David Tabatsky is one of those rare individuals in modern day publishing who consistently shines in all three of the industry's most fundamental criteria: writing, editing and administrative skills. He would be an asset to any organization seeking someone whose love of words is matched only by his proficiency at putting them together.

Dr. Mansur helped me achieve a goal that I thought was impossible. She was very responsive to all of my needs and questions. She met with me via Zoom to help answer any questions and to clear up any misunderstandings I had about my work. She never hesitated to answer a question and she was always positive and encouraged me to be the best that I could be. Dr. Mansur was also very knowledgeable about how to complete a dissertation and gave suggestions on what was needed to improve my writing. I would recommend anyone to give Dr Mansur an opportunity to make your dissertation writing less stressful and easier. Dr. Wintter Samuel

I used Professor Korn for assisting me with various writing assignments. He does great work and I received 90+ on all my assignments but his prices are a little expensive. I rated him good because his prices are high but his work is excellent. I would use again if he lowers his prices.

Jo Longley is the epitome of what workforce leaders consider a consummate professional. Although this is an often overused and cliche term, there is no more befitting way to describe her. Aside from the standard attributes employers expect from professional staff members, she brings the highest quality of thinking, performance, and drive to any project in which she is involved. I find that her communication skills (both written and orally) and her ability to conceptualize abstract concepts, far surpass many of my peers who bring years of experience to the table. This is an invaluable skill in the fields of marketing and advertising, where there exists a constant need to project human behavior and to develop messaging that morphs that behavior into action that yields client-directed results. Her client-focused writing is clever, stimulating and relevant to our wide-ranging target audiences. Her interoffice communications are succinct, and require little to no direction in their development. This greatly improves our firm's efficiency. With a professional sense that far exceeds her years, Ms. Logley is the most competent associate that I have had the pleasure of working with in years. She is intelligent, driven and responsible with her time to such a degree that she became an instant asset to our firm, and will be such to any other business or individual fortunate enough to be in a position to utilize her abilities. Danaya was a very good tutor. She helped me with my writing making it stronger, grammatically correct and legible for the reader to understand. She took her time with me, especially when I found myself getting frustrated, but her calming energy helped shift the mood as we found many different ways to help make the information easier for me to understand.

Max was a delight to work with. He tutored my son for 2 years when we were in Shanghai, China. Our son was in middle school at the time, (7th and 8th grade) and he needed help in getting organized and concentrating on his school work. I interviewed Max and selected him because of his warmth and engaging personality. He is also a writer and, at the time, our son was really into drama and creative writing so we thought that would inspire him. Max was so patient with our son who, at times, could be exasperating. Max would just roll with it and find a way to re-engage him. I don't think our son would have done as well as he did in school if it weren't for Max. Our whole family loved seeing Max, including our housekeeper who got a kick out of talking with Max in Mandarin. We highly recommend Max! He was sensitive to our son's moods and figured out how to motivate him, he was always punctual and very reliable.

Amanda works with my son who is in 6th grade. We live in Shanghai and he is really excited to work with her 3 times a week on English, history and his writing skills. They talk about books and she is great with improving his writing and grammar skills. She really goes for topics that excite him like sports and science. It's great to have a private teacher for my son he is going past grade level with this extra learning and practice each week.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
