I needed repair to fix my door frame. My door frame was quite damaged. As soon as I filled out the Thumbtack repair request form, Walter contacted me. It was a Sunday, that didn't deter Walter to come out not only to assess the damage, he repaired it that same day. he also gave us a great price which was tremendously lower than the other prices I was quoted. Walter is very kind and professional! I'm quite pleased with his excellent work! (See the before and after pics.) I would recommend Walter and his company to anyone!

We hired Marty to replace a damaged faucet, fix our capped pipping, repair damaged wood framing, and replace and patch the drywall in our master bedroom. All in a single day. He did an excellent and meticulous job on the bathroom, and the new faucet works great. The wall was closed up, and Marty even had time to take a look at our garage door opener, which had been malfunctioning for quite some time. The value you get for Marty's time is great. If you have any odds-and-ends around the house that need fixing, don't hesitate to give Marty Klein a try. You won't be disappointed.

I had a small repair of my stone steps outside my house. I had contacted him 6 months ago for a quote and then put the project on hold. When I finally decided to go ahead with the project, he honored the original quote and the job was done that week. Looks great!

Don was very knowledgeable on what needed to be done on the 2 windows in my room & the living room. The job he did was perfect I am so pleased with the end result you can't tell where all the damage was done after he finished the work. The price he charge was way below what I thought I would have to pay for the repairs! He always cleaned up after he finished doing something. I would highly recommend him on his work he has done. Very professional work ethics!!!

Nelson came to help me even though it was a last min late day call. He and his partner came and repaired all the electrical problems around my house including the hard-to-reach high up wall areas. Rome and his guys were great. We originally planned on only doing a couple things, and after seeing the quality of the work on stair repair and popcorn removal, we also had hardwood flooring installed, drywall replaced and tiling done. The work Johnny, Reuben, Jesus and the other guys did was beautiful and the prices Rome gave us were very reasonable. I would recommend him and his guys to anyone looking to get professional quality work done to their home.

Stenio and Marcelo were by far the best contractors I have hired. Great quality workmanship, courteous, and always on time. They estimated the work finished at approx 5 days, but worked long to finish a day before that to get my home in order for the thanksgiving holiday. Before I forget and their prices are very reasonable.

The job was a simple one, i.e., hanging & rehanging large framed artwork, pushing the cap of a hanging light fixture back onto the ceiling. Eswin Ra arrived on time accompanied by his cousin who functioned as an assistant who helped carry things & hand over the hammer, tape measure, etc. he did no actual work. Eswin was pleasant, careful & professional & appeared to know how to handle much more complicated handiwork. The reason I gave a 4 star review instead of a 5 was the final price. It's possible that I read the description of his work/charges in-correctly but I THOUGHT I would be charged $45 an hour. When I started going through my wallet, I was told that the price was $45 PER PERSON. I wound up paying $135 for 90 minutes of picture hanging which I thought was an inappropriately expensive amount. When I take my car in for repairs, I pay ONE labor charge per hour ($50 for example) - I DON'T pay $50 an hour for every mechanic who worked on my car. I have no complaints about Mr. Ra himself or the quality of his work but I do feel that the description of his charges was misleading & wound up costing me more than I was expecting to pay.

From the very beginning, Liberty Contractors have been incredibly awesome! I contacted them through Thumbtack.com to do a roof repair on my mother-in-law's house, that was on the market for sale. Carrie made sure that all the details were taken care of in order to get me the quote I needed. Robert went out to my location, worked up a quote, and got it to me quickly. The quote was totally doable, so we arranged for the work to be done, but I was leaving on vacation! Carrie and I communicated all the details, so as to have a representative of mine, the future owner of the home, be available at the time the work had to be done. Everything went as scheduled. The work was completed, I was on the beach on vacation, and my representative was completely happy with the work done. After the job was completed, Carrie touched base with me to make sure all was to my satisfaction! I couldn't be happier! I would recommend Liberty Contractors for anyone needing a quality job now or in the future!

Luis and his crew will be with us for as long as we have our house and beyond! They are amazing! Everything we have asked of them has been exceptional. Their work is excellent and there isn't anything that was asked to be repaired or installed that was not of the highest quality. We have recommended them to all of our friends and family who were so impressed with their work as well.

Kevin structurally fixed the framing in my 1925 farmhouse, reinsulated it (it had tarpaper insulation), raised the ceilings upstairs (his idea since there was only a small crawlspace there), re-roofed part of my house and several outbuildings, installed several vintage windows, rebuilt my interior stairs, structurally improved my basement, built several cedar closets, and improved my bathroom layout. He completed everything from demolition to framing to insulation and drywall/taping to painting. He also built a 4th stall in my horse barn in an atypical space. Kevin worked on my house/barn/outbuildings/roofs periodically over two years and improved/built/fixed everything wonderfully, from small details to new roofs to large framing corrections from what the original builders had done in 1925. He worked closely with me in the decision-making process, often providing me with ideas and improvements that had not occurred to me that resulted in a beautiful and functional living space far exceeding my expectations. Kevin was very cost-effective in his material choices – often re-using original 1925 materials that produced a period effect that also happened to be gorgeous. He was more than fair in his pricing, and I liked how he had me control the purchase/payment of materials directly so that I managed material costs and could transparently see what I was paying for without worrying about hidden costs or mark-ups. I have worked with several carpenters over time, and Kevin was far superior to any of them in his knowledge, experience, ideas and overall professionalism. He kept the job site very clean as I continued to live in my home while work went on, and he always made it as easy and comfortable as possible given the large scale of some remodel phases. Kevin has many sourcing resources - for example, I found a pair of vintage windows that were also energy efficient in a small store I hadn't heard of that really brought my dining room together. Kevin built a horse stall in my barn in the side section with a low, slanted roof. He made several adjustments to the ceiling before closing it in so that my horse had more head room. He had to create a 4th wall that was strong enough to stand up to a horse’s antics, which he partially did by creating a pocket door to add reinforcement. He was well versed with the safety requirements of horses, and my horse loves her new home. You can see several pictures of the stall on his website, hitthepin.com Kevin built several windows in the barn both for ventilation and so that my horses could see out, and he also fixed interior and exterior barn doors that were in need of facelifts to make them safe again. Kevin replaced the flat section of roof on my house (from an addition), thereby also fixing a leak around my chimney that four other roofing specialists had failed to correct. No more leak now! He also performed work on several of my farm outbuildings, from roofs, to gutters, to seating on an elevated deck. In summary, I found Kevin to be the ultimate professional and an innovative craftsman. His creativity and artistry add another dimension to his carpentry skills, which is a true benefit for his customers. I recommend Kevin and Hit the Pin to anyone who seeks a multi-faceted, talented artisan who works very hard, efficiently, courteously and cost-effectively.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
