We hired Abby Lane Dog Training after we got our newest addition. Both dogs were in need of obedience training, while we as a family needed to better understand how to properly discipline our dogs, so that we could have well-mannered dogs. After 6 weeks our dogs are well-behaved, especially in social settings with people outside of our immediate family. We would recommend Tom & Kathleen, hands down!

Kerry has been a sympathetic, empathetic, and thoughtful professional since my first phone call with her in the spring of 2013. I have utilized all of the Darwin Dogs offerings (selection, people training, dog behavior assessment, pack walks) and would, withoutany hesitation, recomend Kerry Stack. The first dog Kerry helped us with blessed and changed our family forever. I am eternally grateful and indebted to you for your support Kerry. My toddler with struggles would not be the person he is today if Alley Girl was not there for him. Thank you. Now, Max is teaching me many lessons , and Kerry, three seasons latter, is still expanding the way I think. Finally, when it was necessary Kerry interacted with my vet. He was throughly impressed with her professionalism and knowledge, and stated that I was working with the right person. Of course, I already knew that.

My dog was very receptive to her and she worked with the dog until the dog understood what she wanted it to do. She also wrote up the protocol of the things we went over so I could continue with the training. My dog has several problems and she addressed all of them. I know it will take a while to reverse my dog's bad habits but I think we have a very good start. She even took my dog for a little walk which was great since I am unable to do that.

We chose to do boarding with training for our three dogs. We can't wait to get started with our in home training course. With 3 kids and 3 dogs it is sooooo amazing that they will come to our house. They even pick up You fur babies and bring them home when boarding (for a small fee). What a time saver that is when your trying to get everything and everyone packed for a trip.

My husband and I got our Border Collie (Isis) when he was 8 weeks old. We started training classes with Cindy soon after. Isis is almost 10 years old now.over those nine plus years we went through basic, Intermediate, clicker, canine good citizen, agility, o-gility...pretty much everything Cindy offers. The classes are fun and informative, a great bonding experience for you and your dog. Once we ran out of classes we just kept going back. Cindy is an excellent teacher and trainer. You will learn just as much as your dog if not more. Isis loves going to "school" as we call it. Just saying the word "school" to him makes his ears perk up then he dashes to the back door ready to go. Cindy makes dog training (school) something to look forward to every week. Thanks Cindy.

Having had dogs before, I had a basic understanding of the time and effort that goes into training a dog. It has been many years since our last dog and this time, training a puppy also meant training children to the same routine that we want the dog to learn and grow with. Working with Jeff has been a pleasure. He has provided me with good reminders as to how I need to approach our puppy. He has also provided me with my one-on-one training, so that I know how to instruct my wife and kids in their approach to our puppy. Having a dog in the house allows for great companionship as well as security. Having a dog that respects your authority and responds to your commands allows you to have a smooth interaction and a peaceful home!

I took my two Shiz Tu's to Diane today for grooming. They were pretty well a mess when we got there but when we were done they were beautiful. To my surprise they didn't even bark there, they were so comfortable and Diane was so calm with them. Diane kept me informed of their progress via text messages and even sent me a picture of them when they were done. I would recommend Dog Day Grooming to anyone. Teresa L.

Not only is Gayle extremely knowledgeable but she 'trains' the owners as well as the dog! Her technique is to make sure the owner understands the simplicity of the dogs mind with relatable analogies. She trained our unruly, untrained 1 yr old rescue to 'sit' within minutes and we have an entirely new approach to training thanks to her and it's working! We highly recommend Gayle for any dog training situation.

Excellent experience. Gina did a great job walking us through potty training our dogs. She really knows her stuff and the dogs relate well to her. Gina also does a great job with children. She has a former teaching background. As a result, she can really get the dog training points across to the children as well as the owners. Would highly recommend a few sessions with Gina.

Alicia is so caring about your dog, you and her work. My dog didn’t listen at all, after only 3 sessions he knew so many commands and listened so fast I couldn’t believe it. I highly reccommend working with her.

There are two things: 1) Because I am an armature trainer, I'm cheap. I negotiate per client the price. It depends on how much work needs done with a dog. 2) I won't hesitate to do some research and find out how to do something for your dog.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
