Helio did a bunch of odd jobs around my house, including: painting my porch, fixing and painting the railings on my porch and my indoor staircase, installing a new basement window, cleaning out the gutters, installing blinds, and installing a new handle on my sliding glass door. I was especially pleased that he was able to find two matching spindles for my indoor staircase (kids broke through the old ones.) The railing looks great. I found Mr. Guzman to be efficient and knowledgeable and very trustworthy, and I highly recommend his services.

Thomas Renovations repaired my house after a tree fell on it and did quite a bit of damage. He did roof, siding, gutter and window repair. The house looks better than new, the work was outstanding and Jeff is excellent to work with. Not only that, but his pricing was more than reasonable. I highly recommend him to anyone.

Luke was friendly, personable and efficient. His price is fair and he went beyond gutter cleaning to secure a portion of gutter that was detaching from the house. I did have to clean off some debris from the siding and window sills (which he may not have been aware of). I would definitely recommend Luke to others for their projects.

We required a full roof replacement for our home and Scott was able to keep his price competitive with two other offers we had received. He was always very kind and professional and never pushed us to make an impulsive buy, as we had typically felt with our other offers. He gave us very detailed and itemized estimates and was clear on what was and what was not covered. He was able to keep our entire project within the estimated time frame given. Whenever there was an issue or extra unexpected cost he was very open and clear before continuing. We have highly recommended him to our family and friends for future work.

From the moment Randy came out, he was timely, thorough and professional. He communicated with us from day one. He provided us with an estimate in a timely manner and completed the work (roof repair and siding replacement) beautifully within a short period of time. His crew was friendly and professional as well. The thing that I liked best, he was patient, not afraid to answer questions I had (and being new to this, I had a lot of them) as well as offering solutions for any issues presented. I would recommend Barnum Home Pros as well as contracting them for future projects at my home.

BlueJay did an awesome job with a quick but thorough install of the whole house worth of windows, a sliding glass door, and a specialty window. Was also quick to point out and take care of some unexpected rot found during removal of old door. I would gladly recommend using them to any friends and family!

Doug was outstanding, he showed up as agreed upon, made sure the work was satisfactory, and even replaced a broken piece of siding on my home not included in the quote. I was very satisfied with the work performed.

Installed a new glass patio door including taking out the old one. Jimmy may not always be exactly on time every time, but if running late he will update you, and he will complete the job well even if takes longer than he thought and he will make sure it looks right. He had to come back a second day due to scheduling conflicts, but he came back and finished the job even after he had the money for the job. I recommend him and would use him again, and in fact intend to for another job soon replacing the gutters.

We had our first floor renovated with new ceilings and drywall, in addition to replacement windows and doors. Josh is probably one of the hardest workers we have ever hired into our home. He was accommodating in scheduling and put in long hours to ensure that the completion of our project was done in a timely manner. As he left our home each day, he was conscious about cleaning up so that our living was as uninterrupted as possible. As our project completion approached, Josh sought our feedback on every aspect of the project and returned several times to ensure that everything was completed to our satisfaction. Additionally, we appreciated his suggestions as we planned and fine tuned our project. He was able to provide insight into the design and finishes that enhanced the finished look of it. We highly recommend Josh's company and will definitely be seeking his service as future projects arise.

I called Steve Caudle, owner of Cedar Mills Home Renovations, originally to fix some siding on my garage that was damaged. He came out promptly, gave me a reasonable estimate that we agreed on and, subject to weather conditions, scheduled a time window when he would do the repair. Subsequently, the winter worsened, we got 3 feet of snow, which caused a delay in the siding repair. As the winter began to thaw I experienced major ice damming on the roof over my living room which caused an inside leak and water damage to my drywall. Since this was an emergency situation Steve took on this unscheduled job right away. He literally had to rebuild my entire inside living room wall down to the studs. While this repair was happening I also hired them for some other projects, such as replacing floor tiles, replacing and re-piping a basement sump pump, redoing skylight seals and flashing, and a few other projects. All the work was done at reasonable cost. Once the weather improved Cedar Mills fixed the siding over my garage, which was the original scope of work. To make a long story short, Steve and the Cedar Mills team did an absolutely spectacular job. Completely courteous and professional at all times, and the quality of their workmanship was hands down some of the best I have ever seen from a home remodeling and repair contractor in the Rochester area. Cedar Mills gets the highest possible rating from me. I will definitely hire Steve and his team in the future! If you are looking for a professional, smart, honest, skilled and motivated team for home remodeling in the Rochester, NY area, that is also great value for the cost, Cedar Mills is a great choice. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
