My first experience utilizing a tax professional, I had started a business and was very new to the world of business taxes. Josh at Fair Winds made this process painless and straightforward, always professional and incredibly helpful. The price is beyond fair for the peace of mind I experienced with Josh and the stress lifted as a result. I would recommend Josh and Fair Winds to anyone who is searching for a professional, fair, and exemplary outlet to have their taxes done.

I inherited a business from my grandparents. I had no idea how to do accounting or taxes. Ryan and his team held my hand the entire time. He came to my store and helped me sort through receipts and old documents and explained why they mattered. I can't imagine doing business without him. A total lifesaver!

She seemed to really care that you received your maximum refund. I was only surprised in that she asked minimal questions about possible income/deductions that I may have had. For example, she asked about W-2's and 1099-INT, but not 1099-DIV. She asked about my home sale and donations, but not about business expenses and moving expenses. I have always prepared my own taxes, but with many new things in 2016 I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. I suppose I expected her to ask about every possible thing I did that I may not have received a form for. I also thought she would do my local taxes, but she only does federal and state. Only other concern is that she didn't tell me what all I needed to bring (i.e. my wife's ID) ahead of time. That all said, she did do a good job and was happy to answer all of my questions from the research I did on all possible income/deductions. She was very professional.

John Fabrizio is awesome! I have been in business for 38 years, been his client for almost 10 years, and I can honestly say that he is the best accountant I've ever had! One of the things I like about John and his staff is that they understand clients like me who own rental property (John and his brothers own several properties) and have multiple business ventures. I highly recommend John and his team.

Chuck did a great job with my IRS response, netting me more than $900 refund and another $5000+ of carryover. I would like to have seen a little more responsiveness in our communication. I will consider Chuck for future tax accounting needs!

I hate doing my taxes but she made me feel really comfortable and ended up being cheaper than it would’ve been if I did TurboTax on my own

About four years ago, our accountant left just a month before the tax filing deadline approached. We tried to hire a replacement accountant to get our taxes done in time but didn’t get any responses back except one from Legacy Tax Resolution. We spoke with their consultant on the phone who promised to visit our offices and go over the files. I remember they came the very next day and helped us file the return by the end of the week. I was quite impressed by their efficiency and knowledge of the tax laws. That is when we took them on board to do our taxes regularly. The great thing about this firm is that their auditors are happy to answer queries and help us improve our record keeping which makes the whole process simpler and faster. We have been with them for four years now and would continue to use this firm for the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.
