Kareem visited us this morning and did an awesome job. We had some yellow jackets in our back yard and surprisingly enough, we had some under the siding of our home. He found them and hopefully took care of all those little buggers. I highly recommend RE Pest & Mold Remediation Services to take care of any of your needs. They were efficient and extremely helpful!! Here's hoping we don't need to call them back for anything, but if I do...I am told there is a warranty covering us. THANK GOD!!

We had SafeHouse come into our business to test our air and some desk surfaces. We had a rash of illness going around and thought maybe it was environmentally caused. While testing some mold was discovered on the back of a couple areas where the wallpaper was coming loose. Though the air test came back okay, and the mold was not the cause of the illnesses, we still needed to take care of these areas. Once work began more and more damaged and moldy drywall was found. Those of us that were working with SafeHouse at the start of the project were unaware that many years ago there were a couple of pipes that burst and flooded half the office. This is what led to the damaged, moldy drywall. SafeHouse was very professional in handling the clean up, kept us informed during each step in the process and worked with us so we could continue to operate our business with minimal interruption. I would highly recommend SafeHouse for both businesses and homeowners.

We had a white mold problem in the utility room in our basement. Emailed MP and receive a prompt reply and service. The service was done promptly at a fair price. The area was cleaned up nicely and I would use MP again if needed.

Gil did a good job assessing problem areas in a new home that I was purchasing. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. The reason I give 4 stars and not 5 is because when I called to book the mold inspection I specified that I wanted testing done on the entire home that would be sent to the lab and I was quoted a specific price for that and then when Gil arrived he gave a VERY different price because he stated the price she gave me was for one area not the whole home. But then he assured me that the lab testing wasn't needed and pointed out problem areas to me. I was satisfied with his assessment although I ultimately did not end up having him remediate the problem. But I would use his service again if needed.

This is going to be long, prepare yourself… I’ll try and keep the “history” short: 1) Move into the house after remediation was supposed to have taken care of: a. Mold in the attic b. Clogged soffits c. Bathroom vent being vented directly into the attic Fast forward 6.5 years: 1) We have water getting into our bedroom and I crawl into the attic to find the source (the vent stack 2) I notice that the ceiling is rather black and suspect the either the mold has returned or the original company didn’t do such a good job of removing the mold previously 3) I fix the leaking vent pipe myself but I call out a roofer to get their opinion of the situation in the attic 4) He agrees we have poor ventilation and need to remediate the mold and we discuss various items on a hit list of things to fix I begin researching and learn a lot more than I ever expected about attics, mold and proper ventilation. We decide that the obvious first step is remediation and then fixing the smaller (and bigger) jobs. My wife does a quick search for our city and ‘mold removal’. I am expecting to call several places and have several visits (I like doing at least three) with several quotes/estimates following. I make my first call at around 7pm in the evening and I speak with “Ed” at ABC Mold Removal. It’s immediately apparent that Ed knows his stuff and their business. After I hang up with him not only do I have a verified handle on the research I’ve been doing myself I have an estimate in my email well below what I was expecting to hear, a complete rundown of what will happen when they come to our home, an even better idea of the various items I need to fix/update to KEEP the mold from coming BACK as well as two of the items off my list included in the estimate – namely: 1) pulling back the blown in insulation from clogging my soffits which was, obviously, never done when we moved in and 2) correctly venting the bathroom vent to the outside and not just up to the ridge vent. He also recommends I look into updating the ridge vent we do have as these have been updated and improved dramatically since the one we have was installed. I like the quote and agree with all that needs done and I call him back later and schedule a date. He says he can be out within about 3 days which actually was too soon for us and we moved that out about 7 days (on a Saturday). Fast forward once again to the day of the job: 1) They arrive on time. They stated between 7:30am and 8:00am and they arrive a few minutes before 8am. a. At this point, I have to mention two things that struck me: 1) they greet me professionally and call my Mr. Strauss even though we’ve already exchanged first names. This continues throughout the day and 2) they remove their shoes. No prompting, no booties, no asking if they should … they just did it. All day long, in and out to bring in equipment. Some people might be saying, “well, they should.” I would tend to agree if it weren’t for the fact that I’ve had work done on my house previously – cable, front door, basement heater, etc. None of them just came in and removed their shoes. None. 2) Their setup takes about an hour and half and includes putting plastic down in the room where the access hatch is (our daughter’s closet), plastic down the hallway they have to come in and out of and a triple plastic barrier at the entrance into the room. They also close up the whole house fan and then, at long last, look into the attic to see what it’s like. a. I was leery up to this point that they had yet to ever set eyes on my attic and the condition it was in. But they knew their stuff and came completely prepared for anything. They said it didn’t look bad and estimated that they’d be out by 1 or 2 in the afternoon. (spoiler: they were leaving my drive at 2:30pm after cleaning up completely and having a small chat with me – and, of course, getting paid). In speaking with Ed later, during our chat, he told me that ABC Mold Removal has been doing this kind of work for thirteen (13) years and there’s a reason for that: they do a fantastic job! The black, stained attic looked like new wood. The soffits? I could see daylight through them when I went up. The bathroom fan? Vented completely to the outside. Steve – the second person on the job – did this work even though it was fairly cold out and there was some snow on the roof too. Did I mention Steve comes from a family of 5 roofers? Did I mention that Ed came prepared for anything? The only thing we have left to do is to weatherproof any heat exchange points into the attic from the house and to install a new ridge vent (going with Ed’s suggestion of Shingle Vent II after watching a video online of how well it works). So, in a nutshell? Highly, highly, highly recommend Ed and ABC Mold Removal to anyone who has the unfortunate need for this service (which is probably more of us than we realize).

I am selling my house and had to have it checked for mold in the attic. They were right on time to check the attic, found mold and two days later they went back to the house to take care of the mold. I was impressed with their personal kindness, expertize and ability to explain how they were going to rectify the situation. It was taken care of quickly and the clean up after was expertly handled. The price was very reasonable as well.

I really like the integrity with this company. They educated me through each of my estimates and explained to me what I actually needed and what was extra. Wasnt sure how I felt about a Mold company vehicle parked in my driveway for my nosy neighbors to see. But then I saw the unmarked van! Provided me the level of discretion I needed , and the basement looks & smells masterful. Headache gone! Thanks guys!!

He went out of his way twice to come out to the house to complete the inspection due to forseeable rain and to also get our radon test results back quicker. He took his time and did a thorough inspection. He explained everything in detail and left us with a handy guide and CD for home maintenance. Very nice guy!

I made my decision to hire Duraclean after speaking with Carla. I was quickly contacted after submitting my Thumbtack request online. I had other quotes with a few other companies, but I clearly made up my mind after she came over, thoroughly explained the procedure and what to expect, and backs up the procedure with a warranty. I felt good knowing that the mold was going to be taken care properly. The tech that came and did the work (2 thumbs up too!), was pleasant, explained the steps he was going to do, and was very friendly! I cannot say enough about my experience with Carla and Duraclean! I will HIGHLY recommend them to anyone that needs their services! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you did - from start to finish!

I bought a bank owned house last April. The roof was leaking which caused mold growth in the attic. My contractor Paul did an amazing job: explained the cause and how to treat it and what to expect after treatment. He is honest, patient and answered all my question in a professional manner. To my surprise, in addition to mold treatment, the company also provides whole house renovation service. I hired Paul as my general contractor for all my house project. I am very pleased! Thanks a lot, Paul!

Scott was knowledgeable and professional when I called him. Although he was unable to make the 1st appointment we scheduled, he rescheduled with our property manager and came back to do the inspection. His estimate was very comprehensive and the price was reasonable. I would recommend him.

We just purchased a new home and the home inspector thought there might be mold. After getting 3 estimates we found Douglas Kern and Mold Protection Services, Inc. Their proposal was the best priced, offered a warranty on their work, and verified everything with testing. We even had them clean our furnace ducts and bio-wipe down our entire home. The house is so clean, smells great, the carpets look brand new. I would highly recommend Mold Protection Services, Inc.!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

Can mold grow behind drywall?

Mold can grow behind drywall, in your attic, in the basement, under floors — mold can grow anywhere. The key to controlling mold is controlling moisture and water. If your home has been exposed to excessive water due to flooding or heavy rains, if you have an old home with leaky pipes, or if you live in an area with high humidity, you need to be vigilant about mold. Mold is most easily identified by sight. You may see blooms of mold on furniture, on walls, or along the floor. If you can spot mold, you probably don’t need to test for it and can save on mold inspection costs and direct your energies towards mold remediation. But if you’re not certain, you may need a pro to help you determine whether you have hidden mold. Scent and illness are two potential signs of hidden mold. You may smell anything from a musty earth scent to a foul stench, and you may experience respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritation, problems with your nervous system, or aches and pains. The national average cost of mold inspection and testing is $250-$300.

How long does it take to get rid of mold in a house?

You can never completely remove mold from your house; a small number of mold spores will always exist indoors and are a natural and helpful part of our world. However, if water or moisture is left unchecked inside your home and mold begins to colonize, it can pose a serious health risk. Mold remediation can quickly and safely remove a mold infestation from your home or office. Depending on the size of your problem, mold remediation might take anywhere from one to seven days (or more) to wipe out the major sources of mold in your home.

Mold growths (colonies) can establish within 24-48 hours, so it is important to act immediately if you have a water spill or leak — especially if you live in a hot or humid climate. If you are past the point of DIY and need professional help, mold remediation teams will come to your location, assess the extent of the mold problem, identify and rectify all water leaks and sources of dampness, identify all mold sources (both visible and hidden), use specialized equipment to contain and prevent migration of mold spores, safely remove contaminated materials, treat infested areas with approved antimicrobial sprays, dehumidify and dry the appropriate areas, and seal areas as needed.
