen with Brent, and I take this as the most precious part of him. We struggled a little bit at the beginning for a schedule that worked for both of us, considering my REAL crazy working hours, but that's all I can think of (for a semi-complaint). The experience turns out to deserve all the efforts.

Wow, is this therapist and life coach special. She tuned into what I was saying immediately. What she said helped me immediately and built up my self-esteem and self-confidence. She gave me much needed social tools and ways to improve areas in my life where I still have difficulty. In addition, her office and waiting room are so beautiful. I immediately felt calm as soon as I entered her door. She is also so calm and reassuring that I felt relaxed from the very beginning.

Working with Alexandra was my first time dedicating myself to therapy. Like most people I was very apprehensive at first and wasn't really sure what to expect after hearing stories of therapists telling you what to do as if you are a child or just completely ignoring you while you talk to yourself about your issues. Let me just state the moment I was in Alexandra's office and our first meeting I was immediately put at ease and felt calm as she has such a lovely energy about her and such a soothing voice! Talking to her felt like I was talking to a really good friend who helped me sort out my issues so that they were not muddled together. Instead of "telling" me what to do we would go through each issues and if I felt stuck she would give suggestions or guidance to help me make my own decisions in a thoughtful clear headed way. The tools she gave me to sort my thoughts and relieve my anxiety through a year of therapy got me off my anxiety medication and I haven't had to go back on. I can not thank her enough for helping me find strength within myself to face everyday. There are still those hard days but they are nothing compared to what I used to feel before and now I have the tools.

Everything about Linda Towle is great. I got the feeling that she truly cared about what I was going through. I never felt rushed, she never looked at the time. She listened and really retained the information in order to really help and give you feedback. She had a great way of putting things in perspective. Made me feel extremely comfortable right from the very beginning. She was punctual and very helpful with having to fill out and mailing out insurance info. Her energy is great and I walked out of her office happy. I would recommend her to anyone needing a therapist.

I have been utilizing the services of Mr. Zhuta over the past five months and have been extremely satisfied with the experience. The decision to seek professional help was not an easy one, but from the first time we meet I felt reassured that I reached out to the right therapist based on his compassion towards me, professionalism and consideration for truly seeking to understand my individual needs. He has always been respectful of my feelings and yet not afraid to challenge my perceptions when needed. He has been very accommodating with scheduling and always available for questions or concerns that arise after hours. My time with Mr. Zhuta has provided me with the tools I need to set clear and realistic expectations and to to begin developing and executing on an action plan for achieving my desired outcomes in life. I consider him an true advocate in helping me on my journey and I would highly recommend his services.

For four years I wasted my time with two therapists from the same office. One therapist that held a PHD, told my wife that he couldn't "reach" me, I was too difficult for him. His approach was main stream. I stopped going to that office. I went without talk therapy for 3 years. Then through a referral from my wife's therapist, I met Steven. His approach and personality were unique. He recovered from the many of the same problems that I had 20 years before we met. He could identify with me, and I with him. That meant a lot to me. He not only talked the talk but he also had walked the walk. He wasted no time in finding out what my deficiencies and strong points were I experience constant improvement through his unique therapy methods in our sessions. The effects of his therapy have turned out to be cumulative. I no longer have the anxiety and angst and bad habits that I presented when I first came to him. I continue to see him and my growth has continued in a very positive way. I look forward to my visits and the positive changes that have emerged through his care..

My experience working with Nancy Hutter was quite great. I needed a therapist to help me while having some martial problems. Nancy has great insight into identifying problems and helped to point out to my husband and I what direction to follow and helped us set up achievable goals to work towards. Nancy taught us how to finally listen and communicate with one another. She saw the anger I was suppressing and worked with my husband and I to resolve openly and calmly many interpersonal issues we finally talked about with her. Nancy is a good listener, responsive, very patient and has a warm hear too. She understood that it was much easier for me to talk and open up than my husband and she was willing to give him the time he needed. Nancy always called back ASAP when I left a message for her which I really appreciated.

In the middle of my first therapy session with Pastor Tony I knew that I made the right choice. He seemed to understand my struggles completely. In fact, he finished a couple of my sentences. I knew right then and there that besides book knowledge, of which he has plenty, he also has heart knowledge. What I mean is, he counsels from the mind as well as the heart. You won't regret it if you choose him to be your therapist. When I reflect on my mental and emotional growth since I have been having sessions with him it fills me with pride that I have grown so much. The same thing will happen to you. Your days won't be so cloudy anymore. It will take work on his part as well as yours, but Pastor Tony will bring you into the sunshine.

I can't recommend this wonderful therapist enough! In 2010 my sons great grandfather passed away at Calvary Hospital after a month of being an in-patient. At that time my sons were 7 and 6 years old and their mental well being after their first family loss was at the top of my priority list. Insert Walesca aka "Wally" who had not only the skill set but the compassion to guide them through their grief. She taught them the skills they need to understand it's okay to feel sadness and just as importantly how to express it. They are now 15 and 14 years old and have suffered many other losses since and have been able to cope because of the skills Wally taught them. Whenever I mention her name a big smile comes across their faces. She truly made grief bearable for them and I am forever grateful to her.

Susan of Art Mends Hearts has developed a very creative and effective way of doing therapy which personally resulted in much healing and peace. She's intuitive and inciteful and shares these natural gifts she has with her clients. She's also has an innate forgiving and compassionate nature which becomes contagious. She'll tailor the sessions to meet her clients needs and discovers what works best for real results. For me it was journaling questions she would give me as my "homework" that I would read back to her. What was also incredibly helpful is her well thought out assessments of our sessions which she would email to me shortly after we met. Unlike a typical visit with a therapist, having something concrete in writing to fall back on and read again reinforces all she tries to accomplish. This woman deserves an A+ for her technique, compassion, intellect and the healing that results.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
