WOW! is what I am going to say. Brian was at my house checking out my deck problem within 2 hours of me initiating a Thumbtack request. He and his work associate talked over the issues clearly with me, told me of their plan and it only came in a little over their estimate due to lots of extra work which I ok'd. The very next day they were here at 8:45 AM fixing my deck. Not only did they secure more boards than I had originally thought needed it, they were underneath that deck putting in supports and using a better quality screw than was in there to begin with. After they finished, they walked the entire deck to double and yes, triple check for any loosening boards. After they were sure there were none they declared the job finished. Brian is polite, considerate and easy to talk to. I will definitely call Brian for my next home repair need.

We had Nick do some repair work to our bathroom, he was professional, and timely. He got all the work done quickly, explained everything he was doing to us and once he was done he cleaned everything up. I will definitely hire him again for any plumbing repair I might have in the future.

I originally hired Justin to repair a damaged stair structure outside my house and also to tear out and replace some exterior carpeting. He did an excellent job - his work is very sound and I feel confident it will last for years. He did tear out the carpeting, but then advised me that he thought it would be best not to replace it, and explained why. After discussion I agreed. I appreciated that he was willling to tell me that it may not be in my best interests to do something I was prepared to have him do. Subsequent to the staircase work, I also hired Justin to clean my exterior and interior windows, and he also cleaned the window tracks. He did a great job - the windows are very clean and absolutely streak free. This work was a pain in the neck because recent construction on the house has created a lot of dirt and debris, especially in the window tracks, but Justin was very thorough. I will definitely keep Justin in mind for future work. He is reliable, prompt, honest, and thinks creatively about how to solve problems.

Thomas Renovations repaired my house after a tree fell on it and did quite a bit of damage. He did roof, siding, gutter and window repair. The house looks better than new, the work was outstanding and Jeff is excellent to work with. Not only that, but his pricing was more than reasonable. I highly recommend him to anyone.

For the 1st time in 18 years, I put my car in the garage! Mr. Reid and his team arrived 10 minutes before the scheduled time and promptly began the job of cleaning out my detached garage. When I moved into my home in 2000, I never took the time to clear out the belongings of the previous family. Instead, I shoved my stuff in the garage on top of theirs. Mr. Clean All to the rescue. In 2 hours, 50 years worth of STUFF in my garage was cleared out and organized. Hughan was super patient with me (and my occasional indecision) about what to keep and what to toss. I have never seen the garage look as good as it does today. I am beyond pleased with the job done and highly recommend this business. So pleased, in fact, I have asked him to work on a second home project for me. Do yourself a favor...hire Mr. CleanAll!

Matt responded within minutes of my Thumbtack request. He traveled a long distance just to give me an estimate to hard-wire my portable generator to my panel box- Matt's estimate was 1/3 of the big company's estimate-so it was a no brainer. Matt's professionalism and knowledge were impressive to say the least-during the estimate for the generator job- I lost power to a single circut and on the day he was to to the generator job- he also fixed my home circut issue as well - did both jobs in a couple hours- Matt works for a big electric company during the week and was eager to complete my job on the weekend- which worked out perfect for us. Cannot say enough about Matt's flexibility, communication, professionalism and performance- would highly recommend him !!

Dave has recently done a variety of jobs in my house as I prepare to potentially place it on the job market. It included everything from painting hallways, and bedrooms, to installing light fixtures, lineoleum, and wood trim/molding. I have known Dave as an outstanding student leader at RIT, and also as Manager of Taylor Rental. He is easy to talk with, takes good notes, and has the technical experience to the jobs for which he commits, and commits only to those jobs he can do. Unlike some handymen that I have had in the past, he shows up! And he is on time. Moreover, while Dave may be new to the Handyman profession, he is not new to the exprience of extended home repairs, as evidenced in the beautiful home where he and his family live, done mostly by Dave's renovation skills. Not only is he skilled, but he has the right tools and equipment to do the job properly; if - when working on a job - he sees a repair that needs to be addressed, or some instructions that are counterintuitive....he stops, (calls if need be), texts, or asks. He can juggle multiple tasks: for example, working on a repair, while waiting for the paint to dry. His estimates are pretty accurate - and if not, he lets you know as soon as they come to light. At the end of each day, Dave cleans up and neatly puts equipment and supplies away. Finally, he is trustworthy. My projects required an extended time, and I work during the day. I gave the key to my house and he would let him self in, and out as required each day. I strongly recommend him.

My experience with All-Pro was beyond what I expected. From first contact, to a fair quote and finished job. He was there helping me, explaining in detail what the job entailed and recommending the best materials. My shower tile surround was done beautifully. So efficient, professional and fair! All-Pro is that rare treat of finding a company that does "do it all". This company is a Go To for all home owners.

Brian's work is excellent and he and Larry did everything to accommodate my time frame. The fans look and function great! Brian is also VERY trustworthy, as I left him alone for several hours in my home while I ran errands. The job did take a little longer than projected but Brian was very reasonable as far as the price and was still less expensive than any other electrician I had contacted, even with him going over the projected time frame. I would definitely recommend BRL and I will be using them again in the future! Thanks Larry and Brian.

Gary always was at my home when he said he would be and worked around or schedule, days-evenings-weekends. We already had our tiles but Gary made suggestions to help make the design better based on his experiences. The results were beyond my expectations! I couldn't be happier with him or his work! Thank you.

You will not be disappointed. The level of professionalism and commitment is rarely found at Roberts high level. He completed a near impossible deadline basement remodeling in time for wedding guests and the results were beyond impressive. I found Robert to be insightful almost never having to be instructed. A true Craftsman in every sense of the word.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
