Our first lesson was awesome, I'm very excited about continuing with Dennis. He is very professional, extremely knowledgable, prepared, and overall exactly what I wanted. If you're looking for someone who can individualize your instruction, take the time to ensure you are learning each step of the way, then Dennis is the right instructor for you.

Dennis is great to work with. I've been taking lessons with him about 3 months now and really enjoy his teaching methods. He works at your pace and customizes the lessons so you get the most out of it. Highly recommended!

About this pro

Some qualities that matter to me are reliability (I will not flake out on lessons), professionalism (I will not be under any influence or use explicit language), and openness to the student's interests. Regarding the latter, I'm not going to teach my favorite songs, or even songs I know well, to students just because it's easier. I'd rather engage a student through the music that speaks to them. Seeing students succeed. Every lesson where a student "gets it" after a long struggle, such as with a musical concept or a physical obstacle on the instrument, is a reward for both of us.

    Q & A

    • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am currently pursuing a Master's in Music Education, focusing on Jazz Pedagogy.
    • How did you get started doing this type of work?
I won't make up a grand backstory- I figured it was inevitable that I'd be teaching guitar, so I started doing it while in college. To my pleasant surprise I enjoyed it a lot, and committed myself to improving as a teacher in addition to as a musician. Stan Smith, my guitar instructor in college, was a tremendous role model and, while giving me guitar lessons, indirectly gave me amazing lessons in how to teach and shape a growing musician.
    • What types of customers have you worked with?
Typically, a lesson consists of introducing new material and revisiting old material and addressing any problems. I don't follow a set time schedule per lesson, so sometimes it's more (or all) new material and no old material, or vice versa. Additionally, I do transcribing (notating music) for clients.
Coverage Area for Hodges Music Instruction is about 30+ miles of Columbus, OH.
