I'm a true believer in doing my "homework" prior to hiring a contractor to work on my home. Even then, its possible to make a mistake. I made a mistake in my recent decision to hire a company to take down my two fifty foot Ash trees. I won't mention their name out of respect to them. They were hard workers, however, after six days on the job, it was obvious they had neither the equipment nor the manpower required. I called Jeremiah at Hess Tree Company and told him of my urgent need to have the botched job completed. He showed up the next day and gave me a more than fair estimate. His crew was professional, thorough, polite, and knew exactly what they were doing. One of my trees was close to the road which required teamwork, precision and traffic control in order to down it away from power lines. I was quite impressed. Bottom line: This decision is a "no brainier". Hire Hess and you can just move on to the next project and this will be done well and at a great price.

I was very pleased with the work that they did clearing out overgrown shrubs/trees that had encroached on my driveway. Frank came out and gave me a good estimate, got the work done on the day he said he would and cleaned everything up before finishing. Very pleased with his work and will definitely use them again.

John is a super nice guy and very professional. I did not need to manage him at all. He came when the lawn needed mowing, whether we were home or not. He is a perfectionist and made the lawn look fantastic! The trimming was also flawless and he even blew the grass clippings out of the flower beds and off the driveway and walkway. John is easy to reach via cell and was flexible to rearrange his schedule to accommodate me a couple times this summer when I hosted an event at my home. I highly recommend Ez lawn an landscape. John does a great job at a reasonable price!

Although I did not hire Craig, that was not his fault, there were extenuating circumstances on my end. Craig was great about coming to the house promptly and providing me with solutions and quotes. Would recommend somebody contacting Craig for their future landscaping needs.

I cannot say enough good things about GreenBoys landscaping! Bo was great to work with and was very professional, punctual, and provided recommendations that greatly transformed my front yard. Bo was very committed and dedicated to his work and the end result was spectacular. GreenBoys (Bo) was always available to answer any questions or concerns I had, and always kept me updated on the project so that I never was wondering or guessing on how the progress was going. He clearly communicated if there was a schedule change and always informed me of the next step of the project. He is awesome at what he does, and it shows in the final results. The entire GreenBoys crew was very professional, also. They left the work site clean at the end of each day and were always friendly and courteous. Their skills are great; as it is evident in the work that they do. I cannot stress enough how happy I am with the final result of the yard. It was amazing to see the concept evolve in to the final product. The final result is amazing! There was an initial estimate of price to be paid and the amount paid was well within reason of the estimate. Everyone who has seen the yard since Bo and GreenBoys have finished is amazed at how it looks.

I contracted with Mark Koeninger and his company in the fall of 2015 to build a covered outdoor living area and the rear of my existing home. The project was completed in the spring of 2016 after I asked them to pause the construction during the holidays and cold temperatures. Mark and his company KPS Architecture and Landscape worked with me with the beginning drawings and plans and provided some very good advice that would make my outdoor living area very unique and have a professional finish. With any large project there were decisions and changes made by me the homeowner but working with KPS on these changes was a good experience. The crew working daily on my project were very professional and were very respectful of my property and maintaining a clean appearance throughout the completion of the project. They were very open to suggestions and were very thorough when explaining the timing and tasks still needing completion to keep the project on track. I will end by saying my outdoor living area and I only met but exceeded my expectations that I envisioned when breaking ground. My neighbors and family have also praise the design and craftsmanship. I have and would again recommend KPS Architecture & Landscape to friends and family. Thank You!!

Jared is an awesome guy. He is the contractor you want to hire if you have a leveling/ grading job. Jared is skillful, honest, and patient. He will work and communicate with you while on the job to make sure your needs are met. He didn't leave until we were completely satisfied with the work he's done. I highly recommend Jared.

Big Ox Pro Lawns has delivered a beautiful landscape for our home. They took care of everything in one day. After a few days, some plants were looking weak, and I send a picture and a message and a few days later everything was replaced to match the quality of what they had delivered since day one. A great company with personable service and care. We hope to work with them next year to add some more tress to the backyard and upkeep the rest of the landscaping. :)

I had a rotted tree leaning towards my house that my neighbor and I decided we didn’t want to take down ourselves due to the risk of of it having close proximity to the house. They were very responsive and did a great job.

We built a new custom home in Ft Wright, Kentucky. After getting the interior close to finished and having our driveway poured we needed to dress up the outside. Scratch the Surface Excavating, owner Tom Audas was referred by one of our sub contractors. Tom designed and built our exterior landscaping/hardscaping and far exceeded our expectations. We built a full walkout on a hillside. Scratch the Surface excavated and installed a beautiful rock path from the back corner of the house to the front opposite corner of the house (130 feet) The rocks are enormous and fit together beautifully. He installed 20+ steps out of rock like they were cast for the application. Except they are real rocks! The back of our house was the one area that we didn’t have a clue how to handle. Scratch the Surface Excavating also did all of our grading, seeding, and sod applications. Tom also rerouted our sch 35 footer drains and ran the daylight pipes in the back of our house to make the area workable. Scratch the Surface Excavating is a class act!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
