"I started training with Stefan over 6 years ago! At that time my motivation was to improve my overall health, strength, and weight loss. After a few weeks of training, I fractured my ankles and could not bear any weight. My improved fitness level allowed my to use crutches without bearing any weight on my legs. After about 1 week (while still in castes) I returned to training. Stefan, in collaboration with my health care team, developed a modified program for me. This in part allowed me to heal and recover much faster. Mentally, it gave me something else to focus on rather than my injuries. My doctors recommended that I go to physical therapy, which I did. After a couple of therapy sessions I quickly realized I was not getting the individual 1:1 attention and results that I was achieving with Stefan. Physical therapy offices tend to be over crowded and have a limited amount of equipment. I continued intensive training with Stefan and quickly recovered with full range of motion and strength in my legs. I have worked with Stefan to improve my chronic back pain and to maintain mobility. As a result, I have a decrease in discomfort due to increased spine and core strength as well as flexibility. Over the years I have maintained a vigorous training program and enjoy every minute of it. Stefan is an experienced trainer, who can modify fitness programs to meet your ever changing needs and physical challenges to achieve the best results possible! Not to mention, "Discipline" is an awesome, fully equipped, private training facility. As a health care professional, I highly recommend Stefan and Discipline!"

"I started getting massages from Nicky last spring to help with lower back problems and just overall tightness of the muscles that comes from spending my days sitting hunched over a computer. I have to say she is the BEST!!! After seeing at least a dozen different MT's over the last 4 years since moving to NJ, Nicky was the first person who I've wanted to keep going back to. And for the last 8 or 9 months I've been getting massages from her about once every 3 to 4 weeks with no plans to stop :) From the moment you meet her you discover she is an authentic, good natured spirit who loves what she does. It may sound crazy but when I meet people I always go with my gut reaction and what kind of 'vibes' I get from them, before I can put words to what I like/dislike about them. From the day I met her I have gotten nothing but good vibes from Nicky. She begins each massage with a quick 'grounding' to clear out whatever else in the world is going on, and brings you to the present moment to really enjoy and relax during your massage, without the standard mind racing that usually takes place for the first 20 mins of every massage I've received in the past. Whether I decide to silently enjoy the massage or chat with Nicky for all or part of the 90 mins, it's always a fantastic experience. I recommend to anyone looking for a great massage therapist, to schedule some time with Nicky. You will enjoy it like no other massage, that much I am certain! "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage is a therapeutic massage tailored specifically to the needs of a pregnant woman’s body. Before having a prenatal massage, always check in with your prenatal care provider and ask if massage therapy will be safe for you and your pregnancy. A pregnancy massage is much more than just an indulgence. The specialized strokes and techniques used to loosen tight muscles, reduce swelling, alleviate pressure, and ease tension provide positive health benefits for both you and your baby. Experts recommend finding a massage therapist who has received additional training on prenatal massage techniques. This is typically a certification above and beyond their standard massage therapy certification and training requirements. During the massage you will likely lie on your side or in a semi-reclined position; these supported poses keep you and the baby comfortable and free from strain or undue pressure. During the massage, the therapist will listen to what body challenges you are experiencing and work to release tension. The massage should be a relaxing and very soothing experience.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

Is Swedish massage safe during pregnancy?

As long as your prenatal care physician has cleared you for prenatal massage, it should be safe to indulge yourself in a Swedish massage during pregnancy. In fact, scheduling regular pregnancy massages can have wonderful health benefits for you and the baby. Swedish and other massages can feel great and also have a variety of health benefits, according to studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Some of the benefits of pregnancy massage include reduction in leg and back pain, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and a better overall mood.

To find the right massage therapist for you, read the therapist’s online reviews and call to ask them about their experience with prenatal massage. Massage therapists who have been specially trained in prenatal massage techniques often advertise this area of expertise on their websites. Don’t hesitate to ask questions beforehand, and to communicate during the massage about what does and does not feel good.

Can you have massages while pregnant?

Not only can you have a massage while pregnant, multiple scientific studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services demonstrate that pregnancy massages provide physical and mental benefits to pregnant women and women in labor. Always ask your OB-GYN about receiving massages before starting any massage therapy to make sure it is safe for your own pregnancy. Pregnancy massage can alleviate pain, improve mental health and feel great. According to the DHHS, the benefits can include:

  • Decreased depression.
  • Decreased anxiety.
  • Decreased leg and back pain.
  • Lower cortisol levels, which in turn lowers prematurity rates.
  • Lessened labor pain (for women who received massage during labor).
  • Labor time that is three hours shorter, on average, for women who receive massage during labor.
