Barb's Continuo Home Music Lessons provided home lessons to my son. Not only was the instructor very talented, but they knew exactly how to interact with a young person to keep his interest throughout the lesson and encouraged practicing beyond the lesson. Barb is always prompt and goes out of her way to accomodate scheduling issues.

I started taking Cello lessons when I retired, so I am obviously no youngster. Peter is an excellent teacher. He is very structured, very patient and obviously very knowledgeable. Not only is he also an excellent Cellist but takes the time to work with his students so that in the end, they too can excel.

My daughter has been taking violin lessons with David since she was 9 years old; and more recently, she has started classical, acoustic guitar lessons the summer before entering college. He is a dedicated professional and diligent in making sure his students learn correct technique and become more musical in their own personal way. More importantly, David has the ability to keep his lessons fun and varied! Her lessons have always been highlights of my daughter's week! I recommend David without hesitation.

Ken is an excellent cello teacher!! He is patient and tolerant. He takes the time to explain the details & the history of the instrument, the music, finger positions, bow and everything to do with learning a new instrument. Would recommend him to anyone, especially if you are learning late in life!!

Ron has been teaching my son Matt classical bass since he was in the 4th grade. He is now a freshman in college. Thanks to Ron and his innate talent and great personality Matt is a very gifted musician. During his school years here while with Ron he qualified for All County Orchestra a number of times. I can't say enough good things about Ron. He is a genius on many levels. I clearly think he is the BEST!!

Julia is an absolutely wonderful teacher. I’m an adult student, and I looked long and hard for a teacher who would be right for me. After nearly a year of false-starts I found Julia. She is a gifted musician who’s passionate about the cello and patient with a beginner like me. When I play a scale or a song, she can identify exactly what I need do to enhance my tone. Her pedagogical approach combines a keen, intuitive sense and a wide breadth of knowledge. In short, Julia is stellar and it’s a joy to be her student.

Jo was always encouraging, no matter how badly I messed up. She brought the perspectives of her various teachers, which included luminaries like Aldo Parisot. There was never a single "right way" to do something. She was more of a collaborator who helped me to find ways I could use to develop my technique and find my voice. Jo inspired me to work hard, because I found so much to gain from each lesson. She made music fun. I once lamented that I was making the Masters roll over in their graves. She said no, "the Masters were smiling, because someone was having fun playing their music!" Regardless of skill level, I feel anyone could benefit from working with her.

          About

I am a first-year college student from The Juilliard School. Unlike other students, since I have been led to some wrong places and I tried so hard to correct them with time, I know every single thing that makes performance better and easier. My job is to teach students on how to use their limited time to improve their techniques or music with my 14 years of experience in practicing and performance. Since this is my first time of official teaching, and I came from China, I love to give everyone first lesson for free.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How hard is it to learn to play the cello?

Taking cello lessons can be a rewarding experience for students young and old. The rich sound of the cello is well-loved in classical music and is found in all genres of contemporary music from modern folk to rock. As with any instrument, how hard it is to learn to play cello depends on the practice and dedication you put into it. It’s true that some people are naturally more adept at learning instruments than others, but with lessons and a daily commitment, you too can learn to play the cello.

Cello lessons can be a smart investment, especially for new players. Even professional cellists benefit greatly from ongoing training, but for those new to cello it’s especially important for forming a strong foundation for playing. From the proper posture to understanding finger positions, regular cello lessons give you a benchmark to measure your daily practice against. With a professional cello teacher guiding you, the sky’s the limit.
