Kerry has been a sympathetic, empathetic, and thoughtful professional since my first phone call with her in the spring of 2013. I have utilized all of the Darwin Dogs offerings (selection, people training, dog behavior assessment, pack walks) and would, withoutany hesitation, recomend Kerry Stack. The first dog Kerry helped us with blessed and changed our family forever. I am eternally grateful and indebted to you for your support Kerry. My toddler with struggles would not be the person he is today if Alley Girl was not there for him. Thank you. Now, Max is teaching me many lessons , and Kerry, three seasons latter, is still expanding the way I think. Finally, when it was necessary Kerry interacted with my vet. He was throughly impressed with her professionalism and knowledge, and stated that I was working with the right person. Of course, I already knew that.

My husband and I got our Border Collie (Isis) when he was 8 weeks old. We started training classes with Cindy soon after. Isis is almost 10 years old now.over those nine plus years we went through basic, Intermediate, clicker, canine good citizen, agility, o-gility...pretty much everything Cindy offers. The classes are fun and informative, a great bonding experience for you and your dog. Once we ran out of classes we just kept going back. Cindy is an excellent teacher and trainer. You will learn just as much as your dog if not more. Isis loves going to "school" as we call it. Just saying the word "school" to him makes his ears perk up then he dashes to the back door ready to go. Cindy makes dog training (school) something to look forward to every week. Thanks Cindy.

I have been using Jeff as my main trainer for over a year. My dog is off the charts nice and smart. We owe it to him! He is unbelievably nice and uses only positive training methods. My dog understands and responds to over 150 commands.(prob. more) Her name is Lilly and she is a 13 month old West Highland Terrier. He is well worth every penny and then some. Lilly literally follows every command we give her. She is also a certified service dog and TDI therapy dog. She visits nursing a home at least once a month.

I met Barb about 4 years ago while at a 4-H meeting with my daughter. We were introduced to a whole new level of dog training that we didn't know was possible. All the struggles my daughter was having with her dog didn't seem to be a challenge to Barb. Barb always had an unique way to approach each situation. Not only does she have a fresh new way of looking at training she is cheerful and encouraging even though her students don't always follow through on their end. Barb geniuinly cares about her students and their dogs. You willl have a hard time finding any one as knowledgable and hardworking as Barb.

I would highly refer any friend to Walk This Way. Dianne was punctual, very giving of her time. For the first visit I felt I gained a lot of dog training knowledge. Very friendly and accomplished a lot for a first visit. I will be using Dianne for further training.

Very informative session. She gave very clear step by step instructions as to how to train my dog to be better on the leash and when encountering strangers, and also the reasons behind the doggie psychology, too. I also really liked the action plan she sent us a few days later with first priority training and then the steps to do from there. Reading about dog training is sometimes very theoretical, and it's nice to have an expert assess what's going on exactly with your specific dog.

I know Gina from Pet Smart and saw how well she trained dogs and pet parents. Gina was very caring and atentitive to all their needs. When I needed pet sitting services, I knew she would be able to care for my kids. Gina is very through with knowing each of my pets needs and how to care for them. My dog and one of my cats have special needs and she made sure they received that special care. She took time to hang out with them and play too! She gave me updates with every visit! I have used other people in the past but felt they were more about making money than caring for my pets. Gina goes outside the box by bringing in my mail, emptying garbage, shoveling snow off my porch, washing food bowls, adjusting the temp in my house and loving my kids. Gina is fully trained to admimister meds, and had no problem doing it for my dog. I know if one of my pets needed emergency care, she will not hesitate to take care of it! I trust Gina with my pets and in my home! I am so thankful to be able to rely on such a caring person that has such knowledge and ability to care for the things that I love the most, my pets! I am so happy to have a pet caretaker that I trust and love!

I provide one-on-one training with the dog and the client. This way, I can observe the relationship between the two and modify any disruptive behaviors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
