Joe was very capable and responsible. He quickly alleviated a very tense situation for homeowner because of the damage the high winds had caused. He Talked and explained well and his final cost was quite reasonable. He even took away for recycling the old damaged shingles . Also, during his repair of my roof he also inspected it carefully and made other corrections/repairs as needed. Joe is a top hire for roofing repairs. Thank you Thumbtack!

I'm very happy with their work. They removed the carpet first then install new flooring in the family room. I would like to recommend them to my family friends, and family for any home improvement work.

If you are looking for help in solving an environmental issue with your residence, look no further. Steve did a fabulous job helping us remove asbestos tile from the basement of our house which we hope to put on the market soon. Here’s what we liked: his prompt (same day) and courteous response to our request; his careful consideration of several courses we might take to solving the issue; his insistence that we take a fact-based approach before proceeding (getting the tile tested - it came back positive); his willingness to guide us through the much less costly route of doing the work ourselves, albeit with careful instructions about safety procedures. We rented a piece of equipment from him which sucked air through a basement window while we were removing the tile, purchased a special tool (spud bar), taped entrances with plastic, used mask and detergent, etc. He also had many other suggestions from a hypothetical inspector’s point of view about how we could make our house more salable. In short, if you have lived in the same house for forty-three years as we have, this is an extremely knowledgeable young man whom you would like to have at your side giving advice. Hire him!

Jeff recently completed a bathroom renovation in my lake cottage. The house was built in 1910 and it required Jeff to completely tear out the existing bathroom and do a complete remodel. Jeff did all of the work including the tear out, plumbing, electric, tiling, painting, etc. Jeff focuses on quality and detail which is extremely important especially when doing tile work. He also replaced doors in my home and was able to find solutions to unique door sizes and uneven floors. I would be happy to speak with anyone who is considering hiring Jeff for a project!

I used Scott's remodeling for both my siding and gutters. Overall I had a great experience in dealing with Scott. Yes... like with any job there were a few "glitches" but Scott quickly took care of them all. He made sure we were completely satisfied. I would use him again if I had to do it all over again.

Frank came over this fall and repaired my damaged gutters and I recently had a roof leak after the first snow fall so he found that I didn't have any ice barrier under my bottom row of shingles that caused my wall and windows to be damp and wet so he installed the ice barrier which seems to fix the problem and he also noticed my pie boots needed attention and he replaced the pipe boot ....he saved me from having to replace my entire roof...insurance company said it was great work and now they use him for their needs...thanks frank

Steve has done multiple home improvements & renovations for us. He efficiently and cost effectively installed a new energy saving furnace & hot water heater which both had energy rebates. Steve suggested options for ceramic tile flooring he installed for us along with ideas and details that gave the project a clean, updated look. Steve is a polite and accomodating professional with experience in many areas of renovation. We would highly recommend him

Rick Mincer - RAM Construction Rick - assisted by his son Richie - worked on a house we bought while we were on vacation in Florida. The house is a 3 BR Ranch on a village lot w/an attached 2 car garage & covered patio. Built in 1964, the house was purchased "as is" and was in the process of being fixed up after sitting unused for around 10 years and having had a roofing problem that caused some interior damage. We had RAM complete some of the water damage work prior to doing some major remodeling in the MBR & Bath. The bath was totally remodeled with all new fixtures and drywall. The MBR received a new sheetrock ceiling replacing the orig. 12" sq tiles and repairs to the walls before redecorating. The Kitchen was gutted and a complete new Kitchen with all new appliances was competed next. In the process of working on the kitchen, the boiler on the heating system failed and we decided to replace all of that system with a new forced air furnace. RAM worked with Main Plumbing & Heating on that project and also supplied temporary heat by setting up some temp electric heat units in the basement. RAM worked for us for 3 months - while we were in Florida - our input was to visit Lowe's and pick out things we wanted and they picked them up & installed them. We're very pleased with Rick's work and plan to use RAM to remodel the 2nd bathroom and do some more work on trim & prep for getting other areas ready for paint, in the next few weeks.

They provided a roof tear off and new installation. They were on time and worked hard all day long. They communicated well with us, as customers. There were no hidden costs or surprises from their estimate. And their clean up was outstanding! We liked them so much, we're using them again this year for more work. And we referred them to friends.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

        • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
          • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

        • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
          • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
        • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
          • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
        • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
          • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
        • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
          • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
        • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
          • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
        • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
          • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
