I would highly recommend Renegade Outpost to my colleagues, family, and friends. I planned a cocktail party and had a short lead time to coordinate food and beverages. I reached out to 4 potential chefs and Chef Ellen's response was very prompt. She concisely outlined my options and was able to put together a diverse, seasonal food and beverage menu that fit my budget. We were able to finalize the plans in 24 hours. Her team showed up the day of the event and quickly set up. All I had to do was provide a table and they took care of all the other details. Our menu consisted of 6 passed hors-d'oeuvres and an outdoor bar. The hors-d'oeuvres were hearty and flavorful, and each one was better than the next. Many of my guests commented on how much they enjoyed the food. When hosting a party, the last thing I want to do is worry about serving my guests food and drinks. Her team was friendly, professional, and provided excellent service. I would definitely hire Chef Ellen again.

Working with Marylyn Schwartz of Juste Hors D'Oeuvres was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL from beginning to end!!! I was searching for a caterer for my children's graduation party and had something very specific in mind because my three children were graduating from middle school, high school and college all at the same time. Therefore, the party needed to be appropriate for people of all ages, including older family and friends. As I am a perfectionist, and knew that I was going to have some VERY discerning guests at this party, I initially thought myself crazy to be looking for a caterer on the internet, but after one conversation with Marylyn I knew that she understood exactly what I wanted. Throughout the planning, Marylyn was the consummate professional, immediately picking up on what was important to me and handling everything with the utmost efficiency, even as I kept adding to the number of guests up until a week before the party! Juste Hors D'Oeuvres offers a VERY EXTENSIVE AND CREATIVE MENU, and with Marylyn's guidance I was able to choose a wide variety of pass-arounds, main dishes and desserts. On the day of the party, everything turned out PERFECT. The staff, from bartenders to wait staff, were professional, hardworking and friendly. And the food??? Marylyn brought FABULOUS Chef Neal with her and everything that the two of them cooked up was DELICIOUS AND BEAUTIFULLY PREPARED. Our guests raved about everything and even commented that the hot food came out HOT, as it should!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Marylyn, Chef Neal, and the staff of Juste Hors D'Oeuvres for making this a very memorable celebration for our family!!!!

When you hire Manjar you know your event is in excellent hands! Their exquisite taste and attention to details has made our "tight budgets" into a beautiful celebration of food, decor, and specialty mocktail & cocktails. His team treats each event as if you are part of their family. Over the last 7months, I have had the pleasure of working with their event team & chefs on at least 10 events, including new product launches, corporate, wedding, and celebratory events in NJ private estates, galleries, retail environments & nyc apartments. The guests rave about the service & food. At the most recent event, my client was very demanding, last minute, with specific dietary needs... Manjar surpassed my expectations. I would recommend them for any event from a french service sit-down dinner, graduation celebration, to a summer garden cocktail party. Trust them with what you need and you will not be disappointed! Great events, all of the details attended to, and great results so you can enjoy your own event!

We had a wonderful time at our group cooking class at La Pulperia. Chef Carlos and his team were so gracious (accommodating of food allergies) and the food was delicious - empanadas, salmon tartar, guacamole and ricotta gnocchi (which we learned how to make). We enjoyed making one of their signature cocktails and sipped wine (and tequila). Thanks to Chef Carlos and everyone at La Pulperia for such a fun and unique time. Also, thanks so much to Tyler for setting everything up!

Whether you are having a small get together for a few or a large gathering, be rest assured that your event will be amazing! Chef Michel is extremely professional, respectful, and friendly! He catered 2 events for our family and we were very pleased with both. The first was a party of nearly 100 people celebrating our son’s college graduation and daughter’s high school graduation. Our second event was a last minute post Thanksgiving weekend family get together for 12-15 people. Everything from the planning, to taste testing, and delivery was on point. Aside from the food being beyond mouth watering delicious, he coordinated with outside vendors to provide everything we needed to make the graduation event beautiful. He also provided on site chefs and wait staff, all of which were professional and attentive to details. They were flexible in their assigned roles and remained past the scheduled time to attend to our guests and clean up. Our home was left as clean as it was when they arrived! Chef Michel prides himself on delivering the best quality and freshest foods possible. Other than a few items that required pre-prep (like marinating / slow cooking...definitely try the roast pork and roast chicken) everything was prepared (cut, fried, cooked, assembled etc) on site. This truly makes a difference when you’re serving items like empanadas or tostones with avocado and shrimp (both highly recommended). Chef Michel is very creative. Whether you choose something from his printed menus, have other items in mind, or even have a special recipe that you want him to prepare...HE CAN DO IT! An important point to make about his catering style is that he is so proud of his creations that he wants everyone to be able to taste everything that he prepares. If you choose an appetizer and you have 100 people, you are not going to get 1 or 2 pieces per person or be charged by the piece, like most caterers. He will make sure you have more than enough for everyone. The same applies to your main course. We had leftovers for ourselves, even after our guests took food home. With all of this said, I truly feel that his prices are fair and reasonable! I could write more and would be more than happy to speak to anyone who has any questions, but I’ll end with...make sure you try his homemade ice creams (our favorites were coconut and pineapple), flan, and especially the sangria!

Chef Melissa taught a cooking class for myself and 4 friends. She was very fun and informed us on proper cutting technique. We had a lot of allergies/food restrictions and Melissa was very easy to work with regarding these. Her recipes were healthy and delicious! Our menu included Sweet Potato Fritattas, Cod w/ Mango Salsa, Baked breaded artichoke hearts and Almond Butter Cups. We had a great time and would highly recommend her!

When Chef Peter says he will "wow" you with his food and presentation, he doesn't disappoint. He suggested a creative, yet appropriate menu; presented a delectable dinner for 6; and left the kitchen in pristine order. If that weren't enough, it's a pleasure to work with this talented young man.

Tara is an outstanding chef! Her food is well thought out to suit the needs for your special event. It is delicious and artfully presented from her own recipes. Tara creates a one of a kind, personalized menu. She listens to what your desires are for your party and works with you to achieve a fabulous result! The food is well timed enabling your event to run smoothly and on time. She is gracious and more than willing to intermingle with your guests if that is your wish. Her staff is excellent and very well presented. The entire operations was flawless and extremely professional! I had a four course dinner party for ten people at my home. Tara paired wines for each course which were excellent choices. Everything was so fresh and exquisite! Tara and her staff left my kitchen immaculate with everything in its place. Each one of my guests is now raving about Tara Ciannella and her entire operation!

Fun and informative! I've been happily attending Stefan's Cooking with Chef Stef classes since its inception. The quality of the instruction is incredible. Chef supplies everything you need to prepare well planned, interesting and very tasty menus. You can eat right there in class or take your dishes home in provided to-go containers. Chef is obviously very passionate about cooking and sharing his amazing depth of knowledge. I can not recommend these classes more. (Frankly, dude needs his own cooking show - he'd be great). Enjoy!

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
