Mark delivered a very professional demeanor from the first initial conversation to the amazing video that he made for us. We were skeptical at first with using a company that we weren't familiar (mainly because we aren't from the area) but he stayed in touch, was present before his scheduled time to shoot and very personable. He made sure we felt comfortable with who we were working it. We received our video right away. Actually sooner than we expected. We are very happy with the decision to work with Mark and Coming Home Studio. It was such a pleasure!

The photo booth was a hit! People really enjoyed themselves and as a bride I loved seeing the pictures and video messages afterwards as a keepsake. Mike was very helpful all throughout the process. They made a great custom photo print for the occasion and were extremely welcoming and accommodating! Thank you Mike and Ashley for helping to make our day a success!!

I honestly can’t say enough good things about Greg. He was absolutely wonderful. We hired him about a month before our wedding, and he was so easy to work with—so nice, quick to reply and very open to hearing about what we wanted in a wedding video. The video turned out better than we could have ever imagined. He perfectly captured the joy and magic of our day and the editing was absolutely beautiful. He delivered on everything I asked for and more. I’ve literally had dozens of people tell me our video made them cry! And in my opinion Greg’s work far exceeds videos of other companies that charge far more than he does. I simply cannot recommend Greg highly enough! Hire him and you won’t regret it.

We hired Richard to do a promotional video for one of our events. He took a lot of footage and put together a great video that we use on our website to market our business. We would hire him again if we came back to that area.

Rob offered great service during our wedding day, was not intrusive and didn't interfere with any of the events throughout the day. The final video was also great and we are happy to have our special day in this medium for the rest of our lives!

Eric has all the skills. Not only can he direct a film or video, but he can manage multiple people at once, control the camera, but he does it with a bunch of passion and understanding for the people he's helping. Eric has gone above and beyond to help me launch my kickstarter project and turn my dreams into a success. (I hope!)

Noir Creative, LLC provided photography for the Kent State University Men's and Women's Chorus before their fall concert, and also recorded video. The photo quality was excellent, and Mr. Black successfully captured the student's passion for singing. The photographs are of tremendous quality, and look perfect for promotional supplements for the KSU choral department. The students also greatly enjoyed working with Mr. Black and his continuous creative ideas to make them look stellar in performance.

Matthew was extremely professional and knew what he was talking about in regards to interviewing us, lighting, and the details of the shots he was taking. He was always prepared and ready to go. He was very timely and had our video to us well before we expected it. Matthew showed great attention to detail when filming. He caught amazing shots because he was intentionally looking for them. We had fun working with Matthew and were able to laugh and enjoy the time we spent with him. Matthew was patient when I stumbled through my interview and made me feel comfortable and then in the video he pulled all my clutsy words together. The creative nature of this video is what I love the most and that he was able to take all of my ideas and make them way better than I pictured. We will forever treasure this video.

Jen and Christopher are THE BEST videographers out there! With them, I felt more like family than clients. They bring you into their home, show you the different options you have, and may even feed you! When they pick up their cameras, you can see the pure love they have for filming. But even more than that, you can see that they actually care about the wedding day, know how special it is, and want to make it the best video they've shot to date. During our pre-wedding pictures, Jen was willing to climb on rocks, kneel, and use the video camera to her advantage just to get the best footage possible to document our big day. During our ceremony, the footage is amazing. They made sure to capture every moment. Starting with walking the family in, through the bridesmaids walking up, the vows, the kiss, and walking back down the aisle. The footage in this section is everything that I ever could've dreamed of. During the reception, they made sure to capture all of my guests, as well as my husband and I, dancing our booty's off! During the whole day (but especially during the reception), they caught the amazing moments, as well as the funny ones! I happened to fall during the reception (not hard- I was fine!). Christopher made sure that my tiny slip made the blooper reel along with other hilarious moments during the day! They also conducted interviews with family and friends that I requested and Jen did a fantastic job at getting each interview. She made my family and friends feel like her family and friends. More than one person interviewed said the "interview" was more like talking to a really good friend. Overall, our wedding video is better than I could've ever imagined thanks to Jen and Christopher. They are now truly part of our family forever.

I enlisted John Aylward to take photographs of me holding a plastic zombie chicken on a couch with a chair on it, with a painting of goats in the background. I chose him because he is excellent with colors and space, as well as being creatively open-minded, and he definitely delivered. Not only did he take outstanding photos, but he also edited them in high-resolution to look even better. During the shoot, he offered suggestions such as talking to the chicken or sitting certain ways on the couch, and moved around props like a chess board to ensure the fung-shui lined up properly. I was lucky enough not to Be charged for his work, but I imagine he will be paid quite a bit for his photography talents in the future. Good luck John and thanks! -Zaq Pariah, music person

We hired Mike to film our sororities' recruitment video. From start to finish, Mike was in direct communication, catering to our wants and visions for the project while offering creative and thoughtful ideas. He will find a way to tailor his strong, diverse skill set to accommodate your project, as he did with ours. We could not be happier with the process of creating the project with Mike and the end product. Thank you Mike!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

      • Package 1: $1,400
        • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
        • Two cameras with audio equipment.
        • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
        • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
      • Package 2: $1,800
        • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
