Chief Black Hawk, on the South Face of the Historic (1914/1929) Black Hawk Hotel Building, Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin:
Michael took our basic vision (a sepia-toned tribute to our building's namesake, Chief Black Hawk) and hit it out of the ballpark. This is the best money I have ever spent. Ever. The PR and goodwill that his art has generated is worth 100x the price of the mural.
Yes, Michael is the consummate artist. Yes, he works on his own schedule and he lives by his own rules. And he makes absolutely amazing art. Accept these things, venture outside your comfort zone of strict deadlines, rigid schedules, and boring politics; you will be greatly rewarded. Get to know Michael over the course of your project, you won't be sorry. Rome wasn't built in a day, great art doesn't happen overnight.
The most interesting connection between the muralist and our project is that a Michael (recently of Springfield, IL) has probably painted more Lincoln murals than anyone else, and when he came to Wisconsin to paint the Chief, he didn't realize that Abraham Lincoln fought in the Black Hawk War (1832) and has his horse stolen with 5 miles of our location. Just a serendipitous connection between the President, the Chief and the artist.
Be a patron of the arts, hire Michael Mayosky to create your next mural. He isn't an artist who paints murals, he's a muralist. There is clearly a difference. I will be hiring a Michael to paint a second mural, either a Black Hawk Porter beer label or a flag of the Black Hawk War, on the 50' silo at my farm in Koshkonong. Watch for it!
