I must start by saying I am very pleased with the work Erik Gordon (E.R.I.A) completed for me and the outstanding service he provided me. Here’s the story. AT&T installed cable service at my home. While doing so the installer hit an electrical wire going into my kitchen and knocked out power to several plugs. AT&T had no problems agreeing to pay for the damages however; it was my responsibility to find an electrician and provide the necessary documentation to support the damage claim. This incident happened the week before Thanksgiving 2015. I had a tough time finding an electrician. I actually contacted several prior to finding Erik. No one was interested in the job either because of the upcoming holiday season or the AT&T third party damage claim process I had to go through to get the job paid for. When I found Erik, he was a Godsend. Erik not only gave me a fair estimate (which I forwarded to AT&T’s damage claims department), he also stuck by my side throughout the entire process. Erik spoke to the claims department on my behalf, explaining the work that needed to be done and why. He went way beyond my expectations and I can’t say enough about how grateful I am to him and his crew. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Erik to anyone that is looking for a reliable, professional and hardworking electrician.

As a contractor by trade I expect professionalism, honesty and quality when I hire someone to work at my home.Jimmy not only met all those qualifications but surpassed them. After receiving outrageous estimates from some of the major name garage door companies Suffield garage doors was next, after meeting Jimmy he was hired before he even gave me a price (which was extremely more reasonable)Jimmy was quick, clean and kept his word on the price,no surprises.I could not be happier with my new garage doors and the quality of work and service I received.Great overall experience and 5 stars for Suffield garage doors -Matt Fela

We recently had our kitchen cabinets painted by D3 Services and had a great experience! The guys were very professional and responsive throughout the entire process -- from getting an estimate and following through on the job. The entire project took 5 days (as planned) and we couldn't be happier with the results! They handled everything from purchasing the paint and products, to masking, removing the doors and hardware/hinges, spraying all paint (no brushing or rolling which was a huge plus for us!), and the reinstallation and clean-up. They were incredibly thorough, very polite, quiet, hard workers, on time and easy to deal with. We'd definitely recommend them to friends and family and consider them for future projects. The coolest part was that the same night they finished the job, they sent us a before/after video of the entire process to share! Keep up the good work guys!

Matthew was such a great find for our plumbing needs! He was very quick to respond, flexible to our schedule and very informative while working on our kitchen issues. He gave an amazingly fair price and it was worth every penny for the amount of time he spent making sure the job was done right but also for the amount of time he spent educating us on what he was doing and how to avoid further problems. We will definitely be recommending him to our friends and family and will utilize him and his skills for the future.

Sherry and I wanted to let you know that we are thrilled with our new kitchen. We were impressed with your professionalism, vision, and work ethic throughout the project. It was amazing to see you take a lot of vague concepts from Sherry and turn them into beautiful realities. Sherry is delighted with the hand crafted wine rack along with the installation of the cabinets. We both really appreciate your attention to detail with the finishing of the cabinets, countertop, tiled backsplash, and new around the room bulkhead with recessed accent lighting. I know the demolition of the old kitchen area was cumbersome, but you didn’t skip a beat in moving the project forward as planned. Personally, I am amazed at the transformation of extending the original kitchen into the old dining room and tying everything together for a beautiful eat in kitchen area. I have to admit that I did get a little nervous about tying in the hard wood floor but it was delivered as promised; beautiful, durable, and with any noticeable transition. I was always amazed that you never let a problem halt our progress and overly amazed with your ingenuity in finding solutions. Les, you truly offer a complete package when it comes to professionalism, craftsmanship, ingenuity, work ethic, and commitment. Thank you again.

Painted entire house, upstairs and downstairs. 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms. Eric and Joseph were very easy to work with. Eric came to the house ahead of the project to discuss color scheme (insightful, art background). He was quick to gather supplies, schedule the project and make adjustments as needed. For example, the paint store provided the wrong color for the large combined space of living and kitchen area. I was traveling and returned to see they finished about 75% of the space with the wrong color. Eric went straight to the store, had the issue corrected, returned with the correct paint and got started again. They worked on Saturday to keep the schedule on track. Every morning, someone was there early and as soon as we opened the door, the work was started. They fixed small little spots that my husband and I noticed and offered to come back to address anything in the 2 weeks after the job was finished. Unfortunately, even though we requested Zero VOC paint (because of my allergies and migraines), the base was Zero VOC, but the colorants were not. The fumes were difficult to have in the house as the paint dried. Eric and Joseph tried their best to use fans to direct the fumes outside. I have used actual Zero VOC paints in the past and they can be special-ordered and if I had to do the project again, I would definitely consider hiring Heritage but I would ensure we used Zero VOC paints.

Brian did our kitchen by putting up new cabinets, installing a new dishwasher and sink along with new countertops and over the stove microwave. As an Electrician he moved and added some GFCI outlets and switches which made it more convenient for the renovation. His co workers Brad and Wade were great with helping out! I recommend Brian and his co workers for any work you may need. Very down to earth and very nice guys! Ben and Andrea Scott

The best recommendation that can be given any company is if you use them multiple times. I have had Tom do multiple upgrades to my houses over the years. What is unique about Tom is that he not only can do the install but he can do the design also. The kitchen that is on the website is ours. Tom listened to what we wanted in a kitchen and came up with the design for us. He has remodeled our master bath and second bath and installed our tile floors. In our previous house he remodeled our kitchen, installed our wood floor and designed and built our deck. I am very pleased with the work he has done for us over the years and would not hesitate to recommend him for any remodeling job someone might have.

We had a shower leak that damaged the ceiling in the kitchen. Jack was able to stop the leak in the shower due to bad grout/caulk. The ceiling needed to be patched, re textured and repainted. The damaged areas are now perfectly matched to the rest of the ceiling. Jack was very professional and organized. He took the time to protect the floors and furniture and clean up was 100%. Highly recommended!

I could NOT have redone my 1980's house without Susan. She was extraordinary. It was a huge job and she made it seem effortless. And, most importantly, kept me calm. My husband and I did not agree on everything, and Susan was an expert at compromise. She took me from flowered, busy wallpaper (very 80's) to a beautiful, neutral decor. We just redid the kitchen and I could not be happier. I highly recommend Susan for your design needs. Very professional. AND, has excellent taste!!

LAWRENCE construction & Remodeling is the best!  2 years ago I used this company to remodel my 1927 home.  James Lawrence, and his team of professionals did a phenomenal job on doing a complete remodel of the house including new/refinishing hard wood floors, new electrical, new plumbing, bedrooms, bath, load bearing wall removal and a custom made kitchen. This work included obtaining city permits and regular inspections - this was all handled by LAWRENCE Construction & Remodeling. They were extremely professional and efficient and the project was finished on time and on budget.   Fast forward to the present.  When I had some plumbing issues, LAWRENCE Construction & Remodeling responded promptly and were extremely helpful. They back up their work and their customer service is exceptionally excellent.  They sent out a certified plumber and electrician within days of my request and fixed the issue immediately. The quality of their work and their customer service is first rate!  I will definitely be using them again for any remodeling jobs in the future.   I highly recommend this company and will be making referrals to friends, family, and co-workers.

Contractor did not follow through with what he was committed to do and also over charged me based on quote under the guise that he had to "store" my items, which is not true. He also failed to listen to what I wanted and issues that I had. For example, I now have a cabinet that I wanted doors only to and had 5 drawers and now, to add to that, the door to the cabinet has been discontinued. I paid for MANY MANY things that were never delivered to me, and paid for MANY MORE things that I didn't need. I paid Ikea $4,200, of which I returned over $700 in items and had to purchase over $500 more (and still do not have a door for a large cabinet). Vendor failed to even stand by his responses to emails. I wanted to pay cash for the services rendered and he demanded credit card because he didn't want his son to have the cash? Just odd all around, I am sure there are better options out there. Luckily, the local Ikea has been more than gracious to address the issues I have had. If not for that I would have sued this contractor for breach and would have clearly won based on over 40 pages of email communications trying to get him to fix the issues. Don't walk, run, from this contractor.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
