We hired City Pro Services for a landscaping project. Part 1, which included removal of a diseased tree, disposal of our old fencing and yard waste, trimming of trees and planting of 14 Arborvitaes, has been completed and we are very pleased with their work. They're very professional and complete all projects on time and on budget. We are happy to recommend them and will be having them back for more work in the spring.

All American Tradesmen done a bathroom remodel in my home, and did an excellent job. The job was very extensive, yet they completed it with no problem. They were a joy to work with from start to finish. The owner Don Kollmann was a pleasure to work with from the designing, to the finish. He was very helpfull in some of the decisions we had a hard time with. We would recommend them to anyone. We would DEFINITELY use PFC again! Willis Preston was excellent at communicating....responsive and responsible. His guidance and professional advice was great throughout the whole process. He was patient and thorough with me with all my questions for months leading up to the project start date. Of all of the contractors of used throughout the remodeling of our home, he was the best of them. The scope was always clear, the workmanship was top notch...the people that worked on the project were great and trustworthy...and Willis was great at talking through any issues that came up (issues with the home, not issues with him or his work). I cannot stress how great it was to have them install hardwood flooring throughout my first floor. I manage tech/business related projects for a living. His skill and professionalism, fit and finish was top notch!

This contractor has been very upfront with all the work and has informed me the steps of the project and has taken my input with desires and wants. The cost and reasons for the expenses have been totally justified and appreciated. I've had experience with some "jack-legs" and totally appreciate the work this contractor has done and will definitely utilized the services of this company for further work on my home. I highly recommend this contractor.

I have employed Tom's Building Services for more than 5 years. On my personal home, he trim painted, installed h2o heater, bailed out a roofing contractor that didn't properly flash a chimney, tuck pointed, built hand rails on the deck, installed leaf gutter protection. He has also successfully completed electrical, plumbing, soffit repair, pressure washed and painted gables, on our rental properties. Tom is a talented , honest craftsman.

Brad and his staff delivered as promised and we couldn't be more satisfied with their work. Our basement was completely and professionally remodeled and Brad worked with us every step of the way including changes that we wanted to make during the process. They also made it a point to clean up each day and respected our home which is a nice touch if you have had other contractors that didn't do this in the past. I would highly recommend Brad and Alhi to anyone for any construction needs. Easy and professional to work with and there are no surprises.

We hired Jerry to completely a remote home remodel for us. We were in Chicago while Jerry was remodeling our home in Cincinnati- not an easy task, but he did an excellent job. His quote was more reasonable than others', and we also liked the fact that he only takes one job at a time (finishes start to end before taking on a new one.) He retiled our bathrooms, installed new vanities, new tub, and new fixtures, replaced granite countertops with quartz, painted, installed a new backsplash, added railings to our staircase, installed new light fixtures.. just to name a few. We highly recommend him and would hire him for more jobs in a heartbeat.

Witt remodeling really knows their stuff, coming from a background of home renovation. Their designer has a great eye and brought everything together much better than I could have by myself at the hardware store. It really feels cohesive. Their showroom helped me choose components that I valued while avoiding upcharges I didn't need. By removing line items to reduce the scope of my project, we were able to establish a budget that I felt comfortable with. Their work is top notch, creating a bathroom that looks like it's straight out of a new house. They are responsive to all communication channels, email, phone, text, Thumbtack. In short, I felt like my major home repair project was in good hands. They did a great job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
