The job was the removal of a stand up piano from our living room. The trick to getting it out and onto his truck (due to our porch design) involved removing a section so he could line up his truck and load the piano. He also made sure the porch section he had removed was put back in place and that I was happy. I would recommend checking him out for any odd jobs as he does all kinds of projects as well as landscaping.

I hired Cadle's landscaping service for our lawn mowing and my garden bed. Michael kept communication up and was very professional with his communication and invoicing. He has been doing a fantastic job mowing our lawn, he's very efficient and detailed. Makes it look like a golf course! And the garden bed work I had done he was very detailed with and made it look gorgeous! his pricing is also very reasonable. Will recommend him to anyone for landscaping needs.

Adam was very responsive and professional. His father Don did a great job cutting the grass. When hearing I had an urgent job for preparing a veggie garden, they did their best to accomandate my need even when they were having friends visiting from out of town. They did a great job to meet my special request on the garden. The prices are very reasonable. I'd hire them again in the future.

I am writing to thank Brian from Cold Spring Landscapes for the absolutely beautiful patio you built at our home. From our initial meeting to discuss design, materials, and cost estimate to completion of the project you were very professional. Of particular importance was your ability to listen to our ideas and use your experience and expertise to offer design solutions that fit perfectly with our ideas and budget to create the finished product. Given your emphasis on using only the best quality products in your work and high standards, the cost for our project was extremely fair and reasonable. When hiring a contractor for any home improvement project it is important that the contractor respond promptly to inquiries and clearly define all aspects of the project. You not only completed the patio project exactly within the time frame but also paid great attention to the detail and high expectations that defines your superior workmanship. I strongly recommend that others interested in artistic talent, experience, expertise, honesty, integrity and a solid work ethic contact you for their outdoor home improvement projects. They won't be disappointed.

My wife and I hired Eric to build a replacement deck on our home. We are more than impressed with the results. Even when more material was needed, Eric consulted with us and did not proceed until all expectations were explained and we agreed. Also, the quality of the job is fantastic and he nailed our design idea right on the head! I highly recommend Eric to anyone looking for an excellent job at more than a fair price!! We will definitley do business with him again! Chauncey & Chris Bennett East Homer, New York

As someone who hires out for just about everything, my priorities are: a fair price, quality work that will last, punctuality, and professionalism. Its not often you find someone who checks all these boxes, and I'm guilty of sacrificing (for example) punctuality and professionalism for an aggressive price (which is often a mistake). That said, this was one of the few times I was able to find someone who checked every box and then some. Not only was Andrew passionate about the job (he built me an 800 sq ft patio), but he took the time to educate me on the process along the way. In addition, he brought some incredibly creative ideas for us to consider, and helped us maximize our budget for the project. Even before he was hired, he helped us to understand how to shop for hardscape products and services, something we had zero familiarity with. If you are looking to have work done, and you are lucky enough to connect with A. Stein, you should have the utmost confidence that you're in good hands. He was thorough, professional, passionate, and his quality of work is on par with some of the best I have ever seen. On top of that, it's easy to see he is invested in wowing his customers, and in my case I can tell you he did just that. We love our patio, and I will be referring everyone I know to A. Stein Landscapes. -RR

Troy is very professional and faith based. He was willing to work with me on price. It was one of his first times doing drapes and it looks like an interior designer did it. Would absolutely hire him again. Would recommend him.

Jason was very good to work with in designing our retaining wall, his work was excellent and the results were fantastic. The wall came out great as he paid close attention to all details ad we made a couple creative changes as we worked through the final design and construction of the wall.

Jim just gutted and replaced my bathroom upstairs. We were very pleased with the work. We asked him to do a good job for limited cost. He even took the time to put a design in the tile. I would definitely hire him again!

Frank is willing to do almost any kind of work. He is conscientious about doing it right and gets to work promptly. If he is going to be delayed or thinks the weather will interfere with working he always calls to let us know. He has done gardening, landscaping, junk removal, rototilling, delivered loads of rocks and mulch. He has helped with installing an awning. Frank has a positive attitude and is in good physical condition so he works fast. His services don't come cheap, but he is worth it.

Joe and his crew did an excellent job on our landscaping. They turned our yard into a showplace. Joe was very patient and explained everything to us. Also, importantly, repurposed many of the plants so it was a savings. We would recommend him very highly! Thanks!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
