Thompson Moving & Storage
About this pro
I needed two bedrooms, a table and chairs, and garage full of boxes moved from a house to an apartment, 20 minutes away. I originally went with this company, since they appeared to be less expensive than most moving companies. I still ended up paying what I would have elsewhere, because while they were supposed to be there between 8:30am and 9:00am, they did not arrive until almost 9:30, and then they finished at 12:30, but the paperwork showed that they charged until 1:00. They also did not have their own tools to dismantle the furniture, they had to use mine. They also made it clear that they were not happy about moving the boxes to the basement at the new place, so I just had them put them in the garage instead. Yes, I had more boxes than I originally stated, but I was asked to ballpark the amount. At the time, I was still packing, so I told him I had 20, but will have more, and I was unsure of the amount. I was told there was room on the truck so it wasn't a big deal, but the comments being made told me otherwise. I have used other moving companies in the past, and it has taken less time with more things to move. I felt like it took longer than it should have, and I was still charged for more time than what it actually took. The movers were friendly, and I appreciate that. Beyond that, I would not use this company again.Aug 5, 2013VerifiedMark T.'s reply
The time charged for included the travel time, which the customer was informed of at booking, and which is clearly stated on the invoice. The time starts when we leave the warehouse and ends when we return, so although we did finish at her destination at 12:30, the travel time back was half an hour, thus the charge until 1:00. Movers talk sometimes, and when there is more to do than they expect, sometimes they grumble. I wish that weren't so, but people are people. We try to estimate the cost based on what we are told. When there is more to do than expected, it naturally takes longer. Human nature being what it is, we do the best we can with what we have to work with. And while it may be so that other estimates were possibly closer on the estimated cost than what we ended up at, they also were based on the info we had, and would have certainly increased when there turned out to be more to do than expected. I do not know what the previous moves entailed, but when all the boxes go to a basement, that will always take longer than when normally distributed within the home, due to the multiple trips up and down the stairs. A 4 hr. move costs $293, certainly a value considering that many movers charge nearly twice our rate.
