I took piano lessons from Gary for years and his program is fantastic. I learned to play the piano through songs that I loved, which made me want to continue with lessons as a kid. I am in college now and I still play the piano. Also, his rockonamerica program was a wonderful experience. I got to play rock music in a band with other kids my age. It was way cooler than any piano recital. I would definitely recommend taking music lessons with Gary; his lessons were a lot of fun and years later I still retain what I learned.

My husband James and I had the privilege of having Spencer and Sequoia perform at our wedding at a winery in Virginia this summer. It would be a huge understatement to say we were SO pleased with how everything went!!! Spencer and Sequoia were amazingly professional and joyful to work with and super gracious with everything. It was the first time I had worked with a band of any kind so from the second we signed a contract, they were extremely responsive of our needs and questions, provided a very lengthy and diverse song list and even said they would be willing to learn song requests for a nominal fee. Because they're based out of New York, they had to make the long drive the morning of and were totally on board to work with our tomeline and the venue set up. They were also super self sufficient so we didn't have to worry about providing them equipment as they assured us they had everything they needed and required little set up time which proved to be true. We had them perform during our ceremony, cocktail hour AND reception but they did it like champs and our guests could not stop raving about how great they sounded! Not only were they just downright talented, they were a pleasure to have around as well. At one point, my nephew who sung a song for us was experiencing technical difficulties with his sound system so Spencer right away let him use his, which was a total lifesaver. Bottom line- customer service is beyond amazing with this lovely husband wife pair and we are so happy and grateful we could have them be a part of our special day. THANK YOU Spencer & Sequoia!

We hired a DJ from Back to Back for a surprise 40th birthday party - and Greig was fantastic. He got there early, played everything on our play list, and had everyone dancing! The birthday girl is NOT a dancer, and even she got up - ! It was so nice not to have to 'watch' the DJ (which we had to do in the past). I could relax and enjoy our guests. When it came time for folks to say a few words, he was a great emcee. We were really happy with Back to Back and will use them again. Highly recommended!

My daugher took piano lessons from Gab Kallay before moving to Germany and really enjoyed taking lessons from her. Gab was very patient but also extremely thorough with the lessons. In Germany my daughter later joined the school band and continues to play.

Alex is a great teacher who helped me become a better and more confident drummer. I've played guitar and bass in bands in the past, but I wanted to branch out and learn drums to form a new band so I sought out Alex for lessons. He has really helped me understand the concepts I need to progress as a drummer. Been getting my chops up and hope to get the band gigging soon.

Alexis Cole brought her band to perform at a large Corporate Farmers Market that I produced. Her singing and presence added another dimension to the event and I received many compliments on her behalf. I will hire her again. She was completely flexible, working before hand with the AV team on site to organize the sound. Alexis Cole is always a delight to work with.

I've seen the Pleasers perform several times in the last year after hearing rave reviews from my friends about this awesome dance band, and what can I say, they were so right! These guys have such a soulful feel-good vibe and they really get the crowd moving all the while looking super fly and throw-back. My boyfriend and I live in Hudson but we made a special trip down to dance all night at their Valentines show at BSP in Kingston, it was our sweetest Vday so far. I only wish they'd play more In Hudson!! Aaaaand get me some CD's ;) Otherwise we were thoroughly Pleased!!!

Lyghtin Up and their catalog of classic rock songs are unmatched by any tribute band out there. The singer had me believing I was listening to the actual band! Would hire again and definitely recommend for your musical gatherings.

Randy came highly recommended from a friend. We have used him for my husband's 40th, a Christmas party and a few corporate events. He and his groups are extremely talented and even play different kinds of music. I will continue to hire him whenever I need a band!

My experience with Lisa Nelson and Class A Music has been an awesome and professional experience. Class A Music has provided the audio for our Women's Prayer Breakfast for the last four years. The setup required full audio (microphones, stands, amplifiers, speakers etc..) from 7am-1pm in the ball room at the Marriott hotel in Tarrytown, New York. Lisa Nelson and Class A Music always arrived early and would have everything set-up in the ball room early. Every year there was a different set-up and different ball rooms we would use, and there was never a problem. The quality of the sound was great. Lisa and Class A Music made sure they met all of our needs for our event. I feel Lisa Nelson and Class A Music do a great job. I would definitely use them for our next event and recommend them to others.

Bob Stump and the Road Side Attraction performed for my bridal shower. I was little hesitant because I thought it may not be the right style of music for our "english tea party" inspired bridal shower, but BOY WAS I WRONG! They were FANTASTIC and fit right in with the girls. They are true professionals and their love for music radiates in their performance. They played songs fit for the occasion but with their spin on it making for a creative and unique sound. It couldn't have been better and hiring them was the best decision. I'd hire them again in a heart beat.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
