I was in a real jam .... I have a newly remodeled home and have a huge whirlpool bathtub that was installed by a not so good plumber .... I could not find anyone willing to help me get it sorted and working properly ... so I placed an ad on thumbtack and within a few hours Wade had answered my distress call .... he was prompt, courteous and very knowledgeable .... and he drove all the way from Columbus to Dayton !!! long story short the problem was minor and took no time to fix ... he stayed for about 2 hours , watching my tub run to be sure the problem was solved and best of all ....he was very fair ... the quote he gave me was reasonable from the start, but when he realized the problem was minor not major he adjusted his quote to a lower price .... how cool is that .... most would stick to the price quoted and pocket the extra money .... I will keep Wade's biz card attached to the fridge and he is now my "go to guy" for any tub issues that may arise in the future ..... Hire this guy , you won't be disappointed ..... Thank you Wade and Thumbtack .... Robyn Smiley , Dayton Ohio

Danny originally came out to give me a quote for bathroom tile work. After reading his reviews I asked him to give me a quote for a drywall project in our living room. We had an electrician install can lights and I wanted to have our ceiling overlayed with drywall. Danny's quote was very reasonable and lower than other quotes for drywall I received on thumbtack. He was prompt and showed up everyday when he said he would, most days early. The guys worked quickly and cleaned up everyday before they left. I could tell they were pros and they made quick work of the 13 sheets we needed to be hung in our living room. After I painted the ceiling, their tape and joints were smooth and not visible. Ceiling looks perfect! Great find on thumbtack!

Did a great job. Job was not straightforward as the hardware was not reachable underneath the sink. But knew a way around it. And installed everything requested. Found that the new faucet was defective and was willing to stay and do it all over again with a new faucet. Thanks!

I cannot say enough about this man! With the help of Paul my house sold to the first person wo walked through the door!!! Before I put my house on the market I had a laundry list of things to do to get it "Market Ready" Paul tackled painting the interior of my entire hous nearly single handed!!! He painted almost every dore and baseboard in my house...fixed little things like anchoring air vents as well as big things like fixing my coat closet shelf and several door connectios that had worked their way loose over the years. Thanks soooooooooooo much Paul!!!

Kelsha was absolutely amazing and a true professional in his performance and personality. He installed closet doors for us that needed hardware installation as well. Not only did he do a perfect job on not so perfect door frames, he fixed an issue we had with a previous installer. He was very professional and gave us future advise on other projects we would like done. We have already talked to him about coming back to do more and are posting his business card at our HOA site. Thanks so much Kelsha!

Our project with Christopher & Company went very smoothly, and completely met our expectations. Chris was easy to deal with, and up front about cost - and was much more reasonably priced compared to other quotes we got. Patrick handled building our walk-in closet, and creating our basement bathroom from scratch. He was thoughtful, always discussed exactly what was going on, and asked us about different options before he moved forward. I would highly recommend - and will surely use them again in the future!

Do not call anyone else. This company came out on a Holiday weekend, didn't charge a fortune and provided methods for our family to save money. We only have one bathroom in our house we bought a few months ago. We contacted our Home Warranty company to repair clogged pipes. The Home warranty company was here for 3 hours and left our pipes in worse shape than when they came in. They left standing water in our tub and we couldn't flush the toilet at all!!!! On top of that they said we had roots throughout our pipes and they didn't cover that. Of course, my husband and I are feeling duped by the prior owner. Ready to call the lawyers The Service Company responded to my request on Thumbtack immediately and even answered his phone while out to dinner with his wife. They were out the next morning and was here about an hour and really fixed our clogs. The best part of all it was responsibly priced. My family will never call anyone else but the Service Company - Plumbing & Drain for all our plumbing needs.

Mid Ohio did several jobs for me. The first project was a shadowbox fence which turned out wonderful the dogs love being able to run around. Our second project was a 30 x 40 pole barn including insulation, electrical, concrete floor, and a driveway. Do to the amazing job Trent and his guys done we went ahead with a couple of smaller projects inside the house. The flooring in the living room, dining room, foyer, back hall, pantry, kitchen, half-bath, and laundry room were changed out to engineered flooring that my dogs have yet to scratch. After the floors both bathrooms were done including tiling the walls, flooring, putting in a shower, lowering a tub that the previous owner had built up so high that I needed a step stool to get into it, both vanities, light fixtures, toilets, mirrors, painting, and both exhaust fans. All the flooring looks absolutely amazing and what we wanted. Last but not least one of the most important things when remodeling is that they cleaned up the mess and I didn't have to clean anything when they left. These guys are great and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a quality job.

I had Craig finish about half our basement. The job included framing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, paint and finish work (all but plumbing). He was quick to respond with an estimate, started working on plans and permits immediately and kept at the job the entire time. I was informed of progress and next steps throughout the process. He remained flexible and provided good suggestions. Price was competitive with other contractors and quality was top notch. I would definitely hire him for another job and recommend him to others.

Daniel West Masonry & Construction Services has been VERY professional so far. I have tried several flooring installers and I’ve had trouble with each. They even recommended a place to look for our flooring called Floor & Decor. When we went shopping at this retailer, we were extremely impressed with the quality of the wood-look tile and engineered hardwood. You cannot get that type of quality at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Floor & Decor blows them out of the water with the thickness of their flooring. There is literally no bad option there, and they have very low prices that impressed us! I have not yet used them to lay the flooring down yet, but I have so much faith in them that I know they’ll do a wonderful job as they know what they’re talking about, and through other reviews I’ve read they do a wonderful job. This is how much confidence I have in this company. I would highly recommend using them for your next flooring project, and as a bonus they are very affordable!

I strongly recommend MAK Remodeling for your next project. As part of a larger initiative, I contracted MAK Remodeling to install tile floors for four rooms, tile the top of three recessed tubs and subway tile two bathroom walls. They provided a fair and reasonable price, and they were very prompt and professional, respecting established timelines and surrounding areas. They were also very friendly and considerate about cleaning up after themselves. I couldn't be happier with the experience! MAK Remodeling is a great group of individuals and a team you should consider using.

Luke Blazek extensively remodeled my badly designed master bathroom and out of date kitchen! My bathroom tub literally sat in my bedroom. Luke built a separate room for my floor to ceiling glassed in shower and new cabinets and a separate water closet for my toilet. He also built a nice sized walk in closet. I can't begin to tell you how happy I was with the end result. It far exceeded my expectations! Luke is an excellent carpenter. He does great quality of work. It is never done half way. He has great organizational skills. He started and finished the job and never left me in mess for weeks. He also remodeled my upstairs bath at the same time as well. Luke remodeled my out of date kitchen. He designed a lovely functional kitchen. It is easy to work in as well as entertain. I had awful syphots (sp) that needed to be replaced. The entire wiring of the house was in these syphots. I also had duct work issues. Luke easily took care of both of those problems without tearing up my entire house. I have beautiful kitchen that I love to spend time in every day because Luke did a lovely job of renovating a 1980's kitchen. Over the years I've had lots of work done on many of my houses. Luke is only person that I have had come back and work on my house. I trust Lukes' judgement as well as his strong work ethic. Luke does great work!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
