Mike did a great job washing my second-story slider window plus screen. He also cleaned out my gutters, which were very full of debris from a pine tree. Mike arrived early to the appointment. Very pleased!

This was a big project. We live in a ranch house with cathedral ceilings in living room. We contracted for painting of: Ceilings in LR, DR, kitchen, hallway to guest room, hallway going downstairs. Walls painted were LR, both hallways and kitchen. Not the DR because wallpapered. Wallpaper in kitchen below the chair rail was removed too and a border in the LR. Also, 11 doors were painted, the side shown, not inside. He also patched a hole in the front steel door and painted that and the wood around the garage and front threshold at No Charge. However, the wood trim will most likely need to be redone next Summer properly; sanding first then painted, but for the quick coverup was good. He buys his paint from Sherwin Williams at contractor pricing at $40 a can and we had to pay $494 in materials. I asked for all left over paint and a drop cloth that we paid for. I also asked for the receipts too. They started on a Tuesday and concluded by Thursday afternoon which pleasantly surprised us. Our last professional job was done in a week but they were much slower. In our last professional paint job, we bought Behr paint at Home Depot, 5 gallons of the same color. No ceilings were done then. I think that paint bought 12 years ago was $89? Mike likes Sherwin Williams and I'm glad they are a Cleveland company, but we'll see how it stands up in the next 10 years. We are a Behr paint family. The finish of the paint is supposed to be washable but it feels more flat but it isn't. We have two messy English Springers too. Always wear and tear in the home. We did have a choice to use Behr as well but went with his professional recommendation. The paint job was excellent and the reason I gave a 4 star versus 5 was because from the clean up sanding dust from patching nail holes and other larger holes. I had to clean all the chair rails and baseboards and little flicks of paint all over the wood floors and other floors. Just flicked them off with my nail. I just had carpets cleaned before they came and his helpers would walk over the hallway carpet without a runner on the carpet. I was freaking out a little and had to ask them to put down a drop cloth. They moved a curio cabinet, again not Mike, but his helper, and it got gouged on the bottom. I will do the touch up myself with stain. The paint on the ceilings, the walls and the doors were excellent. Mike caulked the window he painted too. So overall, it would be 4-1/2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ if that was an available choice. I would hire again.

We hired Chuck and his team to install a window in our new home (where there was no window to begin with). I cannot say enough about how happy we are with this decision. His installation team did an amazing job with the installation -- from both the inside and the outside of the home, there is no evidence of their work cutting the window opening, etc. The window itself is high quality. And our brainstorming with Chuck over size and location of the window resulted in the outcome I had dreamed up -- tons of natural light and added aesthetic appeal to our home. 5 out of 5 stars for this remodeling team. Highly recommended.

The project went great. We did the home and garden show and had actually agreed to purchase windows from one of the larger companies in Northeast Ohio after sitting through numerous pitches at our kitchen table. Each of the company’s presented basically the same window with the same technology but at various different prices. Many of them often used gimmicks where the more you talked the more that the discounts somehow appeared. The process would take hours when at the end of the day all we needed was the quality window, a quality install and a good price. After agreeing the night before with this other company, we had three days to back out with no questions asked. I always research every possible option and had seen something about First Glass and sent him a message that next morning. Within 3 hours Tim was in our house. What struck us right away was that Tim was very straight forward. He gave us a ballpark estimate before he came over and then stuck to it when he got here. There were no gimmicks he asked us questions about what we had come to him wanting and he shared his opinions. He warranties his work and uses the same windows as the other big box suppliers. He did all his measurements and then told us to take our time with our decision. He was in and out within 30-40 min compared to roughly 2-3 hours with the other suppliers. The rest of the day my wife and I talked it over. Every time we had a question Tim was very responsive in answering them and providing us with as much information as he could. We ended up coming to the agreement to go with Tim because we felt more comfortable with him as a person, he was able to give us everything we wanted, and he was affordable. Upon calling him to tell him that we were going to go with him, he had known that we had signed with another company and basically told us to make sure that this is what we wanted and that we could have as much time as we needed. He just wanted to make sure that we were comfortable with our decision. That only made us feel more comfortable with our decision. A few weeks later Tim and 2 others of his crew got to our house at 8 am and had installed 10 windows by 1. Throughout the install they were very open to questions that I had about the install process and were very friendly and willing to help. I even had a window and door that they weren’t replacing that I asked their opinion on and they happily gave it. The windows installed make the house look completely different. We could not be happier with our decision. Overall this was a very good process and we would suggest anyone who is seriously considering windows to save themselves the trouble and simply call Tim at First Glass. Thanks again!!

Called Bob at Sealrite, brought him the window even though he had stated he could come out to the home and measure it - will have it installed in less than 1 week if the manufacturer gets their part completed on time. Great guy, great service

I contacted RightMan Renovations to put new siding on my home. As a woman and a first time home buyer I was a bit nervous. Randy talked me through the whole process. I also liked the fact that his team was professional and courteous and did not leave a big mess when they were done. The price was affordable and when it was done my house was the prettiest in the neighborhood!! I also had a broken window which he was kind enough to replace for me at no charge. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Herb & crew did a fantastic job re-shingling my 1958 garage, which needed a total tear off. He came over on a Sunday within 24 hours of our first Thumbtack contact to give me an estimate, and I could tell right off that he is a very thorough person: getting out a ladder and climbing up on the roof, checking the gutters, looking at the wood from the inside of the garage, etc. His estimate was quite reasonable, and it included some wood if needed and gutter tune-up. Also, he did not try to sell me a bunch of other stuff that I did not need to get just this one job done. All of this added up to absolutely no surprises when the day came for the work to be done. His crew was extremely polite (this is very important to me) and had obviously been roofing together for a long time, evidenced as I peeked out the window a few times to watch, and saw how coordinated they were as they worked together as a team. They worked hard & efficiently, and had the job done in about 3.5 hours. Their work is clearly high quality and looks just beautiful, I am thrilled with the results. They also cleaned up after themselves *completely* - except for the pretty new roof, I can’t even tell that they were here!! Herb runs a great company, and I fully recommend them.

Jack did a fantastic job on the three home improvements I needed: painting spots on the exterior of my home, fixing a broken window and its molding, and replacing a doorknob. He has excellent communication, is very friendly and professional, and did such a great job on these projects- I am very, very happy. I highly recommend Jack for any home improvement projects you may have.

Everything about Window Universe was great! From the quote to the installation, we literally had no issues. There was no attempt at "upselling", there was no "act now or the deal is gone"... they were just very open and honest from the beginning and listened to exactly what we wanted/needed. The windows are absolutely beautiful and have made our house so much brighter! Huge thank you to Window Universe for making our first window buying experience and easy one.

I purchased a home in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland. The house and garage were condemned and scheduled to be torn down by the city. The house was a detriment to this beautiful neighborhood. Mike and his crew at MK Design Build redesigned and rebuilt the entire home. They had to replace all of the plumbing, wiring, interior walls, roof, front porch, back porch, doors, windows, and refinish the hardwood floors. MK Design Build finished this house ahead of schedule and under budget. Now this is the best looking house on the street. When the crew at MK design build refinished the house it looked and smelled brand-new. Sadly, the garage was too far gone to rebuild so Mike and his crew demolished it and hauled every piece of it away. The next project I have planned is to have MK Design Build rebuild the garage for me and we're going to turn it into a man cave! Can't wait, super job Mike.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
