Walter came in as a last minute save the day contractor. He is a general contractor licensed and insured and came to fix mistakes of another contractor and fix my faucets install. He ended up doing an amazing job and added a sealer to my carrera marble vanity. I am using him again for my next project. He does what he says he will, sticks to price and exceeds expectations. NICE GUY overall. Don't look further!

Ultimately, I decided to hire Marty after receiving quotes from other contractors to install a new hood vent that would also required some duct work as well. The main reason why we decided to go with him is because he took the time during the estimation process and tried to look for other solutions whereas another contractor that came said it should only be done one way. In addition to that, Marty always answered my questions in a very timely fashion which is always a big plus for me and even though there was a little additional damage to my roof while he was installing my hood vent, he didn't change the original price from what he quoted which shows a great deal in my book. We have plans to do more with this kitchen and Marty is going to be our GoTo guy going forward. He did a great job, and although it took a little while, it was done right and thats more than i can ask for. Highly recommend him.

Rome did extensive indoor and outdoor painting work for us in AZ at three different residences that we owned between 2008 and 2014. He also assisted us with interior trim repair/replacement, fence repair and several other projects related to the appearance of our homes. In every instance we found his work to be of the highest quality, and his prices were very competitive. He also has a high level of personal integrity and fairness which sets him apart from many contractors in todays environment. One example of this is that my wife and I always provided Rome with a key to our house, trusting him to start or stop each days work and lock up, even if we were not around at the end of the day. He is a detail orientated perfectionist when it comes to his paint work and I can recommend him without any resrvation to anyone looking for the highest quality of paint, plaster or woodwork.

5 Stars are not enough for this contractor. Eric answered every question Marilyn and I asked during the two intensive remodeling conferences we had prior to hire. He made suggestions, measured, measured again, thought before he answered, and didn't give us a price off the top of his head. We were interested in his approach, his prior experience, his honesty and integrity. After all, if we were giving him permission to work in our home. Eric installed a new high end kitchen that delights my wife every time she opens a cabinet. Pleasing, efficient, well designed and laid out is the finish we received. We got more value than we paid for. Finally found a general contractor who stayed on the job every scheduled day until our work was totally completed. Once we saw Eric's experience in progress, we booked more work-- over 700 feet of new flooring, trim work, utility room to guest bedroom transformation, fan installation, duct work, sheet rocking, taping, painting, handyman type items. I can't say enough good things about Eric and his craftsmanship, honesty, and sincerity of performance. Interview him last. Whatever you pay, i assure you he is worth it and fair. Feel free to call me at 845-492-0261. I am a NYS Licensed Real Estate Broker and will be recommending Eric to my clients when they need a go to contractor with a varied skill set in all phases of remodeling and general contracting. Marco came today to do our backsplash for a kitchen remodel. Wow - what a job! He and his partner came on time, were very clean and organized, and did a really wonderful job. I have done many renovations in our house and most contractors I would not have back - Marco is one that I would have back and am happy to endorse his work. Thanks for a great job!

JCEC contractors (http://www.jcecpainting.com/about.html) and painting company do more than just paint a room they actually transform a room. My wife has been watching all of the DIY shows on television and came up with an idea on changes she wanted to make to the kitchen. From her idea to completion, the transformation was amazing. We did not have to contract out to many different sub-contractors the team at JCEC did it all including electrical, tile work, woodwork and yes painting. I would strongly recommend them to anyone who is looking for someone who can do it all and at a good price.

The reason we all use Thumbtack is to find excellent, reasonably-priced contractors who show up and complete work as promised. That's exactly who these guys are. And they're extremely nice and easy to work with as well. I sent them photos of my deck and after a little research, asked them to use the Behr deck stain from Home Depot which Consumer Reports says is the best available and only $29 per can. They power washed my deck and some patio furniture as well, light sanded and prepped the wood, including by using Bondo where some wood had rotted on posts, and they showed up and completed the job exactly as promised for a very fair price. Their work was perfect. I even paid them a little extra for power washing my teak deck furniture. Great, professional contractors. What more can you ask for?

This was my second time using thumbtack to hire a house cleaner. The first company I hired I wasn’t impressed and was discouraged. I gave it a shot and hired her and I am VERY satisfied! She came in and asked questions making sure she hit all the areas I wanted deep cleaned. She left my walls, floors and house looking spotless and smelling pleasant! I like the job she has done sooo much that I have hired her permanently. I’m looking forward to the days she cleans my home!

This was my first experience working with Thumbtack and For U Builders. I have a small house, and in the past, many contractors have simply not returned my calls because the job was considered "too small to bother." For U Builders installed 2 new custom exterior doors on my home. From the very beginning, Brandon (scheduling) and John (owner) were very communicative -- we had to schedule around the door delivery, and they were able to fit in my project as soon as the last door arrived. Stephen (Carpenter) is amazing! He made it look so easy and was attentive to every detail -- my house was built in the 1930s, so adjustments were necessary to make everything fit. When the job was finished, there wasn't a trace of dust or debris anywhere! I am very, very happy with the results, and will definitely work with For U Builders in the future. The entire team are professional, friendly, efficient and a joy to work with! Thank you!

I worked with Bharti for the design of my personal executive office space.  We agreed on a flat fee rate, which I found to be desirable so that I could include the fee in the budget and not be surprised at the end.  Bharti visited the space, received input on my ideas and tastes, and then created a visual plan with suggested colors, furniture placement, window treatments, etc.  Her initial plan was right on and she made recommendations that were consistent with what I liked, but also offered things that I had not thought of, which is what you hope for in using a designer.  Bharti also arranged for contractors to complete painting, etc. and was helpful in moving the project along.  She is delightful to work with, thorough, professional, and goes above and beyond in seeing the project to completion. When my wife saw the office, she couldn’t believe the transformation; it is very warm and inviting. We were so pleased with Bharti, we have asked her to design some rooms at our home as well. I enthusiastically recommend Bharti for your interior design needs!

My wife and I fell in love with large format porcelain plank tiles (8x47). Claude was the 4th contractor to look at the job, and the 1st who agreed to work with tiles that size. He is extremely busy with jobs, so be patient, but very much worth the wait. The tile looks great. Size of the job was roughly 200 sq ft. A big thank you to Claude and his guys.

We had the pleasure of working with Mark Troiano from CJT Development to build our custom new house. He is everything you would want in your contractor. He made great suggestions and helped keep us stay within our budget. When we met with him to go over out blueprints he came back with ways we could save money and not lose the integrity of our dream home. He did an amazing job sticking to the time table that we discussed previous to starting our build. Mark does an amazing job of explaining the process of everything and stayed in constant contact with us throughout the entire project. He was always available to answer our questions whether it be in person, on the phone, text or email. Mark was always willing to help out where ever it was needed. He is hard working and honest and works with quality subcontractors. Our house came out beautiful and the quality is amazing. I would highly recommend Mark to do any project, and would hire him again in the Here is a link to our home on Houzz http://www.houzz.com/projects/1482269

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
