He's a very friendly and fun teacher. Knows what he's talking about, and is eager to help. His prices are also significantly cheaper than most voice teachers in NYC which helps a lot. I'm looking forward to working with him this month :)
I've always sung and I took lessons with top rated voice 'teachers', but they really weren't teachers; they were really coaches and stylists. Rae de la Cretaz is a true pedagogue. She is a teacher of rare abilities...a vocal genie if you're lucky enough to find her. Unlike, coaches, she will custom build your voice from the ground up. I thought I knew the basics, but I soon discovered after uttering one note in front of her, that I knew nothing. Here I had been focused on style, placement, phrasing...only to discover that I really had never even mastered how to really breathe, and that so much of singing is breath work. How so much of great singing is 'getting out of the way' of your natural voice. (Easier said than done). I also never realized how mentally challenging it is to learn to sing correctly. So, here's the deal. If you have a voice, you need to treasure it, and make sure you use it properly so it stays healthy all through your life. Rae will give you that. When you sing, she has her eyes closed, and can tell you exactly what you did in your body that hampered that perfect note. She knows where you were holding tension in your body, and she'll be right every time. Unlike many people who call themselves teachers, she doesn't just let you sing all the way through. She will stop you over and over and correct you until you're producing the right sound. She's tough, precise, and amazingly perceptive. You need to surrender your ego at the door, know that she is committed to your being the best you can be, and allow her to do her magic. Soon, you will be able to identify what you're doing wrong, and fix it yourself. But you must surrender to her teaching technique and have patience and faith. For that, you will be rewarded with a healthy rich voice that responds to your mind like a Porsche grips the road on a hairpin turn. If all you want to do is be told how great you are and sing songs through your whole session, Rae isn't for you. If you're passionate about being the best singer you can be, and you want vocal mastery, and you're eager to learn a powerful technique, then Rae is for you. Her teaching is universal, and you will be amazed how quickly you improve regardless of your repertoire. Classical, pop, rock, Broadway....it doesn't matter. Her methods are genre agnostic....Watch your range increase, watch how your notes float out of you as if they have a life of their own, watch how your resonance comes alive, learn to feel when it's right instead of listening for it. You will identify yourself as a 'singer' with confidence in the consistency, reliability, and health of your voice. Call her. She's also a very nice person, and easy to talk to. She's won't lavish you with gratuitous praise, but she gets very excited when you get something right. And you'll know it. One caveat: it took me two or three lessons to learn how gifted a teacher she is. That's because it took me a few lessons to surrender my ego at the door.
I've been learning from Dom for a bit shy of two months now and have been loving every minute of it. While I'm a neophyte on guitar, my mother is a music teacher (guitar/piano/voice) and I grew up with vocal coaching at various levels, so I have experience with a variety of music training. I found Dom to be incredibly responsive; as other reviewers have touched on, he starts from the very beginning with vital information that I merely glossed over when self-teaching other instruments, but he will quickly amp up the pace of your lessons to your speed of learning. At this point, I leave each lesson feeling challenged, but I come into the next week with enough understanding to grow and meet the next batch. I'm also taking bass lessons with him once a month, and the sessions dovetail nicely into each other. He has a wealth of music history and experience at his disposal and you would do well to take advantage of that. Also, he has two of the sweetest cats I've come across in a while, so there's that.
Mike Shapiro is one of the best teachers I have ever had, period -- and I've had a bunch of good ones in various academic subjects. He is an outstanding communicator, his teaching methods WORK, and he sincerely cares about his students' progress. Add to that that he's a great guy, and you get the highest rating. Oh, and his rates are affordable, too.
Thank you for a beautiful wedding! Ivan has an extensive repertoire and played everything perfectly. He was prompt and professional, and could easily charge much more given the quality of service he provides, but I'm grateful that he was affordable! It was nice that the music was one less thing to worry about on my wedding day. I can't recommend him enough.
I'be been a bass player for 30+ years and I recently decided I wanted to take my playing to a higher level. My musical theory / knowledge has never been as good as it should or could be. I started taking lessons with numerous "Bass guitar" teachers but they were more focused on technique and that's not where my skill set was lacking. I found David First on Thumbtack and since he was located close to where I live, I decided to try him as my teacher. Long story short, best musical decision I've made in a very long time... David isn't a "bass guitar" teacher per se', he's a MUSIC teacher and that's exactly what I needed. He's extremely competent in his knowledge of theory and he's a very patient teacher. He's got a very chill, Zen vibe about him which makes studying under him very easy and peaceful. I can already see a major improvement in my understanding of what to play, when to play it and why it works as a result of our lessons. If you're looking for a great music teacher, I highly recommend David First.
Mara has been teaching my ten-year-old daughter for about 10 months now. My daughter loves Mara's classes and looks forward to them all week. Mara is engaging and helps Isabella to focus. She does age-appropriate exercises with her to warm up and then to tone Isabella's voice. She is open to teaching songs that capture the interest of my daughter. She is flexible about scheduling and available at different hours of the day and even on weekends. She is prompt at responding to emails and texts. Mara is a pleasure to work with and my daughter absolutely adores her. I can't recommend Mara highly enough.
Rarely do I write reviews, but I felt strongly about this gem of a teacher that I found. Francis is knowledgeable, professional, and dedicated. As a piano teacher, he is patient, encouraging, and extremely caring. As a person, he is a character I admire—hard working, kind to those around him, and inspiring. His worldly and extensive training in music theory and in practice shows in his approach in teaching. I cannot convey in words how grateful I am to have found Francis. As an architect, I absolutely enjoy the challenge I get from learning to play the piano and using a different part of my brain, and I always look forward to our next lesson as my skills continue to improve with each lesson. This holiday, I will be playing several classic Christmas tunes that I've always hoped to learn to play. Thank you, Francis for everything! I look forward to continuing to learn from you and getting better!
Gary is a very knowledgable music teacher and talented musician. When I thought I was too old to learn to read music and play piano, Gary showed me that it's never too late. He has made studying music fun and easy. Also, with my busy schedule, his flexibility is super convenient. Highly recommend! 10/10 :)
I've had a few guitar teachers in the past, but Chris was absolutely my favorite. He was always supportive and encouraging towards helping me reach my goal, and he catered to what you wanted to learn. I myself am a big Taylor Swift fan, so once we got past all the basic chords and scales, he helped learn the chord progressions and finger picking to the songs that I chose. Chris has an incredible ear for music and he is a very talented guitarist. I would highly recommend his services, and he's also just an insanely cool guy.
I used Michelle's service to get my 9 year old daughter a singing teacher and could not be more thrilled with the result!!
Gregor is a wonderful violinist and a thoughtful musician. As someone who has worked with him on and off for years, I'm positive he'd bring the same qualities into his studio and pass his love of music on to his students.
Kino is my piano teacher. She's not just professional but really cares about students. I learn faster with her because she's patient to me. I enjoy her class a lot.
David takes his work extremely seriously. Some teachers teach people for a paycheck, but he teaches out of passion and genuine love for his craft. As a teacher, he doesn't just point out mistakes and say "practice more", he identifies the most effective practice methods to get you the most out of your practice time in ways that he's meticulously tested and optimized in an almost scientific approach, which I've never seen in the usual musical or creative type. He's even used these same methods to take on what he calls the "Hundred Piece Challenge", where he learned, memorized and uploaded YouTube videos of over a hundred different pieces of music in a single year, all while still teaching numerous students and living his life normally. That's basically a new piece every 3-4 days! Learning with a teacher isn't just about finding mistakes and playing them over and over again, with David it's about learning how to learn for yourself in the most effective way, and his approach is truly amazing.
Laury continues to be my daughter's voice teacher. Laury is a very supportive & knowledgeable teacher. She takes her time to make sure my daughter understands what she is teaching her. She points out when she is doing something wrong but will always end the lesson with a big emphasis on everything that was done right. I would strongly recommend Laury as a voice teacher!
The Saxophonist Matthew was excellent. Great music and professionalism.
Viky is very friendly and a great teacher for both piano and singing. I highly recommend her.
Marlene is a highly patient, engaging, and caring teacher who always finds creative ways of teaching musical concepts and helping her students reach their goals. It has been a pleasure working with her!!
Chris has been my guitar teacher for more than six years. First of all, the guy is basically a musical genius. He can play virtually anything after a few moments of listening. I have even asked him to figure out the guitar parts to obscure car commercials and he has done it with ease. More importantly, he's a truly genuine guy, amazingly patient and is able to impart his vast knowledge (he went to Berklee school of music) in a way that not only enables you to understand the instrument but to move ahead on your own. I can't recommend him more highly.
Michael is super technically knowledgeable and dedicated to teaching his students fundamental skills. He's also pleasant and easy to work with, and is super flexible with my schedule & helpful to me when it comes to buying equipment, selecting music to learn from, etc. I would recommend working with Michael.
Cantormum is caring, knowledgeable, talented and intuitive. She is able to tease out one's issues and challenges to singing and gives the person techniques and exercises to sensitize the person and teach him how to overcome them. She teaches singing using music the person loves and finds the pitches that are within the person's range to grow. My son leaves her lessons ready and motivated to practice what he's learned.
