George followed through from beginning to end and did what he said he would when he said he would do it. Very, very satisfied with the pruning of barberries, hollies, viburnum and some other tree trimming. Very fairly priced, too. Don't hesitate to call him. George

Matt and his crew built a fence and gate for me. Matt was great. Very responsive, easily accessible, and willing to answer questions. The job was delayed from the projected start day due to unpredictable March weather. Matt called me and let me know of the delays. The fence looks good; I am happy with it. I had 4 quotes. Even if it hadn't been the lowest, which it was, I probably would have went with them anyway because Matt was quick to respond and answered every question I had. Other quotes didn't include removal of the old fence or the permit, and they never bothered to tell me that. They were trying to low-ball. Matt's quote included everything; start to finish! And the last thing he said to me was "If there are any problems, just call me. We stand behind or work!"

I hired MDM to dig out behind my garage and level my back yard. When Melissa came over to size up the job, she saw some tree stumps that she felt could be removed. Because of the small space the stumps were in other tree companies would not remove them. She put me in touch with a friend of hers (Jeff) who had a small stump grinder. He did a great job in removing the stumps (I highly recommend him also). Once the stumps were out, Melissa and her crew went to work digging and leveling. The entire time everyone was professional and respectful and making sure the job was going as I envisioned. The job took two days to complete which included digging, leveling, stump removal, a french drain, spreading 6 tons of gravel around the garage, and reseeding the lawn. I thought her price was fair especially for the amount of work done. I highly recommend her and wouldn't hesitate to hire her for another job.

Lusk Tree Service is outstanding. Out of a dozen estimates, Lusk came in hundreds of dollars cheaper than other tree services. I had a tree removed along with two stumps and had another tree trimmed. They took extra care not to damage my lawn with heavy equipment and cleaned everything up. Extremely professional. Would hire them again in a heartbeat!

Dealing with Michael was easy. His work was very neat. We had Cadles L&L remove and stump grind 3 trees. The area looks way better than before. After using Thumbtack to get quotes from tree services, I had 5 others asking for my business. Cadles L&L had the best value by a large margin - - glad I went with them. Took credit card payment as well, which was also another dealbreaker. The only drawback was that I wasn't home to see the crew at work taking down my huge pine trees!!! Will most likely be using again!!

My husband and I hired Adam and his crew to remove a massive black walnut tree in our backyard. We live right in the middle of two other houses where our yards are separated by fences with little accessibility to our backyard for equipment from out front. This job was going to be far from easy or convenient, but Adam and his crew did an outstanding job of coming in and removing the entire tree and it only took 2 days! Although 2 days seems like a long time for a tree removal, they had to work around a tough environment and a large tree, and we were very pleased with how quickly and how clean they did the job. Adam and his crew were always on time, communicated very well, and went above and beyond for us. We were very happy with the end result and how clean our yard looked when they left. We will definitely continue to hire him for other tree and landscape jobs. We can't thank him enough!

Mr. Clean All (aka., Hughan Reid) has been helping me overhaul my whole house!! Waterproofing/ mold kill/ cleaning /painting basement and backyard weed removal done in 2 days. Glassblock windows installed today by sundown and driveway sealing done by Saturday! He is an amazingly hard worker. He and his brother are already doing the glassblock windows today and will be done before sundown!!! Asphalt and driveway seal Saturday and my backyard wisteria and lilac need to be trimmed way back. I just met him last Friday!!?! He's unbelievably reliable and super reasonable, good communication, etc. I feel so relieved that things are moving along so well ❤️ he already has gained my trust to give a spare key. I know I'm in good hands all around in this probable house sell process which hasn't been an easy emotional decision. 🙄😔

Arborist Pros of Rochester did a great job with cutting some very large branches of a few different trees in my yard. They were prompt, super clean, and fairly priced. I plan on using them again for some other tree maintenance next year.

The recent record-setting winds completely knocked down one of our pine trees and a second was uprooted and threatening to fall on our neighbor's fence. With others facing much worse situations I really didn't expect to get same-day service for our tree situation. Fanto's spared us from incurring additional expense (of replacing our neighbor's fence) and gave us a fair price for their quick, quality and courteous service. I would hire them again and will recommend them to family and friends.

Jared was prompt in quoting a price to cut down a large tree, remove all material, and grind out the stum. Jared performed the work in a professional manner and cleaned up well after he was done. The people working with Jared were hard working and respectful. I would recommend Jared for this type of work.

Paul removed trees, trimmed bushes as well cutting our grass. He set up an appointment to give me an estimate and after giving me a very reasonable price began work the same day. Paul not only did an outstanding job but also did it in the time he said it would take. I would definatly use his services again.

L&L Landscaping were very professional and customer oriented during their work with me and my family. The work was completed quicker than estimated and was done well. They were able to remove a giant willow tree, maple tree, tree stump and trim another tree in less than a week. I recommend L&L Landscaping for your future outdoor work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
