Michael was professional, courteous, and responsible. I appreciated the care with which he looked after my two cats and my home, and would recommend him to others looking for a trusted in-home pet sitter.

(+) Suki fulfilled the expected tasks of a cat sitter -- providing food, filling the water bowl, and scooping the litter box. She sent daily photos. She was pretty quick to responding to my texts. Suki's rate/cost is affordable compared to other cat sitters, especially professionals (-) Although she sent daily photos, they were sometimes just blurry snaps of my cat's back. From the photos alone, it did not seem that Suki spent much time with him. Rather felt like she was merely showing me that she "checked in" to see my cat. I was disappointed to return home and see that the curtains were down when she said that she will make sure they are up.

Jen and her associates truly love pets. So many of the pet-sitters are solely focused on dogs. These guys really know and like cats, too. And my cats like them back.

My husband and I cannot express the joy we feel having Lynne be with her baby girl Lucy during the week when we cannot. She keeps us posted via text with pictures of Lucy during her walk and when she returns home. Recently relocating from Wisconsin to New Jersey and having to replace our dog sitter with lynne has been a wonderful experience for both of us and for Lucy.

Sarah watched my dogs for 10 days about a month ago. I have two dogs and work from home so they have beyond extreme separation anxiety, so I was very tentative to travel, but had to leave the country so taking my dogs with me was not an option. A close friend of mine recommended her to me and I tried it. I am so beyond grateful for Sarah and her services. She brought my dogs everywhere with her, fortunately she has a job allowing her to bring them to work with her, she brought them to local dog parks and even brought them to a dog bakery to pick out their own snacks and then stopped at PetSmart to let them pick out some new toys, much more than I would ever expect any petsitter to do. She kept me updated sending me at least two texts with pictures of my babies and responded to all my messages. My female dog, Madison, takes a while to warm up to people and can be snippy, Sarah had no issues at all with her and Madison trusted her within minutes of Sarah watching her. I returned home to a wonderful picture collage of my dogs "Vacation with Sarah" and them happily asleep in their beds snuggled with their new toys, I have Sarah routinely come take them on trips now as they love to leave the house and adventure with her, they always come home super happy and then sadly walk around for at least an hour after she leaves. I couldn't have found a better pet sitter if I had duplicated myself! She truly is amazing

Because my dog is old and gets sick with the kennel cough shot, I had not been able to get her groomed. When I found Ray & Fay who will come to your house. My dog was so matted and overgrown hair. They did a wonderful job. Fay was so good with my dog, who hates grooming. She did as good a job as any groomer to whom I've taken my dog. It was an excellent experience

When our regular neighborhood petsitter was no longer available, I wasn't sure what we would do. Our cats get fed wet food, and our oldest cat has some medical issues, so we wanted someone who wouldn't just "pet and run." Kate stayed over and cared for them as we would. Our cats were calm and content when we came home. They want her back!

I am so happy to have found Amber she was great to work with, and she sent me texts after each visit checking in on my cat. I already booked two more jobs with her. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a pet sitter.

Katy is a reliable, trustworthy and loving cat-sitter. I trust Katy completely to care for, feed and medicate our 16 year old cat. For many years Katy has taken care of him for us over long weekends to up to 3 weeks while we've been away overseas. She has always been there for us even when we've made last minute plans and over holidays. Our cat's special needs require being fed 2-3 times a day from a variety of foods which include frozen rabbit and/or chicken that needs to be defrosted ahead of time, cleaning his box every day while keeping a watchful eye he isn't blocked, and administering 2-3 medications up to twice a day. Katy goes above and beyond and truly does an amazing job, and she does so with love! Our cat does not like many people yet he has fallen in love with Katy and now runs to greet her at the door! I would absolutely recommend Katy to care for your cat if you are looking for someone who is responsible and caring too.

Ed has been invaluable to us and our new puppies. We work in Manhattan during the week, and simply can't make it back to NJ during the day, but Ed has been there every day we've needed him, making sure our puppies get the attention, water, exercise, etc. that they need, and he obviously cares about the puppies. He's also given us links to articles, advice, etc. on raising new puppies. I fully recommend Edz Pet Walking!

SixLegs has really been a day to day life changer for our household of three dogs.I was relieved to know our building had a pet perk. SixLegs was their pet consierge service so having their trust in their company was very helpful in taking that stress off our shoulders to find a sitter. The app has made scheduling, communication, and up to date tracking so useful to us. We go away for days at a time so their commitment to our three boys has certainly shown. The boys are always happy when I check our cameras within the apartment and they are constantly playing with the sitter so when we get home it’s as if we never left. They stay happy at all times and that is what makes SixLegs invaluable to us.

I recently had to leave on short notice for a busniess trip and needed a dog sitter ASAP. I contacted Alpha Dog Walking and they were able to accommodate my needs for a weekend sitter and were willing to have my pups stay in the sitter's home as long as they were well behaved. Overall, very quick and good service - I received an immediate reply too!

I needed pet-sitting for 2 cats while out of town - I had a bad experience with a prior cat-sitter but Ana was great to work with. When I came home, the cats were happy & fed, there was clean water available & the litter was clean. I will definitely use this service again for my next trip!

I could not be happier with Khalifa's Animal House -- and with Granesha -- for her work. After going through dog walkers, and being disappointed, I can finally feel comfortable and secure with the person who walks my dog. Not only did she insist on meeting my dog before walks began, a huge plus so that my anxious pup could get to know her afternoon handler, but she even brought her toys and treats to better engage her and get to know her. Since hiring her, I have received an email after each and every single walk describing how the dog went, where the two went, my dog's mood, and an added bonus of both videos and pictures. As someone who worries about her worrying dog, this always puts my mind at ease. Granesha, the founder, and my personal dog-walker, considers herself an animal advocate, and I agree 100%. I am so pleased with her services and would highly recommend.

Kendall has been walking and pet sitting my Luella for almost three years now. He's more than friendly; he is truly a compassionate person who loves dogs. He's not just Luella's dog walker and pet sitter. He really is her best friend and I can't trust anyone more than him to take care of her when I'm gone. If you want someone who will truly give your dog special attention and build a real relationship with your dog, there is no one better. He even helped me find and train my new dog Margo and was extremely helpful in the process of socializing her with Luella. The whole house loves Kendall.

I was lucky enough to find Annie for a trip I was taking overseas, and I'm so glad I did! From the very first conversation, Annie was warm, open, and totally flexible in terms of arranging and coordinating times/dates for pet care. After just getting two kittens in February, I was hesitant to leave them for an extended trip. The anxiety was definitely high! But Annie made sure to assure that they would be in great hands. We met a few times before Annie came to stay and I knew right away that she would take care of the babies as if they were her own! While away, Annie made sure to send text and picture updates of the cats so that I could enjoy my time away without too much worry. It was such a delight to see new photos of the cats with Annie, and I knew each time that she was taking good care of them. I'll definitely look to Annie anytime I need a sitter. It helps having someone the cats can trust, and Annie made sure that the cats trusted her. That type of service is something you cherish. Thank you, Annie!

I was out of town and had Arianna take care of my four cats. She was very punctual and very attentive. I got daily checkins every time she came to the apartment and pictures of the cats, which made me feel much more comfortable about leaving them. When I came back the cats were comfortable and well taken care of. There was none of the usual desperation and pleas for attention that I had previously experienced when leaving them with other cat sitters. Thank you Arianna for taking such good care of my babies.

Adory was very reliable and responsible while house sitting. Adory was very conscious of maintaining everything well kept in my house. She also did light cleaning and that was very much appreciated. She responded promptly to my request and I felt at was leaving my home in very capable hands. If you want some who is responsible and not a care in the world hire Adory and you won't go wrong. I greatly recommend her services.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

      • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
      • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
        • 45-minute visit: $28.
        • 60-minute visit: $32.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
      • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
        • 12 hours: $100.
        • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
