"Clean, clean, clean. I’m very hesitant about going out of my premises for massage. However his Bronx apt was chic, clean, polished and so relaxing. Definitely surpassed my expectations. Thanks once again for the Piña Colada. #relaxing"

"Danielle is extremely knowledgeable and affordable. Unlike most hair stylists, she suggests only what she thinks is best for the client's hair health, not what will make her the most money. I felt at home while she was doing my hair. The way she washes hair is so relaxing. She constantly asks if what she is doing is comfortable, or if the braiding is too tight (which it rarely was). She listened to what I wanted and actually did it. I would 200% recommend her, especially to women who care about the health of their hair. Even more importantly, her and her family care about my safety. After she finished with my hair, her fiance gave me a ride to the train station, even waiting with me until we realized I had missed the train, and then took me to another train station. I can't express how happy I am with what they have done for my confidence! And they fed me, so you can't beat that!"

"Yury was very communicative in the run up to the massage. He was efficient and gave an excellent, vigorous massage. The tension I had in my back before he came was gone when he left. I would hire him again (and most likely will!) anytime."

"Michele was amazing. I've had massages at the red door and other massage places and she was the best. The pressure was perfect and it just had me feeling stress free a day later. She drove to my place and ensured I got the full 90 min massage. I would recommend her to anyone and will be booking my next appointment with her."

"Cynthia is the best masseuse I have found after years of trying different people and styles. Her knowledge of anatomy and medical issues is impressive. She is a deep and wonderful soul whom I trust completely. Once she even correctly diagnosed that I had a large ovarian cyst during a massage. I got it checked out and she was right!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
