I highly recommend Steve Nradozzy. Please see the details below. You might find them interesting. I was looking for contractor to correct water damage in the basement. It was a minor flood in the basement due to rain that day. Sump stopped working that day. It was possible to make the sump pump to work again and in a few hours it removed all standing water in the basement. The large carpets in the basement remained soaked with water. I got in touch with about 8 contractors before I found Steven Nardozzi’s Rochester Environmental Company via Thumbtack service. Steven was the only contractor who replied to my request for water damage restoration publicized through Thumbtack. I could not choose any contractor from the eight which I was communicating with before Steve. One contractor offered partial help, not being able to deal with bacteria and mold aspects of the water damage. Another contractor promised an estimate for the damage and provided useful info during his estimate visit, but has not provided me with an estimate. The 3rd contractor was not able to answer my questions during his estimate visit. His company sent me the estimate, but was not willing to answer my questions about the estimate. The 4th contractor has answered my questions during estimate visit. He provided his estimate the next day. He was not willing to answer my questions about his estimate, and has informed that he has signed five contracts since he visited me. He informed me that he would not be able to serve me in a timely manner. The 5th contractor has answered my questions during his visit. He sent me his estimate the next day. He answered to many of my questions. However most of his answers are elusive and do not seem to me reasonable. The 6th contractor had no time to do the job. The 7th contractor was also very busy. The 8th contactor has promised me an estimate without seeing the basement. He has not sent one to me. I was pretty disappointed with the lack of adequate response to my request for water damage restoration in the basement. This is why I have telephoned Steve Nardozzi as soon as Thumbtack service has sent me Steven’s reply. We had a conversation where Steve provided concise and constructive answers to everything I asked him about. My first question to him was Does he actually do water damage restoration. I asked him this question as the name of his company sounded to general to me, Rochester Environmental Company. Steve said water damage restoration is exactly what he does for 15 years. He then rolled out his credentials in response. His credentials include graduating courses with IICRC and BPI. This has surprised me, since I have heard IICRC many times from other contractors, but NOT BPI. Our conversation may have lasted for at least 20 min, and I do not fully remember it. But in the course of it I asked Steve if he knows of a good way to protect my new sump pump. He replied to this by sending me an e-mail with the description pf the method the same day. However, the conversation went in such a constructive manner that I asked Steve, if he could the estimate the next day, Friday. He said he has an open slot at 10am. That is when we met. Steve gave me the estimate in about 30 min after he took the measurements and observed all of the basement. While observing the basement Steve was answering my questions and informing me about his restoration process. I have asked a few questions about some of the items in the estimate including if he would be able to start tomorrow, Saturday. He has checked something with his cell and said, yes he can start tomorrow. I gave him the job, because his figure was just $10 higher than one of the contractors which was no good in my opinion. We are in this project now 2 days. Demolition is and garbage removal is nearly done except cleaning the basement space. The drying and disinfecting processes are on automatic mostly by the machinery that Steve has set up in the basement. I am pretty the process will be fully complete in the next 3 days as everything Steve told has come to materialize. Steve has a steel trap focused mind and great sensitivity to all concerns of his customers. I do not see a competition for him as no Company I contacted has a business process as sound as that of Steve. Particularly, Steve’s communication with his potential customers and customers is top notch. I was in touch with 3 more contractors after I asked Steve to do the estimate. My opinion of Steve remains the same.

Shim did a great job installing my new kitchen faucet. I threw a challenge at him, an old faucet that had been installed over 40 years ago. He had to wrestle with it a little bit, but he persevered. He wouldn't let that faucet get the best of him! New faucet installed in a jiffy. I've got his number in my phone for the next project that comes up and will definitely be using him again.

Ed and his crew were able to help us with a super quick turn around on our exterior house painting job. Ed kept up to date on how it was going and answered all my questions. They did leave open garbage bags and got paint all over my garden hose and that is why I couldn't do five stars. Overall I am happy with the job. Thanks Ed and Josh!

Bill replaced a swinging door between the dining room and kitchen. He arrived on time. He trimmed the new door, beveled the edges as needed, moved the hardware to the new door, installed and adjusted it so that it swings like the previous door. He cleaned up and left the room as he found it. Very satisfied.

George installed drains and water piping for our basement kitchen and laundry areas. He had to re-route all of the electrical and plumbing to a tankless hot water which he also installed. He completed the project according to the building code for the town. He did everything in a timely manner and within our budget. He was very good about telling us why he was doing things the way he was doing them and advising us so we don’t have any problems in the future. He also built a bathroom, installed a shower, and new toilet in the basement. I think he could do almost any kind of remodeling project and I think he would do a great job. I highly recommend him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

  • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
    • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
    • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
    • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
  • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
  • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
