I had new wood flooring installed in my kitchen as well as a small patch job in my living room. I was completely satisfied with the work; it was flawlessly executed. Including the match/patch work that after being stained, it looked like it's always been there. I fully recommend William and his team, great work and great group of guys.

Jim did a great job with our rental. He installed a new hot water tank, attached new hand rails on the front porch, and installed a new toilet and vinyl flooring in the bathroom. Along with doing great work, Jim was very knowledgable and offered a few suggestions that would save me money in the future. I would highly recommend Jim's Handyman Services.

Ed and his employee have been courteous and have done outstanding work for us. I would highly recommend him. He did dry wall work, stripped, stained, and installed baseboards and trim around windows. He sanded and applied polyurethane to our floor and painted. We're looking forward to having the living room done.

I cannot say enough about Anthony and his brother. They did an amazing job at my house installing a new kitchen floor, all tile. They put LVT down in a large laundry room, hallway and bathroom. The bathroom was a mid project request I made that he was happy to accommodate me on. Anthony picked up all my materials from the flooring store and even made a second trip when I changed my mind about the floor coloring. Anthony is very polite, respectful and clearly wants to make the customer happy. He worked very neatly, was on time everyday, cleaned everything up at the end of each day. The entire job took four days. When Anthony ran into unexpected layers of flooring where he was going to install tile, he ripped it all out without any complaint, he let me know everything that was going on everyday. I would highly recommend TJ Flooring for any flooring needs and I will personally hire them again for any future needs I have. Vivian Reyna

I recently used thumbtack looking for a laminate flooring installation service. Humberto came out and gave me an estimate for services and the project was completed within a few days after the estimate. He was very reasonable in price and the project was completed in the same day. I feel like he was very honest, and willing to go above and beyond what I expected. I would definitely recommend him and his company for projects or home repairs.

I have used The House Doctor for multiple projects: laminate flooring, crown molding, window and exterior door replacement w/ casing, refinished cabinets, ceiling fan installation, shed built from "scratch", painting and more..... Service was professional and quick. Clean-up excellent. I plan to tile the entire first floor and will definitely use The House Doctor without hesitation.

I had originally hired Trent to remove linoleum from my kitchen floor in an older home. We realized that the floor consisted of 3 sub-floors. Trent removed 2 of the sub floors which would allow for a new laminate floor to be installed. Trent was on time, courteous, and did what he said he was going to do. His experience helped make decisions easier and he was very affordable. I have now hired him to install the new flooring. Putting up plastic within the kitchen entry areas could have been done to help with the sawdust.

I called Wilson Flooring because I needed to replace about 2000 sf of flooring in a new office space and he was patient with me on the phone and asked questions about my vision for the space and what type of business it is. He arranged to meet me in the space the same day and brought with him a hardwood flooring sample board he thought would work based on our conversation. I knew right away that what he had picked was exactly what I was looking for. He then chose a carpet he felt matched nicely, and was exactly right again. His crew came in and did a fabulous job. We get compliments daily on the flooring from our clients. I highly recommend!

Daniel West Masonry & Construction Services has been VERY professional so far. I have tried several flooring installers and I’ve had trouble with each. They even recommended a place to look for our flooring called Floor & Decor. When we went shopping at this retailer, we were extremely impressed with the quality of the wood-look tile and engineered hardwood. You cannot get that type of quality at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Floor & Decor blows them out of the water with the thickness of their flooring. There is literally no bad option there, and they have very low prices that impressed us! I have not yet used them to lay the flooring down yet, but I have so much faith in them that I know they’ll do a wonderful job as they know what they’re talking about, and through other reviews I’ve read they do a wonderful job. This is how much confidence I have in this company. I would highly recommend using them for your next flooring project, and as a bonus they are very affordable!

Had Ryan wire a fan on my screened in porch. Was impressed with work. All finished work done properly. He also layed 130 square foot tile in kitchen, dining area & bathroom. I love my new floor. It looks fantastic. Had to level floor & put in new subfloor first. Worked until job was completed. He can do almost any home improvement. I will definitely have him come back to do any additional work on my home.

I want to upgrade my kitchen and family room, but did not have a plan. Kyle helped me plan my flooring, floor space and lighting to coordinate with my new kitchen cabinets and to fit my lifestyle. After tearing through 2 layers of linoleum and plywood, tearing down a half wall and removing carpet, I ended up with a beautiful wood floor in my kitchen, hallway and family room. The space is so much larger without the half wall. To brighten up my family room, he installed 6 LED lights with a dimmer. I would not have thought of tearing down the half wall, installing new lights or even a new ceiling. I am impressed with all of the work he and his team did. His eye for detail to make my house flow well did not stop there, he suggested the paint colors that I love. I also got a few decorating tips for FREE! I never thought I could afford to have done what I had done. Kyle had a very reasonable price because I had all the work done together, rather than at different times. I am glad that he was suggested to me. I highly recommend him for his quality of work and professionalism.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
