Amazing! David is knowledgeable, lovely, generous, a true artist and we are so lucky to have found him. We are committed to studying with him long term. I'm sure it had nothing to do with you guys at thumbtack. I checked out two different voice teachers. David offered a complimentary consultation lesson, and the other charged supposedly a special price, not cheap, for having found him on thumbtack, for the consultation lesson, and then not clear about how much the actual lessons would coast, plus insisted on getting paid over the phone right away, and answer a ton of questions through some secretary, because he wasn't available. I opted for David, and made my appointed with him. Not complicated at all, a lovely apt. a lovely person, passionate, very knowledgeable and talented. I booked my next lesson happily, and plan on continuing with this voice teacher for at least a year. Singing is an art, and the voice coach should be represented with class, and should not be so cold and calculated, all about the money. With David I will thrive, and he will earn a new student, if not two.
I've been learning from Dom for a bit shy of two months now and have been loving every minute of it. While I'm a neophyte on guitar, my mother is a music teacher (guitar/piano/voice) and I grew up with vocal coaching at various levels, so I have experience with a variety of music training. I found Dom to be incredibly responsive; as other reviewers have touched on, he starts from the very beginning with vital information that I merely glossed over when self-teaching other instruments, but he will quickly amp up the pace of your lessons to your speed of learning. At this point, I leave each lesson feeling challenged, but I come into the next week with enough understanding to grow and meet the next batch. I'm also taking bass lessons with him once a month, and the sessions dovetail nicely into each other. He has a wealth of music history and experience at his disposal and you would do well to take advantage of that. Also, he has two of the sweetest cats I've come across in a while, so there's that.
I've always sung and I took lessons with top rated voice 'teachers', but they really weren't teachers; they were really coaches and stylists. Rae de la Cretaz is a true pedagogue. She is a teacher of rare abilities...a vocal genie if you're lucky enough to find her. Unlike, coaches, she will custom build your voice from the ground up. I thought I knew the basics, but I soon discovered after uttering one note in front of her, that I knew nothing. Here I had been focused on style, placement, phrasing...only to discover that I really had never even mastered how to really breathe, and that so much of singing is breath work. How so much of great singing is 'getting out of the way' of your natural voice. (Easier said than done). I also never realized how mentally challenging it is to learn to sing correctly. So, here's the deal. If you have a voice, you need to treasure it, and make sure you use it properly so it stays healthy all through your life. Rae will give you that. When you sing, she has her eyes closed, and can tell you exactly what you did in your body that hampered that perfect note. She knows where you were holding tension in your body, and she'll be right every time. Unlike many people who call themselves teachers, she doesn't just let you sing all the way through. She will stop you over and over and correct you until you're producing the right sound. She's tough, precise, and amazingly perceptive. You need to surrender your ego at the door, know that she is committed to your being the best you can be, and allow her to do her magic. Soon, you will be able to identify what you're doing wrong, and fix it yourself. But you must surrender to her teaching technique and have patience and faith. For that, you will be rewarded with a healthy rich voice that responds to your mind like a Porsche grips the road on a hairpin turn. If all you want to do is be told how great you are and sing songs through your whole session, Rae isn't for you. If you're passionate about being the best singer you can be, and you want vocal mastery, and you're eager to learn a powerful technique, then Rae is for you. Her teaching is universal, and you will be amazed how quickly you improve regardless of your repertoire. Classical, pop, rock, Broadway....it doesn't matter. Her methods are genre agnostic....Watch your range increase, watch how your notes float out of you as if they have a life of their own, watch how your resonance comes alive, learn to feel when it's right instead of listening for it. You will identify yourself as a 'singer' with confidence in the consistency, reliability, and health of your voice. Call her. She's also a very nice person, and easy to talk to. She's won't lavish you with gratuitous praise, but she gets very excited when you get something right. And you'll know it. One caveat: it took me two or three lessons to learn how gifted a teacher she is. That's because it took me a few lessons to surrender my ego at the door.
I started singing lessons with Chelsea about one month ago. Though I have a passion for music and singing, I have always been shy and nervous to sing in front of others. Chelsea has already made me feel more confident in my voice! Chelsea is so talented and incredibly professional. She listens to what my strengths are and enhances them, as well as grasps my weaknesses and works with me to make them stronger. I also appreciate how Chelsea’s lessons don’t just stop once you leave her studio. Chelsea writes “homework” to take with you, only further encouraging you to work on what was practiced in class. It is SO helpful! I am so happy I started lessons with Chelsea!
Thank you for a beautiful wedding! Ivan has an extensive repertoire and played everything perfectly. He was prompt and professional, and could easily charge much more given the quality of service he provides, but I'm grateful that he was affordable! It was nice that the music was one less thing to worry about on my wedding day. I can't recommend him enough.
I'be been a bass player for 30+ years and I recently decided I wanted to take my playing to a higher level. My musical theory / knowledge has never been as good as it should or could be. I started taking lessons with numerous "Bass guitar" teachers but they were more focused on technique and that's not where my skill set was lacking. I found David First on Thumbtack and since he was located close to where I live, I decided to try him as my teacher. Long story short, best musical decision I've made in a very long time... David isn't a "bass guitar" teacher per se', he's a MUSIC teacher and that's exactly what I needed. He's extremely competent in his knowledge of theory and he's a very patient teacher. He's got a very chill, Zen vibe about him which makes studying under him very easy and peaceful. I can already see a major improvement in my understanding of what to play, when to play it and why it works as a result of our lessons. If you're looking for a great music teacher, I highly recommend David First.
I used Michelle's service to get my 9 year old daughter a singing teacher and could not be more thrilled with the result!!
A lesson will Jimi is always life changing. Every time I walk out of a lesson with him I feel like my guitar playing has jumped tenfold. The best music teacher I've ever had!
Gregor is a wonderful violinist and a thoughtful musician. As someone who has worked with him on and off for years, I'm positive he'd bring the same qualities into his studio and pass his love of music on to his students.
Amazing teacher with a vast knowledge of jazz music. Highly recommended
Dave has been a wonderful teacher! I am a novice pianist and the lessons and homework assignments are tailored for my ability and progression. I never feel like I am being expected to do more than I am capable of. Dave is also a pleasant person to speak with, which is an added bonus, and extremely knowledgeable! I would recommend people of all ages and skill levels take lessons from him. Thank you Dave!
I've been taking guitar lessons with Chris for a few months now, and I can hear a clear difference in my playing. He is a great teacher, very patient and encouraging. As a fellow music teacher myself, I can say that his level of musicianship is very impressive. Chris is also very flexible with his scheduling, which is very helpful. I highly recommend him to everyone out there.
Great studio and great teachers. They provide a comfortable learning environment. On camera class with a working professional.
Viky is very friendly and a great teacher for both piano and singing. I highly recommend her.
Marlene is a highly patient, engaging, and caring teacher who always finds creative ways of teaching musical concepts and helping her students reach their goals. It has been a pleasure working with her!!
To whom it may concern, Marina Poplavskaya has changed my vocal journey, entirely. I had the fortune of meeting her at the age of seventeen, just before my auditions for the major conservatories in New York City. I came to her with a wide array of bad habits and faulty technique. As an instructor and as a person, she was a breath of fresh air. She was straight-forward, concise, and incredibly clear as well as passionate and involved. Working on my technique was only the beginning. She taught me how to approach learning a piece/role, how to analyze libretto, understand concepts behind music, and develop correct and consistent diction with French, German, and Italian. Every piece we worked on, we would go into depth. No rock was left unturned. She helped expand my palate for references and was always available to answer any major (or minor) questions or concerns. My confidence in her grew stronger after each successful lesson. It was the first time everything taught to me made sense and was applicable even in my personal practice after my lessons. After not professionally studying with a private teacher for almost two years, I came to her with only a few months to prepare for my auditions and what she did in those few months was extraordinary. I now study at Mannes School of Music and I got accepted thanks to all the effort Marina put in. She set the foundation for a strong technique that I am lucky to build on every day. The instructors in my music classes noticed the difference immediately. My breathing was steady and stable, my tone was pointed and focused, and I had developed enough muscle strength to express dynamics and re-attack each phrase, without losing steam. To add to an unfaltering technique, I was an informed singer. Marina encouraged and guided me to do a word by word translation of each text that I was to perform, as well as its precise diction, which helped me deliver the music in a much more connected and accurate way. Without her, I would be lost as an artist. She made me a better student, a better musician, and a much stronger and more confident vocalist. I will be forever grateful. Sincerely, Yuliya Maschenko Mannes School of Music Lyric Soprano
Robert is a great teacher for piano and very patient. Is interested in helping shape my lesson plan in line with my interests and abilities. Is flexible with scheduling as well. Would recommend to any potential students.
I found the search for classical guitar instruction rather daunting until I discovered the website of James Lorusso (jameslorusso.com). My initial contact from several other entities and individuals proved far too commercially driven for my taste. I was interested in taking formal lessons and learning how to read music not just learning from tablature or playing by ear which I had done for over fifty years. A few hours following my e-mail inquiry I was surprised and gratified to receive a personal call from Mr. Lorusso and was in his studio the very next day. I was immediately impressed with this gentleman. His warmth and finely honed pedagogic approach were so apparent it was only a matter of minutes into that introductory lesson I became convinced I had found the quintessential teacher a true pedagogue and a man of such talent and encyclopedic musical knowledge I was drawn to him like a magnet. Seldom in life does one come across a resource as substantial and charismatic as this gentleman look no further, you have just found a genius who's also as warm as the day is long! My name is Tom I'm 67 years of age and feel like a kid when I'm in Jims studio. In three months he has given me gifts of learning and brought me to places I thought were unachievable. He will do the same for you!
Dustin Kaufman is an incredible drum teacher. I am an adult who never played before and wanted to learn. I never thought I would be able to play beats and fills so quickly but Dustin in a few short lessons got me there and I am having so much fun learning from him and now actually being able to play whole songs! Dustin is an excellent musician and teacher, responsible and makes learning a lot of fun. I highly recommend Dustin Kaufman as a teacher to anyone who truly wants to learn to play and have a great time in the process.
To whom it may concern: Jacob Sayraf has been teaching my 10 year-old son Steven the guitar and vocals for over a year and a half now. He has been a wonderful teacher, and my son has made great progress under his tutelage. Before he met Jacob he didn't know how to play the guitar at all. Jacob is also sharing with Stevie a wealth of songs from a broad range of folk, country, rock, pop, and standards. Some of these include: "We'll Meet Again", "Bad Bad Leroy Brown", "Blue Moon of Kentucky", "House of the Rising Sun", "Blue Suede Shoes", "In My Life", "Hot Tamales and Theyr'e Red Hot", and "Don't Worry, Be Happy". Stevie is getting a sound musical education through Jacob. Jacob is doing a great job of not only teaching Stevie the guitar, but also the theory of music behind it. He gives Stevie homework, which Stevie dutifully does. Jacob also goes out of his way to borrow sheet music books from the library so he can lend them to Stevie. Most importantly, Stevie has a lot of fun with Jacob and always looks forward to his next lesson, which to me is a sign of a great teacher. I would definitely recommend Jacob for any teaching position you have. Sincerely, Jeffery Ringle
Matt has knowledge of, and an appreciation for ALL types of music. Of course this is difficult because he attended Stony Brook in the 60's and was exposed to the very best of Rock music. But he transcended that period, kept his high regards for Dylan and Jimi, and continued to grow as a musician and person. I've seem him at several jobs, and he reads the audience very well and makes the event a happy occasion for all.
