I hired Michael to replace a front entry door that was irreparable. The original door was a multi-panel decorative solid wood door around 100 years old, and I knew that finding a replacement would prove challenging. Michael was more than up to the task, and found a company that could create essentially an identical replacement door. Once the door was made (in Oregon, and shipped to a local store), Michael picked up the door and installed it immediately (in the falling snow, I might add.) From step one of assessing what needed to be done, to measuring, locating a manufacturer, delivering and installing the door, Michael proved to be highly resourceful, skilled and reliable. He kept in close communication during the entire process, and when it came time to hang the door, he brought with him a very professional associate and accomplished the job impeccably. I would certainly recommend hiring Michael, and I know I'll be contacting him for future work.

I met with Jimmy Soles, the owner, about installing new flooring in my Hartville ranch home. His pricing was right. but more importantly, he was very knowledgable and I was impressed enough to hire him on- the -spot. As the job progressed it unexpectedly required installing replacement under boards, dry wall repair, and custom cuts for both my newly installed Pergo XL and baseboards. No problem with any of it. And he worked on my schedule! (He worked his ass off) He has since installed a new "Disposall" and fixed my fence's gate He is scheduled to return early next year to advise me on a patio enclosure and some electrical issues. I would, and will hire Jimmy for all of my property repair needs. (ask for a senior discount)

I have hired Dave for several projects. He has hung siding on my garage, laid Allure flooring in my bathroom, living room and a bedroom. He installed a new bathroom sink and vanity. He has painted most of the rooms in my home and has done some landscape work as well. Dave is very professional. Completes projects in a timely manner, and is meticulous about detail and cleanup. I recommend Dave to anyone looking for handyman projects. Will hire him again for sure!!

We hired Chuck and his crew to remodel our kitchen. This was a major remodel as a load bearing wall was removed and everything else was completely gutted. We had new cabinets, counter tops, flooring, plumbing and electric installed. They arrived every day on time and put in a full days work. After every work day they cleaned up and put all of their tools away. We really appreciated their tidiness. No sub-contractors were used...the same four guys were here the whole time. That was one of the main draws in hiring them. Their work is excellent. Everything start to finish was done correctly and with the utmost care. You can tell they take great pride in their work. We could not be happier with the finished product. If we ever decide to hire a contractor in the future, Barnes Sklare Remodeling will be it. I would definitely recommend them to our family and friends.

Rod was chosen from five bidders, all of whom were close in their estimates. Unlike the others, he initially mentioned renovation options ( both interior and exterior ) that had not been considered in the planning. No one else "thought outside the box". This was a complete renovation of a house to prepare it for sale: new flooring throughout, new padding and carpeting throughout, much repair work of damaged wood and walls, a wood-burning fireplace rehab; installation of new vanities, sinks, mirrors, med. cabinets and accessories, 5 new ceiling fans, power washing, painting shutters and repair and painting of storage shed, caulking around foundation, installation of all new interior and exterior doors. You can see that the job was all-encompassing and Rod was up to the task and did some unique repairs along the way. The only two detours included four dead electrical outlets that still need to be repaired by an electrician and the time frame ran more than 3 and 1/2 months. If you are willing to be patient, Rod will do a bang-up job for you. He would text pictures of items for my approval before he would make a purchase. He provided me with a receipt for everything that was required for the job. This was an $11,000+ investment, but the new owner is not going to have any headaches once they move in. I hope to hire Rod again for work at my own residence and would comfortably make a referral to anyone in need of his services.

If you are currently looking for a flooring professional -- look NO further!!! Geary and his team are absolutely amazing!! We had our living room, dining room, hallway original hardwood floors (and trim boards) refinished and added/matched hardwood flooring to our kitchen as well. The final transformation is beyond what words can describe. From start to finish, Geary and his team were punctual, extremely professional, informative, and CLEAN! I could not have asked for a more perfect experience. Geary goes above and beyond what is expected of the job ~ They even finished ahead of their anticipated schedule. We have already had friends request his information for work on their homes. This is the company to hire. Thank you Geary for making our home a dream come true!!

David tiled a wall for me. He contacted me right away. Came over quickly for an estimate. Kept in touch while traveling to our home to let us know there was traffic, so he might be later than expected. On top of all that, he did an excellent job. The tile looks beautiful. he cleaned up after himself and the price was more than fair. Great work ethic. Would definitely recommend and will use again. Thank you, David.

The best recommendation that can be given any company is if you use them multiple times. I have had Tom do multiple upgrades to my houses over the years. What is unique about Tom is that he not only can do the install but he can do the design also. The kitchen that is on the website is ours. Tom listened to what we wanted in a kitchen and came up with the design for us. He has remodeled our master bath and second bath and installed our tile floors. In our previous house he remodeled our kitchen, installed our wood floor and designed and built our deck. I am very pleased with the work he has done for us over the years and would not hesitate to recommend him for any remodeling job someone might have.

My wooden floor was all scratched up from my dog, Pebbles, who just passed away in March. Victor's came and gave me the most beautiful off-white carpet and i'm complimented on it everytime someone comes to my home. I was greeted with the best customer service and they even sat with me and had tea for a bit. I've referred this business to a few collegues of mine and they all have had great experiences! Definitely will be back in touch for my bathroom flooring to be redone.

I had laminate flooring installed. It was a great experience. The installers were awesome. They were hardworking, friendly perfectionist. My floors are absolutely stunning. They also clean up after themselves and leave everything showroom ready. I left these men in my home alone and they were trustworthy and took pride in their work. Also, the salesman pulled no punches and stayed in my budget. He really took his time and made sure he explained the installation, material, and how long it would take for the job to be completed. This is a platinum company.

D&J flooring did an amazing job installing new hardwood in my house. They saved me after another installer canceled last minute. I'm a very picky person and D&J's attention to detail was right in line with my expectations. Not only are they incredibly professional and talented, but they helped me with a few projects I was working on by myself. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

They tore up all of our old flooring, laminate, tile, and carpet. They worked very efficiently and cleaned up the work area better than I had anticipated. Derek is fantastic to work with. I went on to hire him for some trim carpentry work, which I am also very happy with and will use him in the future for all of our home improvements projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
