"I started seeing Mike about 2 years ago. I have a lot of pain in my shoulders from overuse and weight lifting. At my initial appointment, he showed me some exercises to do at home. These have been very beneficial. None of the other massage therapists I treated with have provided at home exercises. Prior to seeing Mike, I used to just shop around for the best price for a massage. Now, I will not go to anyone else (even on vacations). H He always listens to my concerns and addresses them thoroughly. It has been an extreme pleasure working with Mike. I can strongly recommend Mike as both a professional, caring physical therapist and a very nice person to talk to during treatments."

"Natalie was amazing! Not only was she able to relieve the stress & pain in my back, but with her myofascial techniques, she helped my mobility in my arms! I've gone to a number of massage therapists & Natalie rates far above all of them. I will continue to see her whenever I possibly can! Being a big guy, she has the strength in her hands to get deep into the muscle! Awesome! Purely awesome! "

"I have been experiencing back pain on and off for about three months. I was referred to John Smelts by a client of his and decided to give him a try. John has been working out of his home since 1984. It was a pleasant surprise and reminded me of the good-ole-days when businesses were family run or home-based and you received exceptional customer service. It turned out that my first impressions were accurate. John had me fill out a medical history form and he then asked a lot of questions about my back pain issues. I was impressed by how patient and concerned he was regarding my chronic pain. He described how he incorporates energy healing into his massages and suggested several changes to my diet which I am going to try. John also offered insights into how I may be creating my own back pain because of my habits and lifestyle. He demonstrated a specific yoga exercise which has helped greatly in better managing the pain and stress in my back. I requested a full body massage for one hour. John’s massage really worked out the kinks in my body because I have been under a lot of stress and holding onto a lot of pain in my muscles. He used many different techniques including a percussion vibrator. I liked all the different types of acupressure work he did which I feel covered all of the major muscles in my body very effectively. Afterwards, I was completely pain free and felt more relaxed than I have in years. It has been two months since my massage treatment and I no longer have back pain. I can see myself becoming a regular client."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
