I have been very happy working with Laura on my remodel project. She created a very prompt and professional design and presented it to me in detail. It is nice to work with someone that stays on top of their projects, keeps deadlines and is an excellent communicator. Extremely excited to complete my first project with Laura so we can move on to the next one!

Outsourced Soirée catered for my wedding shower. From the very beginning Veronica and her staff went above and beyond, personalizing not only food choices, but tables linens, decor and overall ambience. The staff was friendly and extremely eager to please- going well beyond their duties. They assisted in set up, break down and clean up of the event. Our home and kitchen were under construction, outsourced soirée didn't miss a beat even in the midst of the chaos! I had an outstanding experience with this company and plan to use them moving forward. I would highly recommend their services!

Joann helped me decorate my entire home. She helped me go shopping and basically did whatever she could to help me even beyond what was expected of her. I am still planning on using her for holidays and when I decide to revamp a little. .As far as I am concerned she was excellent and I was 100% satisfied.

Working with Jenifer and the Metropolitan Design Group was the best business decision we have ever made. She was with us throughout the entire process from pre-renovation site work, through the entire renovation, all the way til the last picture was hung on the wall. We could not have been happier with our outcome and how involved she made us feel with every decision. We have received so many compliments from patrons over the past 7 years. She took our business and building from average to outstanding! We highly recommend spending the money and working with a professional designer and decorator when it comes to your business, or even your home.

I needed a Christmas gift for my husband and I just told Kim of ShowMe Purpose that he liked Ohio State University items and she designed a very nice plaque with the OSU Buckeyes on it and it was a hit! It was ready way before Christmas and it was very inexpensive. It's so nice to have someone creative design personalized items just for you and it's wonderful to be able to support small business owners as well. That's very important!

I could NOT have redone my 1980's house without Susan. She was extraordinary. It was a huge job and she made it seem effortless. And, most importantly, kept me calm. My husband and I did not agree on everything, and Susan was an expert at compromise. She took me from flowered, busy wallpaper (very 80's) to a beautiful, neutral decor. We just redid the kitchen and I could not be happier. I highly recommend Susan for your design needs. Very professional. AND, has excellent taste!!

Per my request, kelly worked to use as many of my current furnishings & decor items as possible to do a complete makeover for 2+ rooms. In the end only purchased new cabinet hardware for approx $20 and a new floor lamp for $99. End result looked liked brand new rooms!! I highly recommend Kelly and will definitely be calling on her for my next home makeover!!!

Choye Services provided her catering service to an exclusive members only event that my team invited guests for a last minute decision on very short notice! Choye Services asked jus a few small questions as to what did I "think" was needed and what was required and then asked if they could "accent" the event based on their expertise and I agreed! Needless to say, the meeting event turned out to be Super-outstanding with NOT only very attractive decor, but with upheld professional services and quality exceeding expectations!!

I have worked with Rosalie for the past almost 10 years at the Cleveland Orchestra Store and the Blossom Bandwagon Gift Shop where she has helped me set up the store displays each month as new products arrive and also do a large display window for me on a regular basis. Her attention to detail is amazing and she has the ability to make aging inventory look great and interesting by constantly changing around our display areas as new products arrive. It is very challenging at times especially when we get closer to the holiday season and there are multiple trees to decorate and we have a set theme for each one. I cannot tell you how many compliments we receive on our lovely displays and her skills at organizing and coordinating each are a true testament to her eye for design and creativity. I cannot say anything negative regarding working with her and would strongly encourage anyone who is looking for a perfectionist to contact her right away. She is amazing!

I hired Stephanie when we were putting our house on the market. While I think I'm pretty good at decorating, I needed someone to come in a "brush it up" a little. She used mostly items we already had and made our house look outstanding!! We were so pleased with the results that we hired her to help decorate our new house!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
