Introduction: I specialize in teaching math to adults returning to college. I specifically teach upper-level math, especially precalculus,calculus, statistics, linear algebra and differential equations. I have taught math in the classroom at the college level for many years, but I have always preferred to one-on-one personal mentoring of students and small groups. I have coached thousands of students, young and old, over the years to maximize their performance in math courses, learn what was necessary, and feel good about their accomplishment. I choose to work primarily with adult students because as adults we have different learning needs. Adults have varied learning backgrounds that may not be consistent with the typical student. Adults may have learned some things but not other things that were taught to the other students. Adults have a lot on their mind. It may take longer to process things, but adults show up on time, do their homework, and are solution oriented. Tutoring is most beneficial to adults students because we get right down to the important stuff (unique to each student) without wasting time. As adults, time is a valuable resource. I participated in the writing of a study guide for Calculus by James Stewart, one of the most widely used calculus and pre-calculus textbooks in colleges today. In addition to this text, I have recently worked closely with students taking courses at Yale, MIT, NYU, Rutgers, Fordham, Notre Dame, SMU, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Buffalo, RPI, University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, University of Michigan, Marist, Vassar, Mount Saint Mary, and numerous community colleges. There have been many other colleges over the years, and I feel highly confident that I could help anyone taking calculus, statistics, pre-calculus, geometry, differential equations, linear algebra, proofs, algebra or nearly any college or high school math course. I am very familiar with the current Regents exam requirements for New York State, and have been helping students pass the Regents for literally decades. (I know that makes me old, I'm really not that old!) When I meet with students, I enjoy being a part of their journey through the course. I love that I make a difference! I help students using Zoom conferencing. I know that we all know about Zoom in light of current events, but not all Zoom meetings are the same. I have been using Zoom to teach online for quite a few years because there has been a demand for qualified statistics teachers that isn’t met at most local levels. I have taken hundreds of students though college statistics programs across the country. I have helped failing students and students who thought they were hopeless. I do this as my full-time job. There is a certain kind of experience gained from working with individuals that gives me insight into learning that classroom teachers don’t have time to explore. Very few tutors will have the experience I have. I know most college statistics courses inside and out. We can jump right in and get down to business with very little wasted time and energy. With a Zoom conference, each session is a focused, intensive, productive learning session. There is no distraction. I have learned how to share ideas and make students be accountable for information by discussing ideas verbally. This is an often overlooked skill.
