Jerome was great! He his communication and quick responses were greatly appreciated. His quality of work was tremendous and he will be the first person I call next time I need an installation, repair, or any home maintenance questions. Clean and efficient job while installing a TV mount in my place and made sure we were satisfied with the results. Jerome was very personable and enjoyed having him install the TV wall mount.

Joseph's company assembled an ikea dresser that I previously had paid to have assembled through Ikea and they did a terrible job. Within months my dresser was falling apart. Unlike most companies, Joseph did not give me a window of time that my repair would happen rather he let me choose an exact time it would be assembled! His staff showed up on time called me when he arrived and went above and beyond. I had my dresser assembled early in the morning and there were several people sleeping in my apartment and he consistently apologized for how loud it was when he wasn't being loud at all! Joseph called me while my dresser was being assembled to make sure everything was going well. Most importantly, Joseph offered me the best rate out of anyone I called! The entire assembly took about an hour and other companies were trying to charge me $150! Overall, I am more than satisfied with my experience and will definitely be using him again!

Walter came to repair a window for me over the weekend when I could not find any other company open. He communicated very clearly what needed to be done. He did a very neat job and left the premises clean. He was very polite and friendly too. The price was reasonable.

"Mr Kurt Anthony" did wallpaper removal, wallpaper installation, wall repair and paint for me. He did a remarkable job across the board. He came on time with all supplies and a pleasant attitude. He was patient and never rushed, and actually quite a perfectionist which was a pleasant surprise. We worked out a fair price and the work was excellent. Thank you and praises to "Mr Kurt Anthony!"

Very happy with the service provided. Stayed in touch throughout, kept the appointments and showed on on time. All work was done very well. Nobody else wanted to repair my windows, everybody wanted to replaced them - he picked it up and fixed the windows saving me a chunk of money. Thanks!

Matt was great! I have been waiting on the contractor to repair my roof. Meanwhile needed to tarp it (since hiring the contractor tiles were stripped of the roof -while waiting for them to come) Matt came and tarped the roof even in the pouring rain (I felt terrible) . He even advised me of the roofs condition saying it was it good condition dispite the missing tiles and to let the contractors know I knew the there would be no Plywood repairs needed(they [contractors] were already trying to sell me plywood!). I can sleep tonight knowing no rain will come in while waiting on the contractor (I wish they were as communicative and fast as Matt was.)

Juan was a true professional. He was hired to swap out a light fixture and install two of them, and to repair and paint some trim around a balcony door. He gave great advice, took great care with his work, and the results were perfect. I definitely plan to hire Juan again for business and personal handyman needs.

For window repair and installation, Artistic Lule is great. Alban and Stiv are honest, professional and on-time. They gave me a very thorough no-cost in home estimate. They took the time to explain what was wrong about my windows and how they were planning on fixing them. They also told me what was right with my windows and weren’t going to try to sell me unneeded and costly repairs. They submitted a very reasonable estimate and we scheduled an appointment. They worked efficiently and did a great job, finishing on time in one day. I highly recommend them and I look forward to working with them again.

Darren was a pleasure to work with, a true professional. He asked for a description and pictures of the issue so he knew exactly what was needed for the repair job. Darren was highly efficient and reasonably priced. I will definitely be using him for any future repairs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
