I'm very happy that I hired Jerome to put together a day bed with trundle, which had large number of wooden slats on which the mattresses go, which needed to be all properly installed to provide the spring effect, aside from putting together the actual bed and a roll-out -- two large boxes with lots of small parts in which the item was delivered. Jerome has done a superb job, with a great attention to detail which was especially necessary in this case, but I didn't need to mention anything to him, he already knew the nuance with springy slats and their direction. He finished sooner than I thought it would take, which just shows his skill, experience, and resultant efficiency. He accommodated my schedule and did the job after 5 pm, which I appreciate very much as a customer with a busy schedule. I also want to note Jerome's great communication skills in that he kept communication to a necessary minimum, not requiring extra attention, direction, or decision-making on my part, yet I felt assured that he asked me all that I had to tell him and would ask me more should there be a need. In summary -- a fast, high quality work, with no frills, exceptions, breakdowns and excuses, just exemplary work ethic and professionalism -- all that combined with his most competitive bid on my project with a fixed price commitment (not an estimate and then an hourly rate for the actual work -- the experience I had before). I can't be more satisfied with Jerome and his work, would definitely call on him again for my future needs, will be suggesting him to my friends and recommend him to anybody who is considering hiring him. Thanks, Jerome.

Greivin constucted a custom garden box that had a bit of complexity because it had to hide an unsightly platform on my patio. It was excellent work and as importantly he was consistently communicating with me and my wife and very good at setting expectations and following through as promised.

My experience was good, it was just a little hasty and sloppy. There are still a few stains on my couch that need to be cleaned. It just seemed really rushed. The guy I had was very nice and he did a good job, but there was water on the floor and my hardwood floors were scratched from moving the couch. Just would have appreciated a little slower pace.

Daniel and his guys did a great job installing oak hardwood floors in our 1,600 sq ft home. He also removed the previous tile, blue stone, replaced two sections of rotten subfloor, and leveled the surface. Overall it was 7 plus days for multiple guys and I feel he charges a fair price. I've already recommended him to my in-laws as they are updated the floors in their basement. Daniel is a great guy and you should definitely use him if you want a quality job for a good price.

After a recent poor experience with a contractor on this site, we were a little gun shy! But James and his crews are definite pros. We had them install 2 vinyl tile and 1 ceramic tile floors. It was completed in the time he gave us. They were clean and courteous. And the work was done to our satisfaction. Will definitely hire him again

I had my fair share of bad experiences with contractors and he was refreshing to work with. I am going to call on him for other work I need done

Luis accommodated me for a free estimate and shortly after completed my hardwood floors which included staining as well. He assisted me with getting beautiful floor vents for my central air and also purchased and installed the saddle needed prior to the flooring job. He worked late and arrived very early to enable us to be back in our home within a few days. The floors came out amazing and he was professional throughout. I highly recommend using L&M Flooring.

It has been a pleasure working with Mr. Handy and his crew during this project which includes various repairs in my home. So far they have done plumbing, sheetrocking, flooring and tile work. They have one more task to complete. And hopefully, that goes smooth as well.

I recently hired Dave, to install a floor and to refinish a dining room. Dave's work is amazing! He suggested different ideas for the room, and CONSULTED with me before doing it(I've had problems with other carpenter just taking upon themselves to do things that u did not authorize and got charged for it) YOU WILL NOT have that problem with Dave he is an honest and hardworking guy! The floor, paint, and materil i purchasd was very expensive & I was concerned about it not coming out perfect. However, he came to my home did an excellent job. He was extremely neat & the room came out absolutely perfect.

Chris and his guys did a great job ripping up my rugs and installing vinyl plank flooring. From start to finish, it was a pleasure working with him. At our first meeting, He is very personable and honest. When he came to do the work, he worked quickly and meticulously. And when they were finished, they cleaned everything up and put all the debris out to curb, which the garbage men took the next day. I couldn’t be happier, and will definitely hire him again in the future!

I highly recommend global hill construction company Mr. Shoodi performed an outstanding job and I am thrilled with the final results! My floors presented a challenge as they were badly damaged with staining and paint the full home In only 4 days shoodi transformed my flooring to looking brand new once again and pants results was very good. His technique provided me with many pros: reasonably priced, no need to move out of my home as his products are non-toxic ( a plus if you have pets or children ), the convenience of no sand or dust clean-up. Shoodi and his co-worker naveed were at all times polite, professional, and always on time as scheduled. They also meticulously moved all of my furniture back in place once the job was completed. An added bonus is their office manager ahmad who was a pleasure to deal with. Ahmad diligently took care of all appointment details including my building's insurance requirements, etc. A major plus for the consumer! New York, NY. Shoodi was a true professional.

Hired for a big job, 2 bathrooms gutted, redo downstairs area, finish wood floors, replace 8 door frames, some remodel stuff and paint. Did a very good job, would use again. Only issue was the end of the job felt rushed as we were moving in and he had a deadline. He was doing finishing work while the moving truck was unloading. Overall quite good just maybe better use of schedule on future work would be my recommendation

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
